WHY WOMEN HATE GIVEN LAST NIGHT
BY THE ORPHEUM STOCK COMPANY AT THE NEW PHILLIPS. NO FREE SEATS FOR LADIES Company Feels That It Can Make Money Without It No Vaudeville Last Night. Biff business was again the order at the New Phillips last night the passage way to this popular place of amusement being blocked for a considerable time so great was the run for seats. Last night was the last on which the offer of a free seat to ladies when accompanied by one paid ticket held good but it is not believed that this fact will cut down the attendance. It has been so well established that the Orpheum Stock Company is far above the average in every way and those who have atipndpd r so loud in tlieir iniisea Mint lm ottanr1inia ia orriofitoil 4 r inl crease rather than to diminish. Perry Finn, the Carthage florist has acci dentally originated a handsome new variety of the carnation. The new flower is large and unusually perfect, has variegated color, being a faint ping, striped with dark pink. It is a sport from "enchantress," a pale pink flower, differing very widely from it. The sprout is from a slip, which was planted a year ago this month. When this particular slip came into bloom this winter, its flowers were noticed at once, and now every slip from the plant will be started for another year. The new flower, the only one of its kind in the world, is S1 inches in diameter, and it is thought can be made to expand to 4 inches bv cultivation. Other new varieties of the carnation have been sold by their originators as high as shu.uuu. rinu claims mat nis new varietv beats anvthing ever before produced in that line, and places the high valuation of $50,000 upon it. "With commendable home pride, the florist proposes to give the new flower some name suggestive of "beautiful Carthage." M r AAA -W til 1". Scrub yourself daily, "you're not clean inside. The tioycott in China against Amer ican goods continues,, and the- problem of securing satisfactory adjustment of the difficulty that ha arisen becomes more and more complex. Ttfie Chinese merchants declare they win not handle American imports, until: the American in the laws goveroinft exclusion of Chinese from the United States. Although congress has been in session since early in December, no such legislation Is yet in prospect. The Chinese minister at Washington recently telegraphed his government that it wus extremely im probable legislation sstch as the Chinese desire would be enacted. The methods of the boycotters are. unique and characteristic of the orient: The Chinese who. re engajred in keep ing Americau goods out of their eouiir try do not hesitate to threaten with (Tenth those whn refuse to ohev instntv tions. There is a figure of a tortoise, upon which are Characters meaning "cold blooded animal." The notice ends with a threat which signifies more than the English equivalent of the characters express, but which may be translated thus: "Those vh- hnv American iroods rend thiS They shall receive adequate treatment.'

WHO'S YOUR FATHER?
FARMER ASKED ARCHDUKE. When Told Ha Suggested the Asylum as Fit Place. London, Feb. 6. An anecdote, hitherto unpublished, concerning Archduke Francis Charles, father of the Emperor of Austria, appears in a new book written by a retired diplomat. During a walk alone in the Styriam hills, the archduke got into conversation with a talkative farmer, who, after giving a good deal of information about his own family, suddenly asked the archduke r "What's your father?" "Emperor," was the answer. "Look here, rr said the farmer, "if you want to be f unity don't you shout. There' are gendarmes about, and you might easily get run in for lese majeste! I dare say you've a brother. What's- he?" "Oh, he's an emperor, too." "Well, you're a funny chap," said the farmer, laughing heartily. "Have you any evhildren ?"' "Yes, thank God; there's my boy, Francis Joseph."' "What's hef" "Emperor." "Ha, ha!" roared the farmer, digging the father of emperors in the ribs. Have you any more of that sort?" "Yes, a second called' M!ax." "Isn't he an emperor " "Yes, he is also an emperor." After relieving his feelings by giving a wild leap in the air, the farmer clapped the archduke on the shoulder and said, "Look here, old friend. The next time you're passing Mariazell asylum drop in and see if thei-e happens to be a place vacant." The End or the "World. of troubles that robbed E. II.
