pvOTnia Woaios. y Our sole knowledge of the pco V r pie on other world. and how far
knowledj T!e on other world the people there differ from our Inhabitants, can only be guessed by , comparison with animal nature on this mall sphere of ours. More important to us is a knowledge of ourselves. "Know Thyselb" was an old Greek thought. How to take care of one's own body is not so simple as some think; the human mechanism is a wonderful thing and requires watching. One man who has done more to leach the American people how to care for their bodies than almost any other, Is Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., the Author of the Common Sense Medical Adviser." He ays : It is not the quantity of the food eaten which produces strength and health (for tome people can keep strong on a very meagre diet), but it is how much food is mbsorbed and assimilated by the blood and carried to nourish every organ of the body. It is, therefore, vitally necessary fcr the body that the stomach be in a healthy state. If disease of the stomach, or what is called "stomach trouble," prevents proper nutrition then the heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys do not get proper food they are mot fed on rich red blood, and in consetnce, begin to show signs of distress. Outwardly these signs may be pimples and eruptions on skin, pale face, sleepless nights, tired, languid feelings, or, by reason of the nerves not being fed on pure blood, they become starved, and we receive a warning in the pain we call neuralgia. Rheumatism, too, is a blood disease After J ears or practice ana sway ur. Fierce und that an Alterative Extract, which he named "Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery," made from the extracts of several pluts, invariably produced a tonic effect upon the system. It helped the process of sorption of the healthy elements in the food and increased the red corpuscles of the blood, as well as eliminated the poisons from the system. Business is business. the Gennett. "Vaudeville will continue to be the chief amusement of the American ponple ,so long as he stars of the theatrical .stage continue to forsake dram in its behalf" said a noted American critic. There has never been such a galaxy of stars appear in a city of the size of Richmond as the group that will appear at the Gennett next week. Miss Bonnie Gaylor, the girl from Posey county, who made famous the song, Foolish Liz, will be here througout the week on a return engagement. Miss Gaylor proved to be one of the most popular attractions booked by Manager Swisher during the season and her return will be welcomed by all old friends and she will make many ne wones. One of the numerous other features will be the engagement of the Three - Kudos, who without a doubt are America's greatest roller skate dancers. They will appear in the gymnastic novelty, "The. Frame of Life." Humes and Lewis, the comedy acrobats whose work never fails to drive away the cares and sorrows of an audience, will make their first appearance here. Barington, the famous ventriloquist, will appear with his company of wooden images. This act is said to be one of the most amusing now appearing on the vaudeville stage. The other numbers on the program will be the overture by Prof. Gus. Fredericks, whose piano playing is a feature of every entertainment; the two Rays, introducing singing and wooden shoe dancing; Mr. Ernest Renk in illustrated songs and the moving pictures. "An Interesting Story," "Mother Angel Child," and "Out in the streets" will be depicted by the picture machine. r Burlesque at the Phillips. At the Kew Phillips next Friday night will be. seen an up-to-date entertainment of comedy, sketch and vaudeville novelty. It is said on good authority that "Black Crook, Jr., Co." is a rattling good entertainment, full of tuneful music, songs, dances, pretty girls, handsome cosr turning and brilliant electrical effects, 4f Next "Week at the New Phillips. It is with a considerable degree of pleasure that Manager Murray makes his announcement for next week in vaudeville at th eKew Phillips, for he believes he has secured a bill that will prove highly pleasing. A characteristic of the bill will be that it will be wel banneert throughout, no one number being given more prominence than another except as the merits of the performers may give it a place in the estimation of the audience. The complete program is as follows: Overture Miss Grace Miller, the popular pianist of the house. Eccentric comedy work, singing and dancing by Willig and Lnrkin. Production of phantom phantasiques by Jerome Mora, known -as the peer of tricksters. Illustrated songs sung by Cal Lankert, whose popularity is well known to the Richmond public. Comedy work by F. Dalby Burgess, who also makes a feature of his dog, Finnegan, proclaimed as the original and only talking dog before the public. Up-to-date songs and medleys by Morgan and Crone, tally-ho duo. Feats as hand and head equilibrists by the Aherns. Motion pictures by the Philoscope which will show a very attractive film, entitled, "The Miller's Daughter." Tonight will see the usual big crowd at the final performance for the week. Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that Contain Mercury. as mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when entering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used excent on prescriptions from reputa ble physicians, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good you can possibly derive from them. HalPs Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, contains no mercury, and is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. In buying Hall's Catarrh Cure, be sure you get the genuine. It is taken internally and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J. Cheney & Co. Testimonials free. Sold by druggists. ILLINOIS HEALTH REPORT SHOWS THAT EIRTHS MORE THAN DOUBLE DEATHS.
