WORDS OF PRAISE WELL MERITED BY A WEU KNOWN AX1TICI.E.
So much has been written by the Btandard medicial authorities, of all the several schools of practice, in praise of the native, or American, medicinal plants which enter into the composition of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, that in attempting to quote from the various works on Materia Medica one hardly knows where to commence, since they are bo voluminous that only the briefest and most imperfect reference can be presented in a short article like this. Briefly then let us say that the "Golden Medical Discovery" was named froi the Bturdy little plant Golden Seal, the root of which enters largely into its composition. Besides this most valuable ingredient, it contains glyceric extracts of Stone root, Queen's root, Black Cherrybark, Bloodroot and Mandrake root. Finley Ellingwood, M. D., an eminent practitioner of Chicago and Professor of Materia Medica in the Bennett Medical College of that city, in his recently published work on Therapeutics, says of Golden Seal root: "It is the most natural of stimulants to the normal functions of digestion. Its influence upon the mucous surfaces renders it most important in catarrhal gastritis (inflammation of stomach) and gastric (stomach) ulceration." Many other authoritfes as well as Dr. Ellingwood extol the Hydrastis (Golden Seal), as a remedy for catarrhal diseases of the nasal passages, stomach, bronchia, gall ducts, kidneys, intestines and bladder. Among these, we may mention Prof. John King, M. ., author of the American Dispensatory; Prof. J. M. Scudder, M. D.. n his Specific Medication" : Dr. Hale of the Hahnemann Med. College of Chicago: Grover Coe, M. D., of New York, in his "Organio Medicines." Dr. Bartholow of Jefferson Med. College and scores of other leading medical writers and teachers. All the foregoing eminent authorities extol the curative virtues of Golden Seal in cases of stomach, liver and intestinal weakness, torpor and ulceration of bowels. Dr. Ellingwood recommends it most highly, " In those cases of atonic dyspepsia when the entire apparatus, including the liver, is stagnant and inoperative." He also extols it most highly in the many weaknesses and derangements peculiar to women and ays, w It is a most important remedy in many disorders of the womb." Golden Seal root (Hydrastis), is an important ingredient of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription for weak, nervous, "rundown" women. But to return to the "Golden Medical Discovery " it may be said that its curative properties are not wholly dependent upon Golden Seal, valuable as it is, as other equally potant ingredients add greatly to its value and in fact are not less important than the Hydrastis, or Golden Seal. -In all bronchial, throat, lung and kindred ailments, Stone root, Black Cherrybark, Queen's root and Bloodroot, each plays as important a part in effecting the phenominal cures of "Golden Medical Discovery" as does Golden Seal. All these ingredients have the endorsement of prominent practitioners of all schools of medicine for the cure of diseases of the bronchia, throat and lungs,
Bought, and wiiicli iias been, lias born tho signature of been made under his perSignature of Tirn Tin ID An t(ni Of Queen's root, Prof. King says: "An alterative (blood purifier) unsurpassed by few if any other of the known alteratives. Most successful in skin and scrofulous affections; beneficial in bronchial affections; permanently cures bronchitis; relieves irritations; an important cough remedy; coughs of years' standing being cured; aids in bloodmaking and nutrition and may be taken with out harm for long periods." Queen's root, Golden Seal root, Stone root, Black Cherrybark and Bloodroot, all articles extolled by leading practitioners of all the schools, as the very best of cough medicines, are made especially valuable when combined with chemically pure glycerine which greatly enhances the curative action of all these ingredients in all bronchial, throat and lung affections, severe coughs and kindred ailments. Who can doubt the efficacy of such a compound, when scientifically made up, as in Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery? Who can doubt that it is a most effective remedy for the several diseases for which its ingredients are so highly recommended by the formost writers on Materia Medicaf It is in the cure of the more chronic or lingering, persistent, and obstinate cases of bronchial, laryngial and lung affections, attended by hoarseness and severe cough, which if neglected or badly treated would generally have run into consumption, that "Golden Medical Discovery" has won the highest praise from all who have observed its marvelous control over these and kindred affections. It is no cheap compound made-up of trashy ingredients lor free distribution, that curious people may experiment upon themselves as with the many fake nostrums so commonly sent out as "trial