result, of the election was known,

we had some excitement here over

the election, but it was tame in comparison to a hot contest in New York. If the Nationalists had seen to the registration of their voters as we do in New York this division would have elect ed a home ruler. They have a lot to learn over here, but the registration laws are framed to make the enjoyment of suffrage as difficult as possible. A great many Nationalists are virtually disfranchised by these regulations. "It beats me how any Irishman, whatever his politics, could vote for an Englishman like Long, who was turned down by his own English constituency. 'M believe in home rule and would like to see Ireland get it, but I would rather see an Irish republic with a president chosen by the people every four years. "The Irishmen in America are better patriots than many of their countrymen here. Why, Long was actually cheered when in a speech he told the people here that the Irish were not fit to govern themselves. In talking about the general political outlook, Mr. Croker said: "Campbell-Bannerman is a strong man and an honest man, but some of his lieutenants are not so friendly to

Ireland as I could wish."

The voting for Parliament is practically over, and as a result of the general election the Liberals will find themselves at the meeting of the House of Commons with a majority of more than eighty over all the other

parties combined. Only ten contests remain to be decided. The totals now are Liberals, 371 ; Unionists, 157; Irish Nationalists, 82; Laborites, 50. Two former cabinet ministers, II. II. Asquith, in East Fife, and R. R. Haldane, in Haddingtonshire, have been re-elected by good majorities. Among the interesting personalities declared elected today was J. M. Robertson, who captured the Tynesdale division of Northumberland

(from the Unionists for the Liberals.

Heretofore he had been a staunch Unionist. The Unionist stronghold, County Antrim, has been breached for the

that a-gelic perfection is rarely attained on earth, and that :.'o , criniient i;i its administration is, by the nature of our system, imperfect, and in many instances is the result of con; promises and concessions unou the of both or all contending forces. I contend that the golden c' ord of "civic righteousness," which is but another name for justice and equality of rights, runs all the way through the purposes and policies of the liepublican party, which in all its history has contended for those measures and results that were and are best for our country and its loyal citizens. As a political party it stood for the abolition of slavery, the suppression of rebellion, the maintenance of the public credit, the restoration of a sound currency, the liberation of Cuba, the keeping of our flag floating in Hawaii, Porto Rico and the Philippines. It stands today for these results, and more. It insists on the correction of abuses by great corporations, for the enactment of measures promotive of our Avhole country's development and the material Avelfore of all our people. It stands for the building of the Isthmian canal, for

the improvement of our rivers and waterways; for the lawful restraint of railroad corporations, for the abrogation of trusts in restraint of trade and detrimental to the public just rights; for the redemption of our arid lands and desert wastes; for the enlargement of our foreign trade and the interests of commerce and civilization in our Island possessions and the far East. These great interests of the American people appeal to the best purpose of our citizenship and the loyalty of our party the greatest that has ever wrought for the. welfare of mankind in this and

all countries. The question that comes to us today is, shall we as members of this great party join in the effort to disintegrate it as a political party and take from it the power to administer the government? Shall the sly old Fox of the Democratic party ride into power on the waves of popular hatred for corruption, graft and bossism? I trust not. Let the Re

publican party shake off everything

in the nature of bossism and factional strife, and with an eye single to

the welfare of the whole people, move toward victory in the contests of 190G and 190S. Faltering or mistaken wobbling in this campaign may again

plunge our country into the vortex

of financial distress and industrial

paralysis. Remember that party or

ganization and contention is essential

to a Republican form of government

and that in the party of Lincoln,

Morton and McKinley, there is wis

dom and security for the people of

the whole country, in the future as

in the past.
