Ther Can Chan are Color and Drop Thlr Tails at Will. The green lizards which swarm on every tree certainly have the hardest life of any creatures in Barbados, since their flesh is so delicate that every thing eats them which can catch them. Cats, fowls, birds, monkeys and snakes all devour the poor lizards, which have only two." methods of defending themselves, both very inadequate for the purpose. One Is their power of chang ing their color, : whereby they can ap pear bright green at one moment on tho leaf of an aloe and then dark chocolate brown on a piece of damp earth. If this does not conceal them from their enemy they drop their tails. The caudal appendage jumps from the ground and makes a frantic dance all by Itself, and If the pursuer is deluded into seizing It the lizard avails itself of the chance to escape and grow another tall. For the rest the poor lizards are harmless things, with pathetic eyes, in which lurks an expression of weariness and disillusion, as though they were as old as the world Itself and had found It all vanity and vexatldn of spirit. They are fond of plaintive mu sic and will enter at the open windows when a piano is playing and sit listen ing and nodding their queer flat heads and looking out of those wistful eyes at the player till he or she, if of an im aginative temperament, might' fancy she were playing to an audience of transmigrated souls. Chambers' . Jour nal. Cigar Smoke and Lot, In Slam the lighting of a cigar Indicates a. betrothal. SNAKE IN REID MEMORIAL CHURCH.

Music hath charms that much is accepted in good faith by everyone, but when the story is told of how the new set of chimes in the tower of the Reid Memorial Church managed to charm a two-foot black-snake In such a way that It scaled one hundred and fifty feet of smooth stone wall, the hearer asks who has been dreaming. . It Is a fact, though. -,. , -. - , , On Sunday morning,, when people were going to church, a blacksnake, not less than two feet in length, could easily be "discerned lying stretched out on a stone ledge, just above the highest set of windows In the tower. Its head was slightly raised and was swinging back and forth. Layton Myrlck, and Miss Anna Lyons, saw the snake and called the attention of other peorle to it . , Immediately after the morning services, two men made an Investigation. but owing to the fact that a certain key was not at hand, the upper ledge, where the snake was seen, could not be reached and the search was postponed. , .

Hovr Tnls Cheerful Little Cannibal Eat and Develop. A wonderful spirit of tidiness seems to pervade the tadpole world. They always eat whatever has become uselesstheir own eggs, their superfluous companions. Even those who are only weakly are cleared out of the way and the victims take it all as a matter of course. I have disturbed a strong member of the community just as he had begun to dine off the tall of a Weaker brother, but the auffererhaa not troubled to escape he 6imply wait ed till the fratricide returned to com plete his deadly work. For some time there Is no grave change In the tadpoles. They simply grow and become so far transparent tha.t their internal mechanism, which consists of one coll of intestines, is plainly visible. When, however, they are about three .months old a careful observer cri distinguish a tiny foot on either side of the base of the tail These grow slowly, but seem unable to move Independently until shortly before the border land Is passed which leads to perfect froghood. The hind legs have reached their full size before the front ones appear, and, while the feet grow slowly, the hands are ready made and can be used at once. For a day or two they can be seen under the skin before they venture forth, and their possessor Is very restless and excited. He rushes madly about, Jost ling his comrades, and no doubt being voted a bore; then a more vigorous ef fort breaks the skin and the tiny hand and arm appear. There seems some rule about the order of precedence here, as there is when the whiskers go, for last year my tadpoles, almost without exception, had their right hands some hours be fore the left, while on previous occasions I have had an entirely left handed crew. Miller today at the weekly Methodist ministers meeting. It was endorsed. In an address Mr. Miller stated his idea to divide the Methodists of the country in classes. One thousand to give $300, $300,000; one thousand to give $250, $250,000; one thousand to give $200, $200,000, and so on down the scale to small sums. It Is an unwritten law In most Lon don dry goods stores to show no clocks. The proprietors don't want the shoppers to think of the flight of time. A firm of London florists employs a staff of milliners who will trim any hat with natural flowers from $1.25 up, according to the value of the blossoms used. The tallest windmill in England, the famous High mill at Yarmouth, which stood 120 feet from the ground and contained twelve floors, has Just been demolished. Most of the new suits are made with out collars, but with collar effect. The fad of the season is to combine several varieties of laee In the same garment With some of the new girdle arrangements It Is possible to simulate the princess effect upon lingerie frocks. The low necked blouse for evening wear is much in evidence, though the decollete is not very pronounced. SOME GOOD STORIES. Vot For Her Told of Mark Twain. Diplomacy. A story is told of a young wife who knew little of housekeeping. She was : In consequence of that ' inexperience : disposed to stand a bit in awe of the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker, for she felt sure they must be aware of the extent of her Ignorance In household matters. She ordered only such things as she was absolutely sure of, and she made her Interviews with the tradesmen as brief as possible. One morning there came to her house a collector of ashes. "Ash-ees, ash-ees!" she heard him calling in stentorian tones. As the cry was repeated again and again she became more and more perplexed as to what "ash-ees" meant Finally she went to the gate In the rear and opened it. "Ash-ees? came in guttural question from the man. The young wife hesitated for a moment; then, drawing herself up to a dignified attitude, 6he replied coldly, "No, I don't think I care for any today." At a recent dinner Mark Twain, according to an English report, made a most amusing little speech which was responded to as follows by a lawyer who was present: "Doesn't it strike the company as a little unusual," he Inquired, "that a professional humorist should be funny?" When the laugh that greeted this sally had subsided Mark Twain drawled out. "Doesn't It strike the company as a little unusual that a lawyer should have his hands In his own pockets?" A young and smart looking Scotch clergyman was to preach a "trial" sermon In a strange church. Fearing that his hair might be disarranged or that he might have a smudge on his face, he said to the sexton, there being no mirror in the vestry, "James, could you get me a glass?" James disappeared and after a few minutes returned with something under his coat, which, to the consternation of the divine, he produced in the form of a bottle, saying, "Ye mauna let on aboot It, meenister, for I got it as a special favor, and I wadna hae got it at all if I had na told them It was for you." Harper's Weekly. A Protective Precaution. "Don't you know," defiantly asked the socialistic orator, "that the people are now crying out for Justice to keep her eye on the lawbreakers in high places?" "I don't care for that," returned the millionaire rebater, "as long as her bandage doesn't slip off." Baltimore American. Ownership.
