virulent ventilat

ed rooms. Dr. Balier says the virulent bacilli from infected mice multiply abundantly and greatly increase the danger of pneumonia to human beings in the house. "These germs from mice," Dr. Palier says, "lose their virulence after a time. Thus a person may breathe the germs whose virulence are well nigh exhausted, and so have a mild case of pneumonia, and vice versa." Dr. Palier says he does not believe pnuemonia is spread by kissing. Nor does he believe it is due to changes in weather. Furthermore, the disease is not due to depression. Persons apparently in good health suddenly may develop pneumonia, whereas others who aie weak may

not get it.

It is expected the new theory will

raise the price of house cats.

New York, Jan. 29. Pneumonia is due to mice and not to the weather, according to Dr. E. Palier of this city. The microbe causing pneumo

nia, he says, is found in the mouths of nearly all healthy individuals, but

does not acquire dangerous virulence

until it passes through a susceptible animal like the house mouse. He

has proved his theory, he says, by ex

periments.

"Let us consider," said Dr. Palier,

months of December, January, Feb

ruary and March, there usually are many mice in houses, especially where the plumbing is defective and

whieh are in general in poor sanitary

condition.

"Mice, as is well known, work

themselves under the sinks and hence

are mostly abundandant in houses

wnere tne plumbing is not open, where there are many nooks and corners around sinks. In trying to obtain mice for experiments I learned from many persons that they are more abundant in the house in winter and early spring. Young mice seem especially abundant in the month of March. "Young mice particularly are susceptible to the pneumonia bacillus. Young mice come into the rooms to look for food, and they easily can get inoculated with human suptum. Then they spread the virulent bacillus which they have developed, and
