COUNTRY BUTTER
OF POOR QUALITY
COWS DO NOT THRIVE ON DRY
FOOD WHICH MEANS BAD BUTTER.
CREAMERY VARIETY IS SOLD
In Large Quantities Daring Winter
Months Sale of it More Than Doubled.
The quality of country butter on the local markets continues very poor and only a small percentage of the butter offered by country residents can be accepted by the grocers. Cows are piving poprer milk each day, and with tie weather, which at this time in the year makes it difficult to "keep" better, the quality is falling low. A prominent grocer said yesterday that there will be little country butter sold for the. next two months, as the cows are not thriving on dry food, and until that time, the quality will be low and the price of good butter high. Creamery butter is of a fair grade and is retailing for from 33 to 35 cents per lb. Ordinarily, creamery butter forms about ten per cent of
the total amount used, but now there is more than fifty per cent of cream
ery butter consumed.

from .local and outside sources there
was an active outlet for the offerings at prices generally oc higher than yesterday., Home of the trashy lots were j-only about steady, but a large proportion of the supply was plaeed
at the advance. Competition was strongest for light hogs, and they sold to the ; best advantage. A few loads came in late, but nearly all buyers were still in the field, and closing prices were steady at the advance. Sales ranged from $6.00 6.07, and practically all the good hogs sold at $6.05. The top today is the highest, since September. Easy Outlet for Cattle. There was a fair Tuesday run of cattle but there was a continued scarcity of choice steers. The market opened with a good demand, both from local and outside sources and with active competition there was a comparatively easy outlet for the supply. In a general way the market was strong, but numerous sales were 10c above yesterday. There was a steady market for feeding cattle, bulls were as high as yesterday, but calves generally fully 25c lower. Fair Sheep Receipts. Receipts of sheep and lambs were only fair, but about equal to recent supplies. There was a good demand, especially from local killers, and although, on account of the small receipts, there was not much competition from outside sources, tradingfi was active, and there was a prompt transfer of the supply at steady
prices, compared, with yesterday. Most of the best lambs here sold at
$7.25, and ordinary to good kinds at $5.00(317.00. Best sheep sold at $5.00 and culls to good kinds at $3.00(rT

EXCITEMENT IN SOME SPECIALTIES WITH FEW LOSSES.
HURRIED EFFORTS TO SELL
Out at the Attractive Prices Ruling at the Outset Caused Sntstantial Setback.
Cattle,
New York, February 13. Opening prices in the stock market showed excited advances in some of the specialties and fractional gains predominated in the body of the list with a few scattered loses. The copper and smelting stocks were conspicuous. Anaconda jumped 12 and there were 12,000 chares of Amalgamated Copper sold at 117 and 118, compared with 115 on Saturday. The rise in Smelting reached 2, Northern Pacific 4, Great Northern preferred 2, Reading 1, and Union Pacific "1, Colorado Fuel a point, and Brooklyn Transit and National Biscuit large fractions. The United. States Steel preferred, Southern Railway and New York Central were off a small fraction. Hurried efforts to sell out at the attractive prices ruling at the outset brought a great deal of stock on the
market and prices had to be lowered very substantially before it was mar
keted. The reaction reached 7 points in Anaconda, 2 in Northern Pacific,
11 in Amalgamated Copper
and Smelting and 1 in Reading and Great Northern preferred. Some
stocks that had not benefited much
in the opening rise declined to a frac
tion below Saturday's closing. North
