THESE ARE BUSY DAYS FOR THE FARMERS RAIN HAS BEEN A DISCOURAGING FEATURE. Farmers arc busy again with their ploughing and uprinff work. The rains of the past few days were a little discouraging, but it looks better now. However, they have all the fencing, hauling and ditching they can do until the ground is dry enough to work. Many of the farmers are considerably behind and could not be Induced to leave their work for any ordinary cause. It Is undoubtful if the acreage of oats will be nearly as large thli seaBon as usual, for the season is now so late that many of the farmers who usually sow large crops of oats will scarcely have time to get their ground ready for tho corn crop by planting time, which will be in a few weeks. LAST WEEK SHOWED ADVANCE IF 25 CENT3 IN HOG PRICES CATTLE MARKET DULL. Publishers' Press Indianapolis, April 15. Receipts 2,500 hogs and 150 cattle Saturday against 1,813 hog3 and 121 cattle the week before and 1,938 hogs and 121 cattle a year ago. There was a smail run of hogs and a good demand both from local and outside soure?8, which made a further advance in prices. The average market was 10c above- yesterday, and sales of good mixed hogs were around 15c higher. The market closed steady at the advance. Sales ranged from $6.50(g6.75 and the bulk of the supply sold at $6.60(36.75. The top price today was the highest since May 12, 1903. Receipts of hogs last week were average, compared with recent years at tnis time. Conditions generally favored the selling side and there was a good permanent advance In prices. In the first two days of the week there was a gain of 5f?10c and on Wednesday a decline of5c. The last half of the week there was an advance every day, with the principal gain at the close of the week. The close was 20 25c higher than the close of last week. Cattle Market Dull. There was a small run of cattle Saturday and not enough fresh arrivals to establish new prices. Some local packers were not In the market and there was no Inquiry from outside sources. Trading was quiet, but sales were at about steady prices. Sales included fat steers at $4.404.90 and stockers and feeders at $4.004.75. Heifers sold from $3.50 to $4.50, cows from ?3.00 to $4.35 and calves from $4.00 to $6.75. From the sellers' standpoint the cattle market last week was probably the most unsatisfactory this season. Receipts were larger than necessary and there was a gradual shrinkage in values. Good cows, all kinds of heifers and light butcher steers suffered the most and common to medium cows and best steers the least. The average at the close of the week was 25c lower than last week, the best cows and heifers being frequently 50c lower. Sheep Receipts Larger. Receipts last week were larger than they have been recently, but practically all of the supply arrived in a single day, and the greater part of the week there were not enough sheep and lambs. on sale to establish prices. Generally steady prices, compared with the close of last week, were realized. The highest sales this week were $12.00 for spring lambs, $6.40 for wool lambs, $5.50 for clipped lambs, $4.75 for yearlings and $4.25 for clipped sheep. There were no fresh arrivals Saturday. WHEAT PRICES WERE OFF SATURDA V DUE TO THE GOOD CROP REPORTS FROM SOUTHWEST. Publishers' Press Chicago. April 15. The wheat market opened firm and trading was active on Saturday. The chief causes of the strength were wet weather, a prediction of decreased world's, movement for Monday and smaller shipments from Australia and India. May wheat opened Hc to c higher, sold at 80c and rallied to SOTc. A sharp slump in prices occurred in the last half hour on profit-taking, induced by reports that the crops of Texas and Oklahoma had shown a per centage cf 100. The top point for May was 79$479c, and the close was weak, with May down c at 79 "s 80c. Corn Strong at First. The corn market opened strong. Shorts were active bidders chiefly on account of wet weather in the conv belt. May corn opened ac to c higher, sold at 46c and then advanced to 46c. The break in wheat and predictions of ether weather caused a decline in prices. Hhe May option falling to 46 The close was weak with May off c at 46c. Oats were weak, partly in sympathy with corn and partly because of the rain. May oats opened unchanged to c higher, sold at 3232V2c. NEW YORK MARKETS'
HENRY CLEWS REVIEWS THE ! SITUATION OF THE WORLD' MONEY MARKET AS IT APPLIES TO AMERICA. Palladium Special. J New York, April 15. Henry Clews in his financial review issued today says : "On Wednesday the announcement was made that over $6,000,000 of gold had been engaged in London for this market, the result being an immediate drop in money rates and a corresponding improvement in security values. This development Is connected with the fact that funds will soon be returned from the interior more freely I imparted a more confident feeling reI irardina' n-.nnetnrv nrosnerits. The lat ter outlook, however, is still one requiring close attention. In spite of the .arge increase in our currency supply we have been turning floating capital into fixed forms too rapidly. "The nations savings are being too quickly exhausted. Large sums are locked up in speculation, particularly in real estate; and legitimate demands continue very heavy owing to the immense volume of business and the high prices of commodities. Of course, only a small portion of the
3D
business of the country Is done, through an actual transfer of money probably not more than 10 per cent the balance of the nation's transactions being effected through a mere transfer of credits checks. Nevertheless, our curreJ&r supplies have been pretty thoroughly exhausted, and bank reserves are at a remarkable low ebb. "There are three ways of replenishing the latter. First, by the return movement from the interior; second, I by gold imports, and third, by liqui dation. The latter is the most unwelcome and yet the inevitable if the other two sources fail. Unfortunately recent stringency arising from perfectly natural causes was aggravated by the inelasticity of our currency system; so efforts again appear to be under way directing the attention of Congress . to the careless neglect which this problem has received for many years past. In all probability we shall get no serious reform until the nation comes face to face with a serious financial crisis. Our neighbor Canada, which in many respects is working under similar conditions as ourselves, makes no complaint of monetary stringency, for Canada possesses a model banking system and an elastic currency; consequently her business men go on their prosperous way unfetered by monetary consideration, while we blunder along refusing to learn except by bitter experience. Apparently the present crisis in the money market has been passed, and easier conditions may now be anticipated until the demands of the next harvest begin to make themselves felt." , New York Stocks. PubliRhers' Press New York, April 15. Narrow changes from Friday night's prices were the result of the small opening dealings in the stock market on Saturday. The majority were slightly higher, but Union Pacific, Reading and Baltimore & Ohio showed small fractional declines, Pacific Coast second preferred rose 1, Anaconda 1 and American Ice . Fractionally better prices were obtained for the favorites and there was a keen demand for Amalgamated Copper and United States Steel. Among the railroads the movement was of less consequence, but Reading and Union Pacific were moderately active, Anaconda jumped 5, Northwestern ZVz, New York, Chicago & St. Louis second preferred 1, Amalgamated Copper, American Car preferred, Central Leather and American Ice 1. Consolidated1 Gas lacked support and was forced down 1V2. Caused Prices to Advance. The announcement of another engagement of $5,000,000 gold for import, and the improved banking conditions shown by the weekly statement, caused prices to advance. Industrials and specialties were most conspicuous. United States Reduction preferred rose 4, American Beet Sugar preferred 2, North American 24. General Electric. United States Reduction and Pressed Steel Car 2, and American Smelting, American Car, Republic Steel, the National Lead stocks, Pittsburg Coal, International Paper preferred and Distillers' Securities 1 to 1.