bottles." It has a forty year record, embracing many thousands of cures behind it, is sold at a reasonable price and may be found in all drug and medicine stores in this and many foreign countries. It will be seen from the above brief extracts tow well " Golden Medical Discovery" is adapted for the cure of all blood diseases, as, scrofulous and skin affections, eruptions, blotches, pimples and kindred ailments; also that it is equally good in all Catarrhal affections no matter where seated, and for all cases of indigestion, or dyspepsia, torpid liver, or biliousness and as a tonic and invigorator in all manner of weaknesses, and in nervous debility and prostration the above extracts amply show. Much further information as to the Eroperties and uses of " Golden Medical iscovery" and Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription for weak women, will be found in a little booklet of extracts from standard medical books which will be mailed free to any address on request, by letter or postal card, sent to Dr. R. V.Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y. All the several ingredients of Dr. Pierce's medicines will be found, from the reading of this little booklet, to have the strongest possible professional endorsements and recommendations for the cure of all the diseases for which these medicines are recommended. No other medicines for like purposes have any such endorsement. They are non-alcoholic, non-secret, safe and reliable. SOBER SUNDAY WAS SUCCESS
CHICAGO MAN KEEPS PROMISE TO STAY AT HOME ON SABBATH. FOLLOWS COURT'S PROGRAM And Spends One Day With Wife and Children Such Was Punishment of Police Judge. Chicago, Feb. 8. It was one of the happiest days in the life of Barney Plass. He stayed from morning till night, at his house, 267 Johnson street, getting1 acquainted with his family, as had been suggested by Justice Sabath. The experiment proved successful that Sunday and will mark an epoch in the career of Plass and his family. To manv persons the actions of Plass may seem commonplace, but to the principals in the experiment they mean much. Mrs. Plass and the three little children Oscar, Martha and Anna know the struggle of the husband and father, and his desire for the sociable companionship of Ins follows, who could he found only at the corner saloon. "If I'd l-nown how nice it really war; to sit around the stove- and teach the children their next Sunday's S;ihh:ifh school lesson T never would have gone to the saloon," said Plass in the afternoon, as he shifted his knees to toast the other side of his shins. Last week the head of the Plass family was taken before Justice Sabath to explain why he had driven his family out of their home on the previous Sunday, while in an intoxicated condition. Plass was frank and explained that the only pleasure was derived from his weekly "time" at the saloon, when lie was certain to get drunk. Then Justice Sabath, instead of administeringa fine as Plass had been led to expect, mapped out a program for future Sundays. The program was more than carried out, many lit tle features were added that the magistrate who is a bachelor never had conceived, and Plass went to bed in the evening the happiest man in Chicago. He had risen early in the morning, donned his Sunday suit, boiled short and good intentions. He then assisted his wife in preparing the echildren for Sunday school. The head of the household never dreamed that there were so many little things to be done for the children, and he decided that his wife had more work on her hand s than he did. Then he discovered that although Mrs. Plass ad taken the best care of the children's clothes, many articles could be added to their wardrobe, without verging upon the luxurious. He made a mental resolve that they should be secured before he spent another nickel at the corner saloon. Wlhile the children were at the Sunday school a few blocks away, Plass assisted his wife in preparing the dinner. He remembered the first few days of their married life when he had assisted in preparing many dinners, and fresh resolves were made. Later, when the children returned, Martha shyly placed the story of Red Riding Hood, which she had secured from the church library, in her father's hands an unexpected boldness on her part and asked him to read it to her. The afternoon slipped by as the father entertained his children, and Mrs. Plass pottered about the house in a nervous excitement brought on by the unexpected happiness. "Yes, papa has made good resolves, and we are going to get along as well as any family in Chicago, now," said Mrs. Plass, as she smiled up into the face of her husband. Plass smiled and nodded, saying he expected to carry out his resolutions. A Mystery Solved. "How to keep off periodic attacks of biliousness and habitual constipation was a mystery that Dr. King's New Life Pills solved for me," writes John N. Pleasant, of Magnolia, Ind. PHOIIOGBiPHS TO SUPPLANT TEACHERS
