110 MARKETS THE COLD SNAP HAS BEEN A SET BACK TO HOME GROWN STUFF, ESPECIALLY BERRIES. K The present winter like weather has been a great setback for home grown produce, and the local retailers state that it will probably mean that the bulk of .the home grown stuff will not put in an appearance for a week or more later than scheduled. The prospects for a record breaking strawberry crop has been spoiled by the recent frosts, and while there will be home grown strawberries on the market In due season the berries will not be up to the standard that was expected of them. Raspberries and blackberries were also affected by the frost. Kale of various kinds is plentiful on the local market and the quality is excellent. Despite the weather local dealers have done a good business so far this week. COUNTRY PRODUCE. (Paid by the Bee Hive Grocery.) Butter. Creamery 23c to 27c Country . . c 20c Eggs. HOG MARKET STEADY ON BUYING BY THE PACKERS CATTLE PRICES UNCHANGED. t Publishers' Press Indianapolis, May 9. Receipts, 4,500 hogs, 1,300 cattle and 100 sheep, against 6,404 hogs, 947 cattle and 40 sheep one week ago, and 4,356 hogs, 687 cattle and 64 sheep one year ago. The hog market closed barely steady. The top price paid was $6.47. and there were only two loads good enough to bring that. Receipts were only fair for the middle of the week. There was little or no competition, and big packers had the market to themselves. They took a few choice pigs and lightweight hogs at unchanged prices. The bulk of the sales ranged from $6.406.45. Cattle Closed Steady. The cattle market closed with prices steady except female butcher stock, which was slightly higher. This strength was due to quality of the offerings. Steers made a good sale, the best bringing $5.60. Good steers also sold for $5.40. The demand for this grade of stock was active and many sales were reported. Good cows also were in strong demand. Bulls were in fair demand at steady prices. Veal calves sold strong. The bulk of the sales were from $6.50 6.75. There was a good demand. No Change in Sheep. The 6heep - market presented no change in prices. Receipts were only fanr. Outside inquiry was small and the bulk of the offerings was taken by local butchers and packers. Cattle. CATTLE PRICES STRENGTHENED ON LIGHT RUN HOG PRICES EASIER ON LIBERAL RUN. Publishers' Press CncinnatI, May 9.Recelpts: Cattle, 788; hogs, 3.687; sheep, 348. Cattle The run of cattle today was a relatively light one for the third business day of the week, and, as the demand was good from all sources, the effects of the decreased offerings was strengthening: All grades seemed to meet with ready competition, and it wasn't long before the yards were cleared. Prices in most cases were a dime higher than on Monday, and the market wound up strong at the advance, and more cattle, especially handy, light fat grades, were wanted. Stocker and feeding cattle ruled firm under active request and very scant supply. Milch cows steady and in good demand. Bulls Receipts were light and prices steady. Calves Market opened steady, but turned weaker, and the general averof sales was from 25c to 50c lower. Hogs Under a more libral run the market for hogs turned easier and opened with all grades selling from 2c to 5c lower. Packing and butcher lots sold mainly at $6.50 6.55, as against $6.55 6.57 H for equal quality yesterday. At the decline .however, the movement was brisk, and the yards were cleared at an early hour. PROFIT TAKING APPEARED WHEN STOCKS ADVANCEDMARKET CONFUSED. Publishers Press New York, May 9. The movement in prices at the opening of the stock market was confuced, realizing of profits making inroads at some points while at others fresh strength was shown. Although a few stocks were advanced successfully after the opening, selling orders increased gradually and there was a more general disposition to take profits on yesterday's rise, which resulted in driving the favorite stocks well below yesterday's closing. Gains that were established in the first few minutes of business were much reduced or completely wiped out later. Plenty of Stocks for Sale. Support was effective for a time in holding prices, but stocks came out in volume again and made a lower average than before. Bonds were steady. Spirited buying of the principal metal stocks gradually diffused a strong tone throughout the general market and there was a substantial rally which brought the average of prices up to yesterday's Pacific and Amalgamated Copper were among the prominent stocks that sold a fraction above last night's closing, and the loss in Reading was reduced to half a point.
