ADMIRAL KUZMiCH IS ASSASSINATEO
Commander of St. Petersburg I?. Laid Low by a Workman's Dagger. WAS PLANNED IN ADVANCE ASSASSIN ESCAPED INTO THE CROWD AND POLICE WERE UNABLE TO FIND HIM THE RUSSIAN MAY DAY. St. Petersburg, May 15. Vice-Admiral Kuzmich, commander of the port", who was very unpopular with the workmen, was assassinated here yesterday by workmen whose May day demonstration he had attempted to stop. The admiral was killed at the new admirality works, a government institution where most of the 2,000 men employed there reported for duty at 5 o'clock in the moraine;. They wanted immediately to march out in a body and celebrate the Russian May day, but finally agreed to work till 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The admiral, however, made a speech to the men, saying that he could not agree to their leaving work, at 2 o'clock, and the matter was left open. At about 9:30 a. m., according to an officer who was at the gate of the works, the admiral was emerging from a small shop in the works when a workman who had been concealed around the corner of the building leaped on Kuzmich from behind and drove a long dagger into his back. The admiral fell forward on his face, which was badly cut by stones and died immediately. Troop'a 8urround Works. The assassin-fled into a large forge where he waB lost, among the men employed there. The works were promptly ' surrounded by troops and police, but the search for the murdererwas unavailing, his comrades professing ignorance of his identity. The police say it is evident that the assassination of the admiral had been planned , in advance. The dagger which was found on the spot, was con cealed in a round stick, like the Bord cane. Among the workmen are many fdrmer Bailors and revolutionists. Kuzmich had a bad reputation among the workmen, being regarded as hard and desnbtic. Admiral Kuzmich. participated in the Russo-Turklsh war and in 1902 was second flag officer of the Port Arthur fleet. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1903 and was appointed commander of the port. Politically he was a reactionist. Mantell's Marionette Hippodrome AT THE THEATERS Earthquake Fictures st Phillips. Motion pictures of the greatest cat astrophe of modern times the destruc tion by earthquake azrd Ore of Can Francisco are to be exhibited ai the New Phillips Friday afternoon and night. Thesa realistic and awe-ln-spiring views, centiite portrayals o" the terrible dwastsr which overtook the beautiful California city, wsro taken immediately after tha earthquake and during the progress oZ the three days" holocaust. The motion picture company., which is exhibiting the views throughout the country was fortunate In noU having its plant destroyed by the earthquake,' and New Phillips patrons are to be congratulated on tholr opportunity to witness, vividly reproduced in moving pictures the stirring scenes vhich marked the death dealing calamity that wiped so much ;of the coast city from the face of the;earth almost in the twinkling of an eye. Galvani at the.Gennett. Prof. Galvani, the hypnotist and mind reader who will be at .the Gennett this evening arrived1 in this city yesterday from Huntington, W. Va., where he had just closed a very successful five-night engagement. Last evening at 8 o'clock he hypnotized a man in tho display window at the Starr Piano Store, to sleep 24 hours. This afternoon at 1:30 a committee of prominent citizens will procure several articles and take a carriage and drlvo about the city and hide them. Galvani will remain in the window whare his subject is sleeping arta immediately upon their return he 'will permit' himself to be blind folded, and will get into the carriage, drive and find the articles, and return them to their respective places. The fact that the committee will not permit him to know what they secreted or where they placed them, makes the test extremely remarkable. Vaudeville at the Gennett. All the predictions in regard to the merits of the vaudeville bill at the Gennett this week, have been verified, and patrons of that house will find that much enjoyable entertainment has been provided for them. ,One of the especialy enjoyable features is the motion picture film, showing 'Rip's Dream," which is certainly a re markable creation along this line. The picture is shown in ten sections. Collins and Labelle, dancers and con tortionists, have a good turn, one part of which consists of dancing by Collins upsidedown, while the same steps are executed by Miss LaBello on a stand that is eleveated eight feet. Jennings and Jewel, German comedians; Beauchamp, comedy acrobat and barrel jumper; Helen Ogden, vocalist; the Waltcna in a Chinese act that is a real novelty and Ernest Renk in two illustrated songs, do , their full share toward the entortainiient. There are soma portions of the blll'that alone are well worth tho price of admission. Vaudeville at the Phillips. Nearly two hours of entertainment is provided in the bill that is being pot on at the Now Phillips this week and there is no time in which the In terest of the audience laga. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carter have a comedy musical that is much out of the ordinary. Carter is no mean comedian and -his antics keep the house laughing. The Mantell Marionettes, a hippodrome and European novelty, is a very clever performance and was heartily received by the audience. Sanders, Dean and Sanders, have a laugh-pro ducer in their comedy playlet, "A Broken -Home," and'May Nielson sings COLLINS- AND LA BEXLC AT
at the New Phillips This Week.
BEHIFIT A SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR Conterville's new Pdusical Organization Appraciated by the Pecplo of the Town Entertainment AtiSinaSsd by a Lsrge Crowd Saturday NihL PallarUu'ii Special. Centerville, May 14. The entertainment given Saturday evening at tho town hall for the benefit of the Centerville' brass band was a success. Not only did the people of tho town prove their good will and aporeclation of the band, but tho surrounding country was represented as well. The very liberal donations to tho supper enabled the management to provide a banquet that was supurb in quality and almost endless in quantity. Tho long tables were tastefully arranged. Tho ladies in charge spared no pains to serve tha guests with the utmost order and executive ability. The supper began at live o'clock and continued several hours. The suppiles remaining were then offered for sale at auction. A crowded house greeted the musical and literary entertainment given in the auditorium at half past eight o'clock. The band occupied the stage which was tastefully decorated with flags and bunting. The program began with music by the band. Following was a humorous recetation by Miss Nellie Jones. A quartette composed of Messrs Charles Smith, Clyde Lundy, Earl Lundy and Bowers, gave several selections at Intervals. Mrs. James W. Home and Miss Geneve Home favored the audience with a piano duet. Miss Bessie M. Buhl recited with much spirit "Noah Bixler's Snow Man," by Riley. Miss Buhl is very successful as an impersonator of child hood. The band gave selections at intervals during the evening and received warm applause. The perfection attained during the short period of organization reflecte8 much credit on each member of the band and on the leader, Mr. Charles Darnell. FUND OF NEARLY $5,000 Ancient Order of Hibernians 13 Sending Much Money to Treasurer O'Brien for Frisco. According to M. J. O'Brien. National Treasurer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, large amounts are being received daily from over the country to be used in swelling the fund for the relief of the sufferers at San Francisco. Nearly $5,000 has now been collected and it is possible that this amount will be doubled. Shortly after the catastrophe which destroyed the great California cities, a call was ifsaed by the National Chairman, asking that contributions be sent to the National treasurer. pleasingly. Miss Leona Thomesoa is increasing in popularity as siflgar c the illustrated songs, while the motion pictures this week are unusually interesting. No doubt the New Phillips wiil continue to have the liberal patronage accorded it last week. Palladium Want Ads Pay. THE GENNETT THIS WEEK.
