more conducive to the general welfare of the nation. So 4 here's hoping" John 1). has managed' to lose himself so completely as never again to be found. ; o A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. The consolidation of the Commercial Club and the Merchant's Association effected last evening, is a step in 'the right direction. The Commercial Club rejuvenated by its increased-membership, from this time forth will be something more than a mere name in the industrial development cf Richmond. The wisdom of this move is apparent. It is probable that th election of o Hi jeers in March will result in the selection of men willinjr and capable of ag2reaSveb" pushing Richmond's right to new industrial enterprises. This regeneration of the Commercial Club comes appropriately in the centennial year of the city. This year will see Richmond advertised far and wide, and it would fee difficult to find a better time for widely demonstrating the advantages the city has to offer to rew manufaeutring concerns. HE WHO RUNS AWAY I ; LIVES TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY. When John D. Rockefeller recently left for parts unknown did he have in mind a revision of the old adage 'he who runs away lives to fight another day'? Probably he feels that in this case discretion is the better part of valor, and that it wilj be wise to quietly disappear until the present outburst of indignation has been allayed, when he can return and practice his former nefarious business methods in peace. Rockefeller's flight is entirely in
accord with the course he has consistently followed throughout life. This man to gain the largest fortune in the world has not only debauched the code of commercial honesty of the nation, but also has illegally bent state and national legislatures, to do his will, and strangled 'competition through the iniquitous system of rebates and drawbacks. He has perjured himself on the witness' stand and has never been brought to' Justice, on account of his control of the courts. It has been : money, 1 more money, most money, and rtothirig but money, no matter how gained, with Rockefeller, practically from the day of his birth. Cut throat and underhand methods were nothing to him as long as the almisrhtly dollars kept rolling into the itching palms of his grasping hands. It is no wonder that a man of his stamp will run away when brought to task by the united public opinion of the nation. It would 'be a blessing if all the re
maining financiers of his particular
brand would also disappear into some foreign region and stay there. Plenty of good men would still be left to
manage the business affairs of the
country, and manage them .in at way

As usual the Senate is doing nothing. This the only thing the senate really does well.
- Castro seems likely to become a star headliner in the international vaudeville any day now.
v. Senator Beveridge has just declined an invitation to deliver the principal address at the annual commencement of Earlham college on June 13. The senator is receiving many such invitations and is declining them all as the demands of his public duties can not be foreseen so far in advance.
That was a pretty metaphor that Congressman Longworth used, but a careful reading of "Romeo and Juliet' ' will find that Shakespeare used
Theatrical ' managers wll drop Shakespeare However, this is better than the usual proceedurc of murdering him. 1 11
For the senate, the principal issue in the Statehood ilL ia r- the question whether the membership of the club shall be increased by four or by six.
However, if' must be remembered that the senate is doing a great and useful work in promoting the movement for the popular election of senators.
