Possible That Burke and Donovan May Admit Doing the Hagers- . . . . .' . ' : 1 ; v . , town Job.. The belief of Sheriff Smith, and other Richmond and Wayne county officers that 11 Fingers" Burke and James Donovan, the men convicted at Winchester for the robbery of the Ilidgeville bank, are two of the gang that had a hand in the Ilagerstown bank looting, appears to be well founded. "The same opinion is shared by ' "Buck" Fletcher, of Winchester, the, detective who finally ran down the meu in Ohio and caused their arrest. It has ben pretty well established as a result of the trials of Donovan and Burke that the original safe-blowing gang was broken up following the j Ilagerstown bank robbery, the gang dividing, several members going south into Kentucky and others proceeding eastward. Just now, while the men are still in jail at Winchester awaiting their transfer to prison, an effort is being made to have them-confess to other safe cracking jobs that have been committed in Eastern Indiana and Western Ohio, and if they finally do this, the true story of the Hagerstown job may be known. Col. John W. Newton, of Portland, pf the attorneys for the two men gave notice that he would immediately ask for a new trial. ' Every precaution is being taken at the county jail to prevent any posible chance of escape being tfferd the two men. ' One singulr fact has developed concerning the bottle of liquid found upon Donovan fs person, together with , the dynamite . fuses and fulminating caps when arrested in Lima. The liquid waas Tegarded as nitroglycerin and when the other effects were expressed tothe officials here in a box the bottle was carefully omit4 ted and it waa brought over later by an officer. . It has since developed, however, that the "nitroglycerin' in the bottle is really oil jf mustard. The state 's attorneys claimed that this drug is usd by lawbreakers on their ahoea to spoil the .scent, of bloodhound, but the introduction of tha . bottle as -. evidence was not permitted by the eourt.
