Buying by Shorts and Commission Houses Caused Firmness in Wheat Market In Face of Favorrale Weather and Increased Northwestern Receipts. Chicago, March 2C The wheat market opened firm here on b.tyins by shorts and comciisson houses. The firmness of tho market was dv.u to, the fact that prices at Liverpool were c higher in the face of the decjine here on Saturday. Tne favorable weather In the wheat belt and increased receipts In the Northwest were beari&h Influences, but the baying was heavy enough to offset this. May wheat opened y(n c higher, declined to 784t7Sc, and rallied to 78?4c Corn Opened Firm. The corn market was firm because of buying induced by the reports of wet weather, which. It is bepeved. will retard the movement of the crop. May corn opened unchanged to '&c higher, and held at the hither figure. Notwithstanding larger local receipts, the market, in oats onened steady in sympathy with wheat and corn, but eased offlater. Provisions were weak, because of a decline in the price of live hogs.

THE SENSE OF SMELL.

6m, According to a Scientist, la Itt Fundamental Baaia. Is the 6ense of smell excited by gase? or particles? According to Dr. Johu Aitken, an English specialist, gas 13 the fundamental basis of the sense of smell. In experiments be iirst investigated musk, of which it Is possible to detect by smell a microscopic quantity inconceivably minute, a fact well known, to scientists. Dr. Aitken cartied out his researches upon the cloudy condensation basis, according to wl '.cJr. if odors are attributable to particles, the latter form nuclei of cloudy condensation in supersaturated air and thus r.inke their presence visible. In the case of musk no such nuclei were detected, proving that musk does not give off solid particles, but evaporates as a gis or vnpor, and that it Is gaseous particles from the musk thai act on the sense of smell. Of twentythree other odorous substances not one gave Its perfume in solid particles, nothing but gases or vapore escaping from them. Dr. Aitken points out that the nostrils appear to substantiate this theory. The perf ume of snuff, for instance, is a soft, velvety sensation, while the effect of the solid Is sharp nud biting, inoro allied to pain than pleasure.

HAND MYSTERIES.

Man's ''Lesser Side" AVorka to Keep the "Stronger Side" Free. A group of men, which included a salesman for a Chicago cigir house, stood talking near the news stuud in a hotel when, the subject of cigars came up. "Say, Strlblen," said one of the men, '."you're a cigar salesman. Tell mo w by It is that all smokers hold their cigars to tho left side of the mouth." "They don't." rep;iod Striblen "that Is, all don't. It 13 only the right handed men who do. Left handed men hold their cigars In the right side of the mouth. The reason, I have been told. Is this: It is natural with all men to make their 'lesser side' do what work It can to keep their 'stronger side' free that it may meet emergencies. If a man has a package to carry he holds it In his left hand If he is right handed; if he is left handed he holds it in his right hand. In either case the hand he- has the most confidence in i3 free for emergency use. This same idea he stretches to cover the muscles of hU lips. It Isn't the possibility that he may need the muscles on the right side for emergearyise that makes the right handeyVTnan hold his cigar in the left sidof bis mouth it's Inst that idea

his whole 'lesser side that makes

him do it." Denver Tost

The Result. "Women are naturally more artistic than men." "Yes," answered the matter of fact person; "that! why bo many of us look funny when we wear our Christmas neckties and smoking Jackets. Our wives want us to look artisticWashington Star.

GENERAL LIST ADVANCES ON A RISING MARKET VANDERBILT STOCKS STRONG.

Stocks Distinguished by Breadth and Variety cf Their Fluctuations Were Bought Freely Railroad Stocks Less Active Than Specilaties Prices Held on Advances. Bids Raised to Supply the Demand Better C ose. New York, March 26. A few specialties showed wide movement in the prices for the week in the stock marbut the general list was sluggish and irregular. Reading was the only active stock in the list. Stocks that have been distinguished by the breadth ar.d variety of their fluctuations were bought freely this morning. Railroad stocks derived little benefit from the show of strength in numerous specialties. Advancing Tendency. Demand was very light, but prices were held and advanced at some points. The available floating supply of selected stocks was cleaned up when the demand became larger and bids had to be raised materia Jly before orders could be filled. This was especially noticeable in the junior Vanderbilts and other stocks of similar inactivity. At the close the general list showed an appreciable advance over opening prices.
