The average price of heavies was $6.40. Bulk of the sales was from $6.35 to $6.40. Cattle Strong and Active. The cattle market closed unchanged. The market was strong and active. MARKET UNAFFECTED BY ROOSE VEVLT'S MESSAGE IS PUSHED UPWARD SHORTS COVER. Publishers Press! New York, May 4. The higher range of prices in London had some effect on international stocks in the opening dealings in the stock market here, but the early movement was much confused and irregular. Canadian Pacific rose 14 and Union Pacific and Reading , but the latter immediately lost its gain. Anaconda broke 5 and the opening in Amalgamated Copper was of 8,600 shares at 96 to 9G compared with 97 last night. Aside from some feverish fluctuations prices went sharply upward when it was perceived that the inside support and commission houses were taking all offerings. Stock that had been sharply depressed at the outset scored large gains, notably Amalgamated Copper, Anaconda and Smelting. Representative railroads were bought heavily, especially Union Pacific and Reading. About the only tlement of uncertainty lay in the frequent efforts of the bears to turn the market downward by. concentrating their selling on a few stocks, but in the first hour these attacks were successfully resisted. Made- a Further Rise. Prices made a further rise, the spec ulative favorites leading. Northern Pacific and Great Northern preferred rose 5 to 514. Bonds were irregular. The advance after midday compelled the shorts to cover heavily. Gains of 14 and 2 points were general. Toward 1 o'clock there was a setback, running to a point in Reading St. Paul, Smelting and others. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
