Manager Swisher has also ' booked Eva (Tanguay, Kelcey & Shannon, " Robin Hood" and "The Pink Hussars," the dates having not yet been announced. ' i ! . M .If Manager Murray has arranged for ci one of the strongest vaudeville bills this week that has yet appeared at the popular vaudeville house, the New Phillips, and the usual large crowds will attend. He has another top notch bill scheduled for next week. m ' There is an idea of the ridiculous associated in the minds of most, people with the negro that makes stage impression of negro humor enjoyable to all persons in all sections. The negro is seldom taken-seriously.-His attitude is always that of a comedian, his native makeup even' savors" "of the grotesque. .Always endowed with a keen sense of humor himself, he is enabled to play upon those elements that go to make a good clown There are no unhappy negroes. Greater Minstrels for the past seventeen years, Harry C. Shunk, Arthur Craw ford, Lee Edmonds and Frank Miller will bring to the minds of many the antics of old favorites gone by. This bunch of comedians with a score of others will drive care to the dogs, and are a safe guarantee for an evening s entertainment. They are at the Gennett theatre, Tuesday night, March 13th.. 5j - - Original and New Characterizations in "The Prince Chap." Intellectual exponents of the his trionic art are so continually endeav oring to create something new and original fur the stage that it is most cmncuit to capture ana harness an idea that has not already been exploited. But Walter N. Lawrence, the producing manager, and Edward Peple, the clever young author of this dainty drama have succeeded in bestowing on the public three charac ters that are handled in an unique and original way. The part of Claudia is portrayed by three different actresses. Helen Pullman, 5, Edith Speare 8, and Ethel Cliff ton, IS years old. Never before has any drama had more than two playing one part of character. Mary Ke ogh, as the slavery, "Pickers," does not imitate any stage slavery known and Frank Lamb, as Bunion, the butler. , is entirelv nninno nrifl. n sinprp immnS tne nights 1 it -a .... run at; the Madison m ' Square t , Theatre. .. Cyril Scott, as the Prince Chap portrays the author's character of .1 a.n dear, manlyi tender chap and the entwining of the life of 1 a pretty baby girl, growing, growing all the time until she i, reaches beautiful womanhood with his life and its woes and the culmination into romance is haidled deftly and in a way that is a departure from the usual manipulation of sentimental roles. Scott was a hit in New York City.;, Vaudeville at the New Phillips. There is not a "chestnut" on the bill that will be inaugurated at the New Phillips' this afternoon. Al though Cal Lankert is heard twice a day, week after , week, the public does not tire of 'his songs 'and this week he will be heard in "While the Convent Bells Are Ringing," and 1 Please Leave the : Gates Ajar." two compositions that re full of senti ment and' accompanied by handsome illustrations. The;- Dedwater Trio, novelty club jugglers, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Boyer, comedy acrobats, Dancing Downs, Augusta Bell, known as "the Juvenile Patti," and San ford and Darlington, who- put on a comedy; novelty known1 as "Twenty Minutes in Vaudeville, M are all new to , New Phillips . patrons. ager Murray, as all have been recommended to him as worthy of a place on his vaudeville program. In addition to this feast of good things the Philoscope will have two " new films, "A Leadville Holdup," that will prove highly exciting,' and "Awakens," designed primarily for comedy effects. Although there will be numerous counter attractions this week, it is not probable there will be any falling off in vaudeville patronage. MONDAY ASSIGNED TO ST. GREGORY AS POPS HS SXHIBITBD ORSAT AJCPIL. HE HADE BRITAIII GIIRISTIAU He Kept an Exact Catalofnt of Poor of Rom and Distributed Pro- ' 'visions to Them. March 12 is the day assigned to St. Gregory, the great,; who died in 604. He was . distinguished by . modesty, disinterestedness and religious, seal, tempered by a toleration which' could only eome from pufe benerolenee The popedom was thrust on him in 590. In exereieing the funetions of his high station he iezibitetd : great mildness and forebearance. One day before he attained the papal chair, walking through the market ia Rome, he was struck by the beauty of a group of young persons expeeed to be sold as slaves. In answer to his inquiry of who they were and whence they came, he was told they were Angeli, from the heathe island of Britain. "Verily, Angeli (angels)," he said (punning on the name), "how la mentable that the prince of darkness should be the master of a country containing such beautiful people! How sad that with so fair an outside there should be nothing of God with in. This incident led to a mission being sent to Britain, which thus owed its first recepton of Christian light to Gregory. Gregory kept by him an exact catalogue of the poor of Rome. In the beginning of every month he distributed to all the poor corn, wine, pulse, cheese, fish, flesh, and oil. He appointed officers for every street to send every day necessaries to all the needy sick. Before he ate he always ent off meats' from his own table to some poor persons. He often entertained several of them at bistable. In the light of modern sociology, the moral results from this wholesale apiear good, but the motives which prompted this charity must be acnowledged to have been highly ami able. Gregory was a weakly man, often buffering from bad health. He died aged sixty-four years. To him beongs the phrase that has become a formula for the Pope, "Servant of tne servants 01 uoa." His name, which is the same as ','Vigilantius," or "Watchman," be came, from veneration of him, a fa vorite one. Among other it was borne by a Scottish prince of the eighth century, the reputed progenitor of the clan McGrgor. It is curious to think of this formidable band of Highland outlaws of the seventeenth century, introducing later the famous Bob Roy of Walter Scott, as thus connected bv chain of historical cir cumtances with the gentle and saintly Gregory who first caused the lamp of Christianity to be lighted in Brit ain.
