STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE

Thought It Belonged to the House. A f..;'':3 asro a committee of : 3 c? I lie:- Legislature went to . ; rri's Cay to see about allowing TfireTJu'IMlrij; "of a certain bridge not many miles fro mthe town of Bourne. They arrived too late to attend to the duties of that day, so they stopped at the most convenient hotel over night. In the morning while some of the party were making their toilet in the hotel washroom, where the combs and brushes, by the way, were hangjig by strings, one of the committee laid his toothbrush down by the side of the -wash bowl. A certain, other member was using it when the owner discovered him and exclaimed, "Why, John, what the devil are you doing? That's my brush." "Excuse me, Ned, I thought it belonged to t lie house," was the reply. Boston Herald. A Question of Speed. Walter Christie was talking about his huge racing car. "One day in August," he said, "I took a run out into the country, and somehow got lost. On toward dusk I found myself at the meeting point of four cross roads and unable to tell which road would load me back home. "So I pulled up and waited, and soon a boy driving- a cow appeared. " 'My lad'I said, 'I want to get to Cape May.' "The little fellow stared a my 110 horsepower car, and then lie said calmly: " 'Well, just fuller this cow an' ye '11 get thar.'" New York Tribune. Too Much for Olney, When Richard Olney was Secretary of State he frequently gave expression to the opinion that appointees to the consular service should speak the language of the countries to which they were respectively accredited. It is said that when a certain breezy and 'enterprising Western politician who w;w desirous of serving the Cleveland administration in the capacity of Consul at one of the Chinese ports presented his papers to Mr. Olney, the Secretary remarked: "Are you aware, Mr. Blank, that I neS?r recommend to the president the appointment of a Consul unless he speaks the language of thecoun- ' try to, which he desires to go? Now I suppose you don't speak Chinese?" Whereupon the Westerner grinned broadly. "If, Mr. Secretary," said he, "you will ask me a question in Chinese I shall be happy to answer it." ' ""l Ho got the appointment. Philadelphia Record. Torced to Starve. P.. F. Lock, of Concord, K, says: "For 20 years 1 sutTered agonies, with a sore on my. upper lip, so painful, sometimes, that I could not eat. After vainly trying everything else I cured it with Bucklen's Arnica Salve." It's great for burns, cuts and wounds. At A. 0. Lukcn & Co.'s drug store; only 25c. A pood many people who call themselves critics are merely kickers. Give any man who has paid a compliment time enough, and he will qualify It. About the most expensive experience the average man can have is to accept gifts. As a rule, people do not rebuke you for telling gossip until they have heard all the details. When the members of a family quarrel some very clever things are said which no one present applauds or repeats. It Is every wife's opinion that her husband needs her to protect him, and his experience later as a widower goes to prove It. One of those days the man who gets scolded when he complains of his wife's biscuits will drop dead when he hears her apologizing for them to company. Atchison Globe. The Folmon of "Wealth. Great riches, carrying with them enormous possibilities of self indulgence, may fairly be considered as a sort of poison which ruins a certain proportion of those vbo are exposed to It, though strong constitutions survive. As ruin destroys savages, so wealth tends to destroy persons especially young ones, whom use and training have uot gradually made immune to its effects. How that is may readily be noticed in observing the etl'ects of newly won wc.iltU on the families of the winners. It is a rare man and usually one very much blessed in his wife, who can combine with thy ability that wins him iv hr the. sagacity to train children . born in comparative poverty so that they will benefit by a rapid and radical .improvement in his ciicumstancos. Kdward H. Martin in Atlantic. The FIj.1i Net. A curious custom was at one time in vogue at Gloucester, Mass., which Illustrates the sacrediiess which seems to surround a fish net and the protection which the law affords that class of properly. Whenever it became neees-' sary to quarantine h house because of smallpox or other contagious disease the quarantine was effected by stringing nets about the building on the outside. The penalty for disturbing a net was so great that no one dared to meddle, with the barrier. A Unman C'ompnss. Little Jack What did papa mean by saying that he was the captain of this ship? Ma Oh that is only las way of saying that he is the head of the house. Little Jack If pa Is captain, then what are you? Ma Well, I suppose I am the pilot. Little Jack Oh, yes, and then I must be the compass. Ma The compass? Why the compass? Little Jack Why, the captain and pilot are always boxing the compass, you know! The mtler Trnth. "After all, I guess it doesn't cost much to live in New York." "It may not cost much to live," replied the man who had tried it, "but it costs a lot to make peop!e believe you're living." Unxeen Chances, Be not too presumptuously sure in any business, for thing of this world depend on su:'i a train of unseen chances that if it were in man's hands to set the tab!;"? s:i! bo would not be certain to win !':. criticism; , Of late the magazines and daily papers have had much to say by way of critizism of certain life insurance companies, and especially with regard to the legal organizations of such companies, and of the manner of their control. These criti- -cisms do not apply to The Pacific Mutual Life Insurance" Company of California, but demonstrate the truth of the assertioa that "for policyholders The Pacific Mutual has the best legal organization." It is not controlled by 1 or 2 mvn having no pecuniary interest or responsibility save as policyholders or recipients of salary, but i is controlled by a Board of fifteen Directors, not mere dummies, but stockholders in their own right, holding a Iarg -amount of the Compans stock, and policyholders as well. The Directors of the- Company are men of high financial and -commercial standing, and are by law made responsible for the acts of the Officers 'of the Corporation..
