CapL Meredith was first appointed at the head of .the bureau in 1SS9 by President Harrison. He was displaced whenCleveland became president, and was re-instated under McKlnley. He served as director of the bureau about nine and a half years. He said at Washington yesterday that hie plans.. for , the future are not 'decided, but he. expects to spend the remainder of his days in Washington. . The change, in the directorship is due to a desire of the Treasury officials to place a younger man in charge.
