BUYERS OF EGGS MAKE EXTRA PROFIT BY SORTING OUT THE LARGEST AND THE WHITEST. One of the largest buyers of eggs for the eastern market in this part of the state keeps a large number of girls sorting eggs, separating the white eggs from the brown, the clean from the soiled and also according to their sizes. lie gets his money back with a profit by charging a fancy price for the white eggs or large size. Some of the local grocers in this part of the state are offering prizes for the heaviest eggs. One of the prominent egg and poultry deaers in Eastern Indiana says that there Is little doubt that the farmers will be forced by conditions to pay more attention to a breed of poultry that produce larger eggs instead of more eggs. He says that they are breeding Leghorns freely because they lay many eggs, but that they are so small that they must necessarily sell for less money per dozen. One of two things must be done, he thinks, get larger eggs or sell them by weight. COUNTRY PRODUCE. (Paid by the Bee Hive Grocery.) Butter., Creamery, 23c to 27c Country . to 20c Eggs. HOG PRICES FIVE CENTS LOWER ON RECEIPTS OF 5,500 CATTLE LOWER. Indianapolis, May 1. Receipts, 5,500 hogs, 1,300 cattle and 250 sheep, against 4,162 hogs, 942 cattle and 170 sheep a week ago and 4,540 hogs, 950 cattle and 202 sheep one year ago. The close of the hog market found prices 5 cents lower. Receipts were fairly liberal for the day and trading was active in the early market. Both packers and shippers were strong competitors in the early trading. Packers succeeded in taking about three-fourths of the supply, leaving the market to the shippers, who then filled all their orders. The early market was steady on good heavy hogs, while the lighter kinds were at least 5 cents lower. There were only a few good heavy hogs able to bring $6.60 The majority o fthls class Bold for $6.55 to 6.57i, with many sales at the former figure. The close was weak, with nearly all sold. Cattle Ten to Fifteen Cents Lower. The cattle market closed 1015c lower. It was a vexatious market to the selling side. Trade was slow in getting started, owing to the bearish tendency of the buying side; Owners of cattle were strongly inclined to hold out for prices steady with yesterday, but finally gave in to the buyers, and a fair movement of cattle was started. Light butcher grades of cows and heifers were sold frequently In the early market, but at a loss compared with prices obtained for like kinds yesterday. There was barely any demand for the heavier kinds. Steers were a slow sale. Bulls sold steady. Calves opened steady, but with increased receipts the bidding began slipping down, and at the close prices were fully $1 off from like kinds of yesterday. The majority . of the sales of calves was from 50c to $1 lower. Sheep Active and Higher. There was a good increase in receipts of sheep and lambs and trading was active. Prices closed strong to 10c higher on lambs and sheep of quality. Local butehers and packers took the greater number of the receipts. About 250 Horses. The weekly horse auction found about 250 head on sale. Prices held steady, compared with last week. The usual run of chunks, Southerners and draft horses was offered. Cattle. HOG MARKET STRONG WITH UPWARD TENDENCY ON SMALL RECEIPTS. v Publishers' Press Cincinnati, May 1. Receipts Cattle, 154; hogs, 1226; sheep, 393. Cattle Trade in the cattle market today was very fair, a general steady to strong tone prevailed and the fresh arrivals, which were small, along with the few stale cattle carried over from yesterday, that together made up less than 300 head were taken long before the clqsing time of the day's operations. One lot of choice light steers, weighing 610 lbs, brought $4.90, but nothing in heavy steers of.fered good enough to test the market on In that line. Stockers and feeders strong and the demand is good. Bulls Small receipts and a good demand. Bologna grades sold 1025c higher, and fat bulls strong. Calves Market quiet and about stocdy at yesterday's late lecline. Hogs The receipts of hogs were quite small, and, due to that fact, the market developed a stronger and upward tendency, and opened with packing and butcher grades selling generally 5c higher from $6.60 to $6.65 against $6.55 to $6.60 for equal quality yesterday. Light shipping hogs also showed a similar advance, but the demand was only fair, and the trade closed easy on that kind. Pigs strong. Sheep and Lambs Market active. LARGE SELLING ORDERS MET STOCK ADVANCES FORCING THEM TO THE LOWEST. Publishers' Press New York, May 1. The advance in prices of stocks in progress yesterday was continued in the opening dealings in the stock market. Changes in the majority of active speculative leaders were narrow, but in some of the specialties there were wide rebound3. Stocks had a moderate setback after the opening and then fluctuated uncertainly.. Reading and Brooklyn Transit were bought heavily and showed considerable strength, but the rise in the other leaders was slight Demand Fell Off. The demand became insignificant at the higher level and prices sagged. Colorado Fuel fell 2 below last night, Smelting 2, St. Paul and Northwestern 2, and United States Steel, and Kansas & Texas 1 to 1. There were advances in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie of 1, and Denver & Rio Grande preferred, 1 to 1. Bonds were heavy. Large selling orders were distributed throughout the market and the trad ing was very animated, with the bulk of pressure centering on the Western stocks, Reading and Consolidated Gas. Practically all stocks declined a point or more, and the losses ran well bsyond that in the leaders. A slight rally occurred in the middle of the afternoon, but it did not last long, traders putting out new lines of stock at the higher level and forcing prices to the lowest.
