Hisifrff TL'C CnilHATCn D!fi mlM. lilt LUUUHILU TIU '.- .11 he Seen at the Phillips This Yv'c 2k Shadographcrs Highly Spckeu of by Exchanges. The ''Little Johnny Jones" company which shows at the Geunett this evening will arrive in the city this morning. The big musical comedy will be greeted by an immense audience as everv seat in the house has been sold. -'Little Johnny Jones" conies heralded as one of the best light opera gems now being presented to the American public. There are sixty people in the company. At the New Phillips. It is anticipated that New Phillips patrons will be eager to welcome the return of vaudeville, which will be inaugurated at this house this afternoon after a week given over to repertoire by the Orpheum Stock Company. Inspection of the display advertisment for this week's bill will show that Manager Murray has not hesitated to spend money in securing the various acts and he believes that in the Alpine Sisters, reputed to be the only women shadowgra pliers in the vaudeville business, he is bringing a feature that will be particularly attractive. Major O'Laughlin, who will do some wonderful gun and baton spinging, lays claim to having no superior inthisline and if he proves better than many who have preceded dm, he will be well worth seeing. The Thompson Sisters, singers and lancei-s, and the Two Fantas, with 'Mike," the trick pig, also come uglily recommended and with Cal Lankert in illustrated songs and the notion pictures, round out a well balanced bill. The Philoscope film secured for this week will show "Life of a Newsboy" and "The Impossible Convicts," and are said to )e far above the average. Two splentid songs have been secured for Mr. T.ankert, who shows steady improvement in his work as a singer of illustrated songs. It is expected that 't will be necessary for many who desire to see the bill tonight to stand. CENTENNIAL ASSOCIATION. Will Meet at the Masonic Temple This Evening Report on Date of Observance. PEDIGREES TO-ORDER. Tb.rt.lns Trade In Coats of Arxnn. With Unease to Fit Tueiu. With all our boasted democracy certain classes of Americans are as keen in their pursuit of notable ancestry which will entitle tbeni to display coats of arms as the most snobbisa aristocrat could be. An authority iu heraldry made the statement 'awhile ago that only forty or fifty American families at the mo.t are entitled tj the insignia of nubility. Cut uuboJy cr.n convince the? average citizen who La a "made mowy" of tiny sch tl:ii;j. cn.l tlfett M'i;".;:"h wry voi:ifrtr;aMy :ot'i'.-.' ;f -z :i:v.:l.r:-:l' in ,-w Y !:. For instance, the- aims of Sir John Peeho as they appear in a window of thy chapel at Lulling ;toae, Kent, consist of two peach t;es bearing fruit, an old English E being imprinted up::t each poach. The Bacon escutcheon sdiows a boar and the Lamb family's three lamb:'. This tendency is well illustrated among the American families which realij' Lave inherited coats of arms. The arms of the Staudi.-h family consist of three? standing dishes, the Wheel ocks of New Jersey display three Catherine wheels, while the Carters of Philadelphia have three cart wheels, and the emblem of the Astor family is a yelljw astor. How a coat of arms may be utilised for decorative eflect. appears in the new Hotel Astor, which is one of the iao-;t smnptuou -ly furnished of New York's great hostelries. In frescoes and wall hangings, lace and linen, rugs and carpets, on glassware, china and silver, the aster appears in every conceivable form, fitted to every possible scheme of design. This, too, is an ancient use adapted to modern usefulness. When it is suggested that the use of family symbols is undemocratic the amateur in genealogy reminds us that Washington, John Adams, Livingston, Jay and many another Revolutionary champion of equal rights used a crest. Furthermore, there ia a tradition, at least not disproved, that the most Inveterate hater of monarchs, Oliver Cromwell, was having his own family tree looked through for titled ancestors at the time of his death. A Mixetl CoHtnme. It is said of the late Lord Salisbury that lie once had to dress at breakneck speed for a levee and in the absence of his valet plunged at a heap of things and Ihrow them on as they came. He appeared at court in the coat of the elder brethren of Trinity House, the trousers of a deputy lieutenant and a hat of the royal archers. Tutting on the finishing touches before the mirror, he bung bis sword upon the wrong side and gartered himself about the wrong knee. lie had assumed a waistcoat made in days when he was of less ample girth, so that between the hem of tills garment and the waist of tho trousers was a gap which all but himself observed. Nevr Gold Theory. Professor Frederick Soudy of Glasgow university holds the theory that gold is gradually disintegrating into other materials. He has visited tho gold deposits of Western Australia and New Zealand, and he expresses his conviction that in all probability gold, like radium, is at once the product of some other parent element and is itself changing to produce "offspring" elements. The professor laments the inadequacy of his resources in the way of gold upon which to experiment and points to the tons of gold perhaps disintegrating in the vaults of the Bank of England. Cannibalism In "Xevr Guinea. Cannibalism has not yet been quite stamped out in British New Guinea. The natives have well cultivated gardens, they occupy long settled villages, and their relations with Europeans are generally harmonious. In each village one of the most influential chiefs is selected as village constable, given a uniform, a pair of handcuffs, a brass badge and $5 a year and is kept under constant personal supervision by the six white magistrates. Crime is comparatively rare owing apparently to the fact that the natives are not allowed to obtain any Intoxicating liquor. Kick A&ninKt Football. There is nothing new about the present outcry against football." The game was prohibited in Scotland by .Tames IV.. and in England Edward II. held out pains and penalties for "hustling over large balls." It was also declared illegal in the time of Henry VIII.. and strenuous e .Torts were made by Elizabethan statesmen to suppress tbt? game, but without success. Dut where kings and queens failed the Puritans succeeded, as iu other phases of sport. Limited Capital. A young man entering business with little cr.pitnl in these days of giant combination-.. like a soldier In battle who Is reduced to his last few cartridges, must bo doubly careful In his aim and doubly zealous in his endeavor, for everything Is tt stake.
