CROWDS ATTEND STOCK COMPANY
AT THE NEW PHILLIPS "A SOUTHERN ROMANCE" LAST NIGHT
"LITTLE JOHNNY JONES"
Will Pill Engagement at The Gennett Vaudeville There This Week Highly Entertaining.
IS THE STREET WHERE FIRE INSURANCE Is Written by J. P.I. WILLIAMS CALL AND LET US TALK ABOUT IT
Manager Murray cannot but feel gratified over the way in which the theatre going public is patronizing the Orpheum Stock company at the New Phillips this week. Such a good impression has been- made by the company that it is believed all who care in the least for repertoire will take advantage to see ' at least one production, and perhaps more. Last night there was a pleasing presentation of "A Southern Romance ' and tonight the bill will be "A Convict's Sweetheart," for Friday night, "Sherlock Holmes," and for Saturday night, "Tracy, the Outlaw." The ten-cent matinees daily at 2:30 o'clock are being well patronized. The specialties put on are high grade, and add much to the entertainment. Next week will be the usual vaudeville at the New Phillips, and Manager Murray has secured an expensive act in the Alpine Sisters, shadowgraphers, who are said to be the only entertainers of the kind in vaudeville. At the Gennett. Evervone who has seen the bill at the Gennett this week pronounces it equal to the best that ever has been there. It is replete with splendid acts of an unusually high character. This week's bill encompasses many phases of vaudeville entertainment and each one equals in merit any of its predecessors. Professor Schepp and his trained ponies and dogs alford an entertainment that is equal to any dog and pony show in the country. The animals perform on the limited space of the stage nearly all the evolutions common to a genuine ring performances and in cleverness and thoroughness excell anything presented under canvas. Art Adair presents a comedy musical act that is superior to any of the long list of similar performers that have appeared at the Gennett. Besides being an excellent musician, the comedy feature of the act abounds in real wit and humor of a high class. ; . j The Gennett will have a notable attraction Monday, February 12, when will be presented by a very large company, the famous musical play, "Little Johnny Jones." No actor or author has ever jumped with such bounds and leaeps into the lime light with such rapid strides as Geo. M. Cohan, the author and composer of Little Johnny Jones. He is not as yet twenty-seven years of age, yet he is the composer of a hundred or ' more successful songs, and the author of five phenomenally successful plays. One of his latest, "Little Johnny Jones" is credited with being one of the greatest musical successes of the, past five years, while the critics are giving him all kinds of credit for writing a play of such splendid merit, that he has, in a way, revolutionized the entire field of musical comedy. "Little Johnny Jones" is said to be almost a melodrama in the construction of its
plot and in the climaxes. It tells a coherent story, in a terse, well connected, almost thrilling manner, and introduces dramatic characters that are worthy of a modern play, in fact it is said " Little Johnny Jones" would make an excellent play without one note of music. But Mr. Cohan, following the lines of his previous successes, has introduced twenty or more brilliant musical numbers, which are sung by an ensemble of seventy-five people with thrilling effect.

"Angelina, life of my life and loveliest of women," said the young man, gulping something down that bad lodged in his throat and blushing as deep a red as ever a hot town was painted, "will you marry me?" "Oh, John," said the charming girl, taken back, but not over three inches, and speedily recovering them and adding two more for good measure, "this is so sudden!" "Sudden!" exclaimed the youth, recovering his composure, which he hail temporarily mislaid. "Where do you get that line of dope? Haven't I been courting you steady for three years now?" "Yes, all of that." she replied, "and it seems even longer, but pa and the boys wanted to make a bet with me this morning that you wouldn't propose for two years more, and I didn't have the nerve to take them up."

MAN'S DOWNFALL
Due to His Ungainly Garb So Chicago Club Women Assert. Chicago, Feb. 7. Clubwomen of Chicago are discussing the unique address given by Miss Agnes Repplier, the Philadelphia essayist, before the Friday club of this city. The speaker declared that man's downfall is due to the garb he wears. According to Miss Repplier, man's adoption of ill-becoming and inartistic dress revealed his real tigliness and weakness, and in the light of the revelation woman has begun to assert herself, and will eventually have complete ascendency. The lecture was given at the residence of Mrs. Kellogg Fairbank, where Miss Repplier is guest. She spoke on "The Temptation of Eve." "I sincerely believe," said Miss Repplier, "that much of what is now called the 'woman's movement,' much of the audacious and unwarranted self-assertion of the sex, is due to the clothes which men have elected to wear."
