Taken all in all, it will keep the makers busy to keep track of and eompete in all the events. Joe Tracey is now en route to Europe with money to purchase the fastest car possible for the Orinond meet. F. A. Grnber of Xew York Makes Operatio Hit In Italy. A. recent cablegram from Milan, Italy, tells of the striking operatic success scored by Francesco (J ruber of Now York. At the Yereel'.i theater, Yereelli, Italy, Mr. (1 rubor sang the leading tenor role of "La Tiwiata" with such brilliancy as to win the unqualified approval of prominent Italian critics. THE question of admitting new members to the American sisterhood of states is always an interesting one. but it has peculiar interest in the case now before the attention of congress. Four, different territories are uuder consideration In this connection. They are Arizona, New Mexico, Indian Territory and Oklahoma, and each ha3 a history full of stirring aud romantic incidents. The history of the two southernmost territories is linked with that of old Mexico, and proud and warlike dons and zealous priests and friars figure in the early annals. The Indian Territory has witnessed the progress of the red man upward from a primitive state to one of comparative civilization and enlightenment. The name Oklahoma brings to mind the remarkable scenes which ensued when the broad lands which comprise that territory were opened up for settlement auu populous towns sprang up in a night where before had been but the teuantless prairie. It would be possible to make four states out of the four territories, but that is not likely to happen. In discussing the question in his recent message President Iloosevelt said: "I recommend that Indian Territory and Oklahoma be admitted as one state and that New Mexico and Arizona be admitted as one state. Nothing has taken up more time in the congress during the past few years than the question as to the statehood to be granted to the four territories above mentioned, and after careful consideration of all that has been developed in the discussion of the question I recommend that they be immediately admitted as two states." The statehood fight is a somewhat complicated one, into which racial prejudices, politics and various other considerations enter. Many of the people of Arizona, especially those living in the northern part of the territory, are opposed to the proposition of admission with New Mexico on the ground that they would be dominated in all tilings by the people of that territory, with whom, they say, they have little in common. In northern Arizona there is a population made up largely of immigrants from the northern and middle states, while New Mexico is

F. A. GKCUER, NEW OPERATIC TESOK. true Caruso quality. The similarity in pnr-v,r.n '"tween Mr. Gruber and Caruso is such as to have won for him the appellation "Caruso the Second." Mr. Gruber is a son of Colouel Abe Gruber, the well known leader in New York politics, and he is a grandson of one of Germany's foremost tenors. Ills grandfather was the first man In Germany to sing Wagnerian operatic roles under Wagner's direction. Mr. G ruber's repertory is an extended one, including the first tenor roles in "Lucia di La turner moor," "Faust" aud "Cavafteria Itustieana." His dramatic talents, too, have won recognition, and Ileinrich Conried of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, is reported to have offered the tenor a flattering contract for appearances in America neit season.
The Classified Advertisement is one of the most unique of modern newspaper inventions. It is small and unpretentious, but it seizes upon the interest of the reader with an iron grip and will not let go. It sets him dreaming of an opportunity to purchase a farm, or a business opening, or a chance to establish a profitable agency at home; of a chance to secure a position, or where to rent a house, or room on short notice. You will note below a modest half column as the beginning of our Department of Classified Advertising. This department, small at present, will in a short time assume large proportions, and a class of people will be formed here just as in other cities, who buy a newspaper for the sake of the advertising it contains.

ish lineage. Opposition to admission of Arizona with New Mexico lias also arisen among the mining companies of the former territory, it i.-s stated that these corporations can operate more independently and profitably under a territorial form of government than they might be able to under statehood and do not care to risk a change. There is substantial unanimity of opinion in favor of admitting Indian Territory and Oklahoma, but opinion
differs whether they .should come in as one state or two. It h;is been assented that every citizen of both territories Is in favor of single statehood if it can be secured and that a large majority is in favor of joint statehood if nothing better can be obtained. The people of Indian Territory have adopted subject to ratification by congress, a state constitution and a complete state organization. They have chosen the name of "Sequoyah" for the proposed new state, thus perpetuating the name and services of the famous Cherokee chief who invented the Cherokee alphabet and did so much to advance the Indians of his own and other tribes in education and industry. In Indian Territory there are a great many red men of considerable fortune and no small educational acquirements. Tribal organizations will go out of existence on the 4th of March next, tribal officials will go out of pow er and tribal taxes will cease. These conditions make an early decision as tc statehood desirable. It is urged that no territory ever came to congress with better claims to statehood thaD Oklahoma. The territory has not only population, but wealth, commerce, industry and a high degree of civilization. The ratio of illiteracy Is said tc be less in the newly settled Oklahoma than in that headquarters of culture and educational progress, New England. The statistics show also that the wealth per capita is larger in Oklahoma than in New England. While there are many red men in Oklahoma, the proportion of Indians to whites Is not by any means so large as in Indian Territory itself, and this constitutes the main reason why the majority of the residents of Oklahoma ask for its admission as a state on existing territorial lines instead of its future being linked with that of the adjoining territory.
