SUGAR CHEAPER THAN LAST YEAR

ONE OF VERY FEW STAPLE ARTICLES THAT IS DOWN IN PRICE. ALTHOUGH MADE BY TRUST A Dollar Buys Eighteen PoundsFew Years Ago it Bought But Thirteen. Ones of the few staple article which is cheaper this year than last is granulated sugar. The price of sugar is controlled exclusively by the trust and for some reason two pounds more are being given for $1 than at this time last February. Some grocers account for this by saying that more sugar is being produced abroad and the American product is not sought after as much as formerly. At present, $1.00 buys 18 lbs. and twenty-five pound sacks sell for $1.30. A few years ago, sugar was ns high as $1.00 for 13 lbs. LOCAL MARKETS COUNTRY TRODUCE. . (Paid by the Dee Hive Grocery.) Prediction of a Cold Wave Advanced Wheat; Active Covering by Shorts and Offerings Light Considerable Corn Buying. Chicago, February 1. An official prediction of a cold wave over the wheat-growing parts of the United States steadied the wheat market here. There was a fairly active demand by shorts and commission houses, but offerings were rather light. May opened c lower to VhC"1 higher, sold up to S4(aS4c, and held steady around S-iVc. Small Receipts of Corn. Small loeal receipts of corn caused considerable buying in the pit, and Resulted in a firm tone. May opened unchanged to a shade higher and sold up to 441,4( Oats were a trifle firmer, on fair demand by local traders. The feature of trading in provisions was free selling of pork by brokers.