Ohio College in Embryo is to Have all its "Professors" Talking Machines. Columbus, O., Feb. 8. Should the intentions of Dr. William Alexander late of Heidelberg, Germany, but more recently of New York, be car ried out, Columbus will be the seat of the most extraordinary college in the world. Dr. Alexander was the eruest of a prominent business man in Columbus last week, and it is asserted that during that time the preliminary ar rangements for the organization of a corporation to revolutionize the method of disseminating knowledge were made. It was with the utmost reluctance that the doctor talked about the proposed college, but he finally expressed himself as follows: "We will utilize the phonograph in our work and by this means students in different parts of the world can have the same opportunities at home that are now afforded by the best colleges, aside from the hazing and rowdyism features. . "Only instructors of the first grade of ability will be employed and Europe and America will be drained of their greatest scholars and investigators in science to equip our college. "These will deliver lectures and make demonstrations each day just as is done in any regular college, but these lectures will he reproduced on phonographic records as manv tunes as is necessarv. "Our teachers of languages will be natives of the countries in which these languages are sjvoken. Thus the students will have the benefit of the accent, which so many teachers of language lack. "We will begin with GO instructors many of whom have been engaged, and this number will be increased as circumstances may demand. "Classes of not less than 50 will he formed all over the world. They will erect buildings for our laboratories, etc., which will be on a par with those of any college in the world. Then our classes must be organized and we will seek to employ such protection as we may for our plan of education in all of the civilized countries." Mr. Alexander is a native of Ohio, but has spent the greater part of his life in the universities and colleges of Europe. PLOT CHARGE iu II MILLIONAIRE SUING WIFE ACCUSED OF RESORTING TO PERJURED "PROOF." HEW SCANDAL IN PITTSBURG Coachman Is Brought Into Case Pretty Wife, It is Alleged, Became Familiar with Him. Pittsburg, Pa., Feb. 8. Pittsburg always can depend upon its millionaires to keep the domestic scandal pot a boiling. Hitherto it has been steel men principally, in their desire for a change of wife, who have replenished the pot. Now it is a paper millionaire. August Hartje by name, and the scandal he has provided has the distinction of being the most nauseating in Pittsburg's wide experience. As usual it is a divorce from his wife that Hartje is seeking. She is young, admittedly beautiful, the mother of two children, and rich in her own right, being the daughter of John F. Scott, who is regarded as more than a millionaire. Any kind of a divorce suit involving the names would have been sufficiently good scandal material in Pittsburg, but the divorce campaign methods of the paper millionaire and and their first sensational developments have made his suit a Bcandal of scandals. In his bill Mr. Hartje names as one of the corespondents Clifford Hooe, formerly their coachman. The court was furnished an alleged statement by the coachman admitting and giving details and dates concerning the charge made by Mr. Hartje. After signing his name to this statement the coachman disappeared. He is now in custody of Youngstown, O., charged with perjury. It is declared by attorneys for Mrs. Hartje that the husband's charges were the purest fabrication, designed to secure a divorce, that Hooe has confessed he was coached and paid for making the statement involving Mrs. Hartje, and that he was then smuggled out of the state and paid to keep away. Such is the nucleus of this, the latest scandal in Pittsburg millionairedom. There is still another sensation to come, and perhaps another and another. First of these, according to the attorneys who are acting fo r Mrs. Hartje, will be the implication of one of the city's best known men, another millionaire or thereabouts. It is alleged that it was this man who secured the statement, declared to be a perjury, from theeoachman, and paid him for his fictioa. There have been rumors of this

The story only came out iu all its blackness when Hooe safely was lodged in jail in Youngstown, and, according to Mrs. Hart je's lawyers, had put his name to another and altogether different statement, winch they say cont ails of a plot not only to secure a divorce, but to besmirch the character of Mrs. Hartje. Hooe is now held in jail in default of $10,000 bail. It was intimated today that mysterious efforts had been made to have the bail reduced with a view to securing the man's release. The intimation added that these efforts have been checkmated by the threats of Mrs. Hartje 'a attorneys to make public the man's second confession the moment his bail was reduced and paid.
