BIG CROWDS AT THE NEW PHILLIP:
MANAGER MURRAY HAS ANOTHER GOOD BILL FOR ; HIS PATRONS. COMEDY SKETCtiESFLEASMS At tho Gennett Tonight a Packed I House Will See "Babes in Toyland." j Manager Murray of the New PhilHps ; had a delightful surprise over the ,big matinee audience that greeted the vaudeville bill at the New Phillips Monday. It was one of the Ijest matinee crowds of the season, ?nd was unusual considering the ,unavorable day. At night the theatre tas filled which was again rather remarkable considering that the city was storm-bound. Those who ventured out were well rejiaid for the program this week is a meritorious one throughout. Bryant and Sav'ille, black-faced comedy artists, are ajmong the best in this line seen 'at tlii house and they were received fith marked enthusiasm.. Their ability is not shown so much in their dialogue or 'in 'their conduct on the stage, as in the musical talent. Their turn is a; long one and every minute of it is' filled with a laugh. The Lynns put on a good comedy sketch, as do the Harrison Brothers. The! latter lilave an original comedy entitled, MThe Old Maid and Rube." Otto Weaver i clever as a band balancer, having some features to bis "work not seen, at the. New Phillips before. Cal Lankert sings two fine illustrated songs .and the motion . pictures, 'i Through the Matrimonial Agency" and "A Pleasant Trip," are of the biest. There is no reason why the bill should not prove a money-maker i "Babes in Toyland," Hamlin & Mitchell's mammoth production, will be the attraction at the Gennett theatre tonight. i This mere announcement cannot carry swjth it the full strength pf the ?yent. There was a time when such attractions as "Babes in Toyland" wiere denied local theatre goers, because of the .fear of managers . that there would be speculation on the merit of acNew-York success en tour, but lately it has been brought to the doors of the' people and '"hence the weeding out of a great many ordinary bookings and the advent of shows that are worthy of price and patronage." ' ; 1 ! ' ' 1 .'.: 1 :' I j" Babes in Toyland" i comes -with: practically a special train for three modern coaches ' are required to handle the company,' and two of the largest baggage cars are used to transport the great quantity of scenery and effects' used in the wonderful stb-J ry so cleverly interwoven by Glen McDonough ' and set to music by the peerless Victor Herbert.- . i 1 iThe company is complete and its chorus 'is one of the most attractive on the great circuit. ' The music is of that sort that lingers and there is a vein of comedy that blends excellently with the spectacular. i i The Palladium publishes more live : ... - . per." SUBMIT TO SURGEON'S KNIPE TO SAVE LIFE OF MAN BURNED. SACRIFICE INSURESBFCQVERY James J. Callahan Was Burned While ' Fighting a Fire in Chicago Flat Building. Chicago, Feb. 26. To save the life of a comrade, James J. Callahan, who was burned while fighting a fire in a flat building at 5126 Calumet avenue, forty men have given from one to two inches of thei rskin in order that it might be grafted on the seared body df their stricken friend. j As the flesh was cut from the arms of the men it was quickly transferred to the body of Callahan, who throughout' the two hours that, the operation was in progress,' lay uaeonscious on a' near by tatble. Two by two the men: filed int3 ;t! e operating room of the Michael Reese h.spital, where Dr. Emanuel Fii'Ml atai ted them.. Without a quiver -or sx cry of Spain the; inen Avatclied the surgeon's knife as it. cut from (l.-eir bared arms the required amount of epidermis. Then with a glance at the white, prostrate form of their comrade they quietly left , the room to make way for others who wore in waiting to make the sacrifice. - t Harris Davis was one of tbe men, who for the sake of a friend submitted to the painful operation. H was in charge of the squad and mnrehed them in a body to the hospital. "Come on, fellows," he said, "up with your sleeves and get ready j for business." Then as the two men designated by him entered th. operating room he would turn his Attention to the next two in line, until the surgeons announced that they had se cured enough -skin. Dr. Friend of the hospital said last night that he believed that Callahan would recover. "If he does so," said the physician, "and I think he will, it will be entirely due to the sacrifice of his friends.
