SOUTHERN WOMAN PITIES HEARTSORE FINANCIER. Wouldn't Exchange Places for All Her Money and Many Fineries. Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 9. After visiting Hetty Green, of New York, in an effort to negotiate a loan of $50,000, Mrs. Minnie Hogan, a wealthy woman of Atlanta, says she would not i-hange places with the woman millionaire for all her wealth. Mrs. I Toga n wished Mrs. Green to lend $50,000 on $350,000 worth of railway securities. "No," said Mrs. Green, "I will not consider placing any money on outside railroad securities, but if you have something to offer in the way of first class 4 or 4V2 per cent, real estate securities I will be pleased to consider it." Mrs. Hogan says: "Mis. Green then asked me if I was a widow, and when I said 'yes,' she sjnike of the deatli of her husband: She looked nt my dress and remarked: " 'That is a pretty dress; what did it cost you? " 'Why, this dress is one of the satin foulards that was on a special sale jit one of the department stores and 1 think I paid something Uko $10 for it,' T replied. "'We!! she said, 'I thought so: it is pretty and becoming.' "Then we turned to my satchel, which had been given as a, birthday present, I remarked it was too fancy for me; she said it was pretty. Then she said: " 'You know T always have cleaned my dresses with ammonia.' " "I replied: 'Why Mrs. Green, I have done that all my life She turned and looked up at me inquiringly and remarked: " You know if I were not so busy I would take you out to lunch.' "Mrs. Green impressed me as a tired, lieartsore old woman, seeking sympathy, and there I was, a woman with not $100 cash at my command, feel i nig deep sympathy for a woman worth nearly $100,000,000, and I would not exchange places with her for all her millions."

$250,000 FOR KINDNESS. Luzerne, Jan. 0. A Miss Burg, in the canton of Unterwalden, has been notified that she has fallen heir to $250,000, left her by a man to whom she once had done an act of kindness. Miss Burs: was visiting in Ixmdon in 1880, and while she was awaiting at the outer pate of Buckingham palace the arrival of the Queen, she saw a man stricken by sudden illness fall to the ground unconscious. She caused the sick man to be taken to her lodgings near by and did not abandon her charge until the man was in condition to go to his home. The man recently died without heirs and left her all his property.

St. Cloud (Minn.) Executive Tried to
Close Saloons on Sunday. St. Cloud, Minn., Jan. 0. The saloon men of this eity at a secret meeting decided to issue an ultimatum to t lie mayor to leave the city within twenty-four hours, and stay away until his term of otlice expires. Just before January 1, Mayor Ben7.en issued an order that, beginning January 1, all saloons should close their doors nt 11 o'clock at night and remain closed nil day Sunday. This aroused the ire of the saloon men who were supported by many business men Aho were in favor of an open town. At a meeting held three weeks a.uo a committee was 'appointed to mue the mayor to rescind his order. On his refusal to do so, the committee advised him to go to Mexico where he had extensive interests, and attend to his business affairs there. The mayor said to a newspaper man !!'. t l e would undoubtedly : to Mexico.

Consistency may bo a jewel, but there are few youn-jr ladies who would not prefer a diamond. Doubtless the professors know, but there are some bright peopie who cannot understand why tiny run colleges after the football season is over. What we most need to insure the world's happiness is a marriage lottery in which there are no blanks. Some men are cut out for matrimony
and so!ii are cut out by matrimony.
Office hours from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. Examinations free. Nos. 4 and 5 Aldine Building, Main street, near Tenth. Headache Cured. Mrs. Iiyan, wife of Lee Ryan, liveryman on South Tenth street, says: "For vears I had suffered with severe headaches almost constantly. I was told by several specialists that my eyes were the cause of it, so that I finally consented to the wearing of glasses which would help me foi only a short period, when the headaches Avould return again. I was told that nothing more could be
done for me unless I submitted to
having drops put in my eyes to sus-
pesd the accommodation. I was
fearful of the effect, as I knew of
others whose eyes had been perma
nently weakened from the effects of
mydriatic. I consulted Mr. and
Mrs. Lingerfield and Miss Sweuzer, as I noticed in their advertisement that they corrected all latent troubles without the use of a nrydriatic. I am very much pleased with the results, as it is now nearly one year since they fitted me with glasses
and my head has not ached since I have worn them. I am grateful, too, to have found some one who was able to correct my trouble without the use of drops."
Mydriatics. "We do not use Belladonna, Atro
pine or other mydriatics, injurious drugs all of them, and belonging to
a past stage in the science of optics as applied to eyesight testing. Total dilation with a powerful mydriatic will set your eyes at rest. It will set them at rest so well that in a great many eases it will take the eyes a year or more to get back to
their normal conditions, ad veiy
often rest them so wel? that the eyes are never comfortaVe again. By means of modern methods we obtain
more accurate and ss'.'.sfactory results without the us 3 oi drops, also avoiding much of the discomfort and often serious danger to the patient.
Mrs. Commons, wifa of V.. L. Com
mons, proprietor of the Willow drove Dairy, says: "My eyes were
more thoroughly testej by Mr. and
Mrs Lingerfield an 1 Miss Sweitzer
than by any oCiei optician I had
rreviouvslv consulted. The glasses
they furnished me are giving entire satisfaction, and I wear them with
perfect comfort, which I had not
been able to do heretofore.'

CRITICISM Of late the magazines and daily pap-ers ha-e had much to say by way of-eritizism of certain life insurance companies, and especially with regard to the legal organ izationa of such companies, and of the manner of their control. Tbese criticisms do not apply to The Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company of California, but demonstrate the truth of the asertioa that "for policyholders The Pecific Mutual has ihe best legal organization." It is not controlled by 1 or 2 mep having no pecuniary interest or responsibility save as policyholders or recipients of salary, but it is controlled by a Board of fifteen Directors, not mere dummies, but stockholders in their own right, holding a larg amount of the Coropan's stock, and policyholders as welL The Directors of the Company are men of high financial and commercial standing, and are by law made responsible for the acts of the Officers of the Corporation.
