HOME GROWN CUCUMBERS ARE NOW IN THE M AH KET SOUTHERN TRADE ON A DECLINE. This is a time of change In the vegetable and fruit markets, the Southern supply dying out and local supply coming in. Within two more weeks the shipments of Southern stuff to Indiana will be confined to strawberries peas, tomatoes and a few other things that are not at their best In Indiana until about the first of June. Southern States have reached the top of their spring shipping to this market Mississippi is leading at present, with Tennessee pulling closer every day. Alabama shipments will end next week. Flordla has been shipping longer than any other State and will continue to ship for some time yet. California a large shipper to Indiana during the winter, is practically out of local business, and will not be heard of for some time. Home-grown cucumbers are in and when cucumbers come it Is a sure sign that other things are about due. Spring spinach and spring kale, along with the second crop of radishes, are due from local gardners next week. The second crop of radishes should be better than the first in every way, and, until the new radishes arrive, there will not be mveh business along that line. Alabama peas, now sold, will give way to Tennessee peas next week. Twenty days from now home-grown peas will be ' in the Richmond market. COUNTRY PRODUCE. . (Paid by the Bee Hive Grocery.) Butter. REVIEW OF THE WEEK SHOWS INCREASED DEMAND FOR LIVE STOCK. Publishers' Press Cincinnati, May C. A review of last week shows that there was a free and considerable larger movement in the marketing of cattle than the recent condition of values justified, and the receipts run close to 4,800 head, against 3,923 head last week, 3,850 head two weeks ago and 3,744 head a year ago the same week. Bulls Light receipts advanced prices from the start, and the week closed Saturday on a strong market. Calves Liberal receipts the first of the week broke prices down and at the low time Thursday all grades sold from 10 15c lower. Receipts Saturday were very small and market active under good demand. All grades sold strong. Hogs The movement in hogs continued just fair, and the number marketed during the week amounted to 13,500 head against 13.S68 head last week, 17,940 head two weeks ago and 14,546 head one year ago the same week. Receipts Saturday were light and the market generally was steady in comparison with the past three or four days, as follows: Sheep and Lambs Due to the recent advance in prices, the movement in sheep and lambs increased sharply, and the receipts during the past week amounted to nearly 2,200 head Saturday. Notwithstanding the enlarged supply prices Saturday maintained a steady, to firm tone. Clipped lambs sold 23c higher from the start. CATTLE. HENRY CLEWS TELLS OF THE FEVERISH CONDITION OF MONEY MARKET AND ITS CAUSE. Publishers Press! New York, May 6. Henry Clews in his Weekly Trade Review says: A fresh wave of liquidation of almost cyclonic proportions struch Wall Street this week. Conditions were more or less unsett?d by the San Francisco disaster, and the opportunity was seized to enforce some rather drastic liquidations, which tell chiefly upon a few prominent and rather too optimistic operators. This last decline in the market resulted in a drop cf from 10 to 50 points in many of the active shares, inflicting severe loss3ss in quarters which were fortunately able to stand them. In spite of this rather unusual break there are n orumors of serious trouble at this writing, and the financial atmosphere appears to have been much cleared now that the storm has spent its worst force. As has been repeatedly intimated in these advices, it was the monetary situation which furnished the instrument of power for the bears. Had it not been for the large demands of San Francisco upon an ; eady overtaxed money market no such enforced decline would have been possible. Fortunately, we were able to secure material assistance from abroad and thus mitigate the force of the blow. Some $30,000,000 of money has been remitted to San Francisco and over forty millious of gold has been ordered from Europe, being made immediately available through Secretary Shaw's leniency in depositing Treasury gold n return for bonds as collateral. Much cf the money sent to San Francisco to strengthen local banks and prevent panic will soon return into the customary channels of circulation, so no further cerious difficulty need be apprehended from Pacific Coast monetary demands, although this catastrophe will be a factor for some time to come. The Standard Oil investigation was another shock, and the proof of railroad collusion is likely to stimulate the demand for Goverment -railroad regulation. It is quite safe to assert that the condition of the market has been vastly improved by recent readjustment, and that many securities are now selling at a level offering reasonable inducements to careful investors. Purchases on the margin, however, will have to be conducted conservatively. The market is still exposed to shocks and will not soon' fully recover from recent blows. Besides, the monetary outlook, while improved, is not entirely free from danger and the future of business pcnorally depends largely upon our having another good harvest. With the improved technical position of the market and the concentration of stocks in more numerous and stronger hands sharp rallies are likely to come at any time unless accident interferes. It should be remembered that losses have fallen not upon the public but upon rich holders, whose activity may have been crippled but who apparently have not been totally incapacitated. An active and fluctuating market seems likely for some time to come. Stock Market. IPublishers' Press New York, May. 6. The opening dealings on Saturday in stocks offered an active and irregular market. The extent of Friday's advances attracted realizing at some points, while at others the rise was extended. Anaconda rose 2, Northern Pacific and General Electric 1, Reading, Smelting, Locomotive, Hocking Valley preferred a point and Union Pacific and United States Steel preferred . A general decline in prices ceased when the enormous buying of Reading began which carried it up 3 to 124. Other coalers participated In the rise, which was due to expectations of favorable developments at the miners' convention. All the heavy losses were made up and in many cases there was a good advance besides. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
