Professional Operators Followed Pools in Various Low Priced Stocks.

New York, January 17. Opening dealings in the stock market yesterday showed an advancing tendency in prices except that a few of the in

ternationally listed stocks were slightly depressed in sympathy with Loudon. The conspicuous gains were in the specialties. Anaconda fell 3. There were gains in National Lead V2f Colorado Fuel a point and Northern Pacific, Missouri Pacific and United States Steel preferred large fractions. A variety of stocks made up the early market and the fluctuations continued to be of a striking character in a number of them that are not generally prominent. Those with a good dividend-paying record fluctuated within narrow limits and were

not as actively dealt in as usual. Professional operators followed up the efforts of cliques and pools interested in various low-priced stocks, the bulk of speculative interest in them and the comparatively small amount of money required to carry them presenting inducements. Pressure against the active leaders did not meet any effective resistance until Amalgamated Copper had been forced a point under yesterday and the general Western railroad group a fraction. Confident buying of Heading strengthened the well-known stocks afterward. Union Pacific and St. Paul rallied to good fractions over last night and Amalgamated Copper recovered fully, but stocks continued to come on the market and the demand became languid and prices lower. Northern Pacific, Colorado and Southern lost 1 and Anaconda 0. Buying in large blocks of Baltimore & Ohio lifted it to 110 at noon, and stiffened prices elsewhere. More interest was manifested in stocks of the higher grade, the large

absorption of Heading and Baltimore

& Ohio arousing a better inquiry for

the prominent railroads and special ties. Chicago, St. Paul and Tennes see Coal recovered their earlier loss

es and there were gains established

of 1 to VA, in the St. Paul stocks.

Missouri Pacific, Louisville & Nash

Past Year Has Been Very Prosperous and 'Local Plant is Working Nights. The American Seeding Corporation having one of its largest branch factories in this city, the Hoosier Drill Works on North E street, yesterday declared their annual dividend

;o all stockholders. The last year ended a prosperous

season for the company, and at present the local 'branch is working nights in order to meet the orders that it has to fill. The number of men employed at the plant is the largest that has ever been at work there at one time and, the pay roll now numbers 300. Most of the shipments are being made to the Northwest by way of Minneapolis and on Saturday eight

cars will be shipped to Buenos Ayres, South America.

Indianapolis reports that the supply of sheep and lambs was small, and there was no change in the market, as compared with the last few

days. Lambs sold for. $S.OO doAvn,

yearlings for $G.OO down and sheep "for $5.00 down. Further reports from Indianapolis state that the hog supply was small enough to cause general surprise. When the market opened there were hardly enough to accommodate a normal demand from local packers. There was only a fair demand from outside sources but trading was fairly active, with packers liberal buyers. Occasional sales of mixed hogs were 10c higher, and some sales of light hogs little better than steady.

Notwithstanding additional reports of damage from India and Argentine, the Chicago wheat market was inclined to be weak because of free selling by local, traders.

According to the Wall Street Journal the gross business of Marshall Field's retail store last year was between $52,000,000 and $53,000,000. This is an increase of approximately 25 per cent, over 1904. It is predicted that the figures for 1906 will exceed those of 1905 in all departments.

Owing to the excellent

reason in Florida, the markets of Richmond present almost the same

appearance in January as m June. J drape J? nut, two rm ,-n..;tv nf fmite nnl Strawberries, ner

garden vegetables shipped from the

southern states and from Lalitorma, which go to make a grocery resemble a market in the height of summer. Strawberries are about the greatest luxury to be had just at present and the demand for them in this city is so small that six or eight quarts are enough to supply it each Saturday. The grocers are selling first class strawberries for $1.00 per quart and there is no, hope of this price being any lower for at least a month. There is a great deal of difficulty iu getting any berries shipped here, because this is the busy season in Florida, where the growers have the whole country to supply with fresh fruits and the demand in New York City alone is usually equal

to the whole supply. The berries are shipped in refrigerator crates which

are heavy, and the express charges figure largely in making the price so

high.

Head lettuce and Brussells Sprouts also come from Florida. Head lettuce sells at ten cents per head and there

is a good demand for it. Brussells Sprouts are not so popular, but are called for almost every week by some

of the more fastidious livers.

JNew tomatoes from Florida are commencing to be used, and although

the quality is not so .very good, they

are improving steadily. The price is from five to eight cents apiece and there will be no change soon. The

supply of tomatoes is very limited

and it will be several weeks before

they are more plentiful.

Cucumbers, mangoes and egg plant remind one of summer. Cucumbers i a i r 1 .

popular, however, and not many are

are poor in quality and very scarce

Twenty-five cents is the price asked

for one-fourth of a peck of Florida beans and for this reason they are

not much of a temptation.

About the only thing that the Jan

nary market lacks is fresh peas. It

will be ten days or more before the

earliest peas put in their appearance

and more than that much longer be

fore they will be of extra quality,

The local supply of celery has been exhausted and California is now

shipping enough to satisfy the de

mand. The California product is o

excellent quality and is selling well

for ten cents per bunch. Fresh mushrooms from Virginia

are often ordered but few are used at

90 cents per lb. California cauliflower is fairly popular at 25 cents per head.

Radishes, young onions and lettuce

are all grown in the hot houses of

Richmond and are selling at the same

prices as in the summer months. The

demand is good and the supply un-

MARKET NOTES. Shares of the Walsh railroads

have all been deposited with the Cen-I

tral Trust Company of New York city. The Chicajro banks, which naturally are the temporary owners of the Walsh assets, including the securities of the railways, agreed it was best that the certificates of the line be escrowed with an institution other than the Chicago banks. To this end the Central Trust was chosen. The Boston News Bureau says:

"We understand that the Amalga

mated paid $65 a share for $15,500.000 par value of Anaconda'-' stock

when the Amalgamated was onranized. This was bought of the Rothschilds, and represents 620,000 shares, costing more than five years ajro..$65 a share, or $260 a share as now quoted in New York. This would make the main asset of the first Amalgamated promotion stand at a cost to the company of $40.3000,000. After
