THE MuruNING PALLADIUM SATUDAY, JANUARY 27. 1906.

CONDITIONS ARE REVERSED NOW

APPLES ARE CHEAPER THAN ORANGES ON THE RICHMOND MARKET. CHICKENS MAY ADVANCE Trom Two to Four Cents on the Pound Turkeys Are Still Scarce. With turkeys retailing at from twenty-five to twenty-eight cents per lb. and oranges half as expensive as jipples, the markets of Richmond present a different appearance than at the same time four or five years ago. Then' turkeys were selling for about the same price to the 'pound as are chickens now and apples were cheap and plentiful. Yesterday, many of the grocers received orders fur turkeys, which they could not buy anywhere in the county and if the turkeys become more scarce it will be necessary to nrrauge a week ahead for. a Thanksgiving bird. Fewer were offered yesterday than last week and at this rate, the price is sure to jump higher,, AH of the grocers have advertised to sell the best, oranges for 19 cents per dozen today. Apples retail at CO cents per peck, while GO cents would buy about two pecks of these oranges. The home fruit has become the 'uxairy and the Florida product takes the place of the old time eating apple. Chickens are reported as being much more scarce this week than formerly and a prominent grocer said yesterday that in another week the price will probably rise from 2 to 4 cents on the pound. x LOCAL MARKETS COUNTRY PRODUCE. . Hog Prices Held Steady With Receipts. 7500$ Trading Fairly ActiveCattle Market Pair and Sheep NormaL ' Indianapolis, January 26. Receipts 7,500 hogs, 100 cattle and 250 sheep, against 8,159 hogs, 1,364 cattle and 76 sheep a week ago, and 13,415 hogs, 1,534 cattle and 40S sheep a year ago. Receipts of hogs were a good average compared with recent supplies. All buyers were in the field. Trading was fairly active at steady prices. Occasional sales of mixed hogs were lower, but they were offset by sales of choice light hogs that were higher. The closing market was steady with opening prices. Sales ranged from $5.35 to $5.72y2 and the bulk of the supply sold at $5.45(25.60. Receipts of cattle were small for Friday, but with the stale offerings carried over from yesterday the supply on sale was fair. There was a scarcity of choice kinds and with the small supply this stimulated the buyinjr and the market was more active than it has been for a few days. All the good cattle sold steady to strong as compared with yesterday and occasionally there was a little . advance. The less, desirable grades, however did not sell to any better advantage. There was a fair demand both from local and country sources for feeding stock and they sold at steady prices. The demand for bulls was not quite as good as it has been heretofore this week and prices were 10c lower. Calves sold generally 25c under yesterday. The demand was about equal to the supply of all kinds of cattle and at the close the clearance was better than it has been for several days. There was a normal supply of sheep and lambs, but there was a scarcity of good kinds, and none in any line good enough to command top prices. There was only fair competition, and trading was quiet, but the offerings finally sold at about steady prices compared with the way equal kinds spld yesterday. There were no lambs here good enough to bring over $7.00, and other sales ranged from $5.006.75. There were no sheep good enough to bring over $4.00, and other sales ranged from $2.503.75. ,

MARKET STRONG ACTIVE OPENING

LARGE BUYING ORDERS IN ALL LEADING SPECULATIVE FAVORITES. READING IS FORCED BACK And Heavy Realizing Sales Forced Whole List to Sell OffStronger Later. New York, January 26. Prices started upward at the opening of the stock market, and there were large buying orders in all the leading speculative favorites. Anaconda jumped 9 points. Gains' ran to about a point in "Reading, Brooklyn Transit and Colorado Fuel and a large .fraction in Union Pacific, the subsidary Pennsylvania stocks, St. Paul and Amalgamated Copper. The market gave a good demonstration of strength up to about 10:30, when a vigorousattack on Heading drove it back 2 points from the best and caused a general selling of other stoek3. Prior to the decline opening gains had been extended in all directions and several stocks in which there is a unity of interest made exceptionally good showings. The rise reached 214 in Colorado Fuel, 2 in Lead and 1 to 14 in Locomotive, Smelting, Norfolk & "Western, Chesapeake & Ohio, Missouri Pacific and Northern Pacific. All of these gains were reduced. The whole market sold off when Reading was forced back 314c from the best to 1514, and gains were generally wiped out. The market then turned strong and animated. Ontario & Western mada a gain of 2, Baltimore & Ohio, St. Paul, Northwestern and Amalgamated Copper about iy2, Union Pacific 1, and Erie, United States Steel preferred, Metropolitan Street Railway and Sugar 1. Reading rallied a point, but yielded again, and the advance elsewhere was checked. " Speculation quieted down a good deal in the early afternoon and changes either way in the representative stocks , were not numerous or important. The market was somewhat lower all around outside of a handful of minor stocks that advanced materially. ; NEW YORK STOCKS. (Furnished by O. G. Murray.) open close Amal. Copper .111 Am.