State Board Tells of Practical Abolition of Basement. "Double Deck and "Treble Deck." Springfield III., Jan. 5. The annual report of the state board of health for the year 1905, was presented to Governor Deneen today by Dr. JVnes. A. Eagan, secretary of the board. According io the department of vital statistics, there have been in the state during the past year about tfo,000 deaths and approximately 150,000 births. Consumption continues to cause more deaths than any other disease, but pneumonia and heart disease stand close in second and third places. Of the 150,000 births the males exceed the females by fully C,000. The inspection and supervision of lodging houses in Chicago, '"Kiel, is carried out by the board with-a coips of inspectors in that city, '.as had the effect of abolishing all basement lodgings, of doing away with, all ""double deck" and "treble deck" bunks and of securing far better sanitary conditions for the patrons of such establishments. "Smallpox Less Prevalent. The prevalence of smallpox daring he last year has not been as geup'nl as in several years past, but the board has continued to use every possible precaution against its spread. Diphtheria, however, has been especially prevalent, and at one time this disease prevailed in more or less epidemic form in 150 cities and villages of the state. During the summer the unusual prevalence of yellow fever in the Soma rendered the establishment of a rigid quarantine over the Inreetible section of Illinois imperative, dnd for three months a large force of medical men were in the quarantin ? sen ice ,vith headquarters' at Caio. The experiences of pst vcars had i':di-;ited that yellow fever could prev.''.! avd spread with great virulence in southern Illinois and the peculiar exposure of that section of the state to the travel of refugees from the South made its complete protection most difficult. During the summer over 8,300 cases of yellow fever occurred in Southern states, Avith over 900 deaths, but no case appeared in southern Illinois. OVER ONE HUNDRED DIE Each Day Sees the Passing of Many Brave Veterans. The rapid rate at which the veterans of the Civil War are answering the final call which musters them out of hte ranks of the living has been noted by Corporal James ' Tanner, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, and he declares that every twenty-four . hours records the death of one hundred and sixty-four of the boys who went out at their country's call and assisted in preserving the integrity of the nation. According to the commander-in-chief there are now less than 200.000 of them left. They are dying like sheep and every year sees the avei-age death rate increasing. At this time the rate is 164 every day; next year A DIFFERENCE IN LUNGS. In the Edinburgh University three humanJungs lie side by side. One is of an Eskimo and is snow white. In life, this would be ruddy with rich blood. Another is that of a coal-miner and is black. The other is of a town dweller and is a dirty slate gray, as are the lungs of most city residents. That's why consumption thrives in cities. rOne reason why Scott's Emulsion does so much to keep down consumption is because it helps to keep the lungs clean and supplies them with rich, red blood. It makes the lungs germ-resisting. If the body is run down and health is at a low ebb Scott's Emulsion will build it up quickly and per1 manently. SCOTT & BOWNE. 409 Peail Street New York.
He he it will be greater, and so on until th last man shall salute and march away into the land of silence. During the year ending June 15, 1905, the number of men who were receiving pensions from the government for their participation in the great Civil War who passed away was 43,855. In relation to pensions, Corporal Tannnr snwl flint tb nrnspnl. fipssinn nf Congress will be asked to amend the pension lav by which every man who served at least three months in the army in ihe Civil War and was honorably discharged, will receive $12 a month instead of $S a month, the sum now paid. It is intended that this increase shall also apply to widows' pensions. FAUST IS filVFK WITHOUT A CHORUS Singers Go on Strike, But the Play; Is Not Given Up by Manager. New York, Jan. 5. "Faust' was sung at the Metropolitan Opera-house Wednesday night without a chorus,' for the Chorus Union struck. The union had demanded that salaries be raised nearly 50 per cent. Director Henrich Conried met th? representatives of the union and told them "that if members of the chorus would come to him as individuals I would use his best efforts to botte their condition, but would refusa t treat with them as members of a la-, bor union. When the usual hour for reporting came, none of the chorus rv.it in :i. appearance. The opening of il-;-opera was delayed until 8:25 o'clock , when the members of ihe ballet were grouped on the stag-e to make tin scene as effective as possible u-uler the circumstances.
