The sudden cold. wave has increased the demand for oysters and the grocers immediately commenced to experience a rush on them. The price of oysters has been steady all winter, having been 35 cents per quart hince September. . The supply is equal to the demand and it will be Iossible to have soup without paying advanced prices for it. Chickens will be sold at an advance of two cents on the pound today, the price being 17 cents per lb. The supply is almost gone and as thousands of chickens are each week shipped from the smaller towns of the county to the large cities, almost all the chickens have been sold by the poultry raisers. CHICAGO MARKETS Wheat Weak on Large Argentine Shipments and Milder Wave Than was Predicted; Foreign Corn Prices Higher. Chicago, February 2. Large shipments from Argentine and the failure of the predicted cold wave to develop in full strength in the winter wheat belt of the United States had a weakening effect on the wheat market here. Many traders who bought yesterday on the expectation of much colder weather were free sellers. Commission houses were the . principal buyers. May opened e to c lower and later sold at 84y2c. Bullish for Corn. Sentiment in the corn pit was bullish mainly because of higher prices at Liverpool. Commission-houses took the greater part of the offerings. May opened unchanged to c higher, and for a time held within these figures. Trading in the oats pit was quiet and the market was inclined to be easy. Local receipts were somewhat in excess of the estimated amount arrivals today being 131 cars. Provisions were firm on an active general demand. Chicago Grain and Provisions. (Furnished by O., G. INDIANAPOLIS MARKETS
Hog Prices Are Getting Close to the Six Dollar Mark; One Sale at $5.90 Healthy Cattle Market. Indianapolis, February 2. Receipts 7,000 hogs, 1,400 cattle and 100 sheep, against 7,617 hogs, 1,033 cattle and 105 sheep a week ago and 10,077 hogs, 1,242 cattle and 86 sheep a year ago. Receipts of hogs continue of small volume and there is a further up ward movement in values, the top being closer to the $6.00 mark than it has been since September 12, 1905. When the market opened the supply in sight was small and with active competition between all buyers there was an easy outlet for the offerings at a general advance of 5c over yes terday. The supply was soon placed on that basis, but the demand had not been satisfied. Consequently there was strong competition, especially from outside sources and the highest prices of the day an advance of 10c, were paid for a few extra good kinds arriving late. The range was from $5.605.90 and the bulk of the supply sold at $5.705.80, although there were several sales above and below these prices. Active for Cattle. Receipts of cattle were only fair for Friday, and with all buyers in the field and a continued good demand fboth from local and outside sources the market was active and there was an easy outlet for the offerings at steady to strong prices as compared with yesterday. Occasion ally sales were higher. There was a good healthy market for all kinds of cattle, and from the seller's standpoint the situation was more satisfactory than it has been for some time. Thus far this week most of the steers have made a gain of 10 15c and female butcher cattle are selling as high as they have at any time in the last month. There was an active demand for feeding cattle at steady prices, bulls sold promptly at steady prices and calves were generally 25c lower. Small Supply of Sheep. Another very small supply of sheep and lambs arrived, and there was no quotable change in the situation as compared with yesterday. NThe few small bunches offered were soon taken by local butchers at steady prices compared with . yesterday. Lambs sold for $5.007.40, while the best sheep sold as high as $5.00 and culls as low as $3.00. Cattle. THE STOCK MARKET WAS IRREGULAR
PRICES ROSE BUOYANTLY IN SOME CASES, PRESSURE IN OTHERS. t SOUTHERN IRONS FEVERISH Rapid Rises in Entire Group Heaviness of Morning Wore Off and " Unward Tone Prevailed. New York, February 2. The tone of the opening stock market was very irregular. Prices in some cases rose buoyantly, while at other points pressure to sell caused declines. Great Northern preferred rose 4, Amalgamated Copper 1, Republic Steel lifc, Lead 1, and Rock Island preferred and Canadian Pacific . Union Pacific was forced down . The buoyancy of special stocks failed to make much impression on sentiment, and when a drive was begun against Reading the market weakened sympathetically. Reading fell 11A below yesterday's closing. The Hifl stocks reacted iy2 to 2V2 and the Pacifies, Grangers and United States Steel stocks sold a fraction below yesterday's final figures. Some of the closely-held specialties were marked up materially. Tennessee Coal gaining 7, Rock Island preferred 1 and Metropolitan Street Railway 1. A Rally in Reading. A rally of a point in Reading and a recovery to the top in Amalgamated Copper steadied the market. Later Amalgamated Copper lost its grain, 'and the whole market sold off. The Southern iron group rose feverishly. Tennessee Coal 8, Republic Steel 12. Canadian Pacific gained 1. The losses reached 3 in Northwestern, 22 in Colorado Fuel and in Reading, and 1 to iy2 in Union Pacific, St. Paul, Atchison and Baltimore & Ohio. Movement Upward. The general irregularity and heavi ness of the morning wore off and there was a uniform movement upward after 12 o'clock. Some of the transcontinental stocks reached the top figure, Union Pacific crossing 158. The Rock Island stocks, which have long been dormant, were bought heavily, advancing the' common a point and the preferred 2. NEW YORK STOCKS. ' (Furnished by O. G. Murray.) , open close.
