Hartford City, Ind., December 27. While guests at a Christmas dinner the four-year-old child of Oliver Stoner at the home of Henry Kirkpatrick in this city was attacked by a coughing spell, and died in the midst of the Christmas festivities. Henry Wesner, while playing the role of Santa Claus, caught fire from the Christmas tree. Both the tree and Santa Claus were soon in flames. Wesner was badly burned, and may not recover. The house took fire, and all the presents on the tree were destroved. Geologists and Horticulturists Meet. Philadelphia, Pa., Dec 2S. The University of Pennsylvania which has entertained over 1500 prominent scientists and educators this week, was the scene of the opening of two important conventions today. The Society for Horticultural Science began its national meeting here and the sessions will close this evening. The convention of the Geological Society of America, however, will continue for two days. STOCKHOLDERS' MEETING. A meeting of the shareholders in the Second National Bank of Richmond, Ind., will be held at 1 o'clock p. m., at the banking house on Tuesday, January 10th, 1005, for the purpose of electing nine directors to serve the ensuing year, and the transaction of any other business that may come before the meeting. EXAMINATIONS

For Rhodes Scholarship to Be Held January 17 and 18. Blooraington, Ind., December 27. President William Lowe Bryan, of Indiana University and who is chairman of the Rhodes scholarship of Indiana, has received from the li nodes trustees a. statement concerning the next examination for appointments which will be held January 17 and IS. The examinations will be held in each State and Territory to which scholarships are assigned, at centers to be fixed by the local committee of selection. This examination is not competitive, but simply qualifying, and is merely intended to give assurance that every elected scholar is able to pass the first examination which the university demands of all j viiijuiuuies iw iuc i. degree, me Rhodes scholars will be selected from andidates who have successfully passed this examination. One scholar will be chosen for each State and Territory to which the scholarships are assigned. WHITEWATER. Reed Gordon returned Saturday from Clinton county, after a visit with friends. Cunningham will fill his regular appointment at the Christian church Saturday evening, Sunday and Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. William Hiatt and family spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Carman and family at Chester. Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Thomas entertained Mr. and Mrs. Ozro Blose and family Sunday. Jonathan Dugdale and Earl Farmer, of Indianapolis, are spending their vacations with their parents at this place. The Masons had their annual oyster supper Tuesday evening. Charley Reynolds and family, of Hichmond, are spending this week with C. O. Woolman and wife. Edwin Charles and wife took dinner on Christmas with his parents, Wilson Charles and family, near Williamsburg. Charles Showalter and wife and Horace Throckmorton and wife spent Sunday with Charlie's sister, at Hichmond. Rev. Curtis', who has been in ill health for some time, is about the, same. Tom Pierson is better at this writing. Frank Cranor and wife had a Christmas dinner for their family. Dorsey Thurston and wife took Christmas dinner with L. F. Harrison and wife. Howard Harrison has a position with the Railroad Restaurant at Lynn.

CAMBRIDGE CITY. One of the nicest social dances given in this city this season was the dance given by the Dancing Club last night at the K. of P. temple. Some twenty couples were present and among them were several from out of town. The club was organized one year ago and since then has been one of the nicest ever known to this ity. Ray Cornell and Ora Wheeler furnished the music. The wind storm Tuesday did considerable damage to small buildings and fences in different parts of this city. Report came in from the country that rods of fences were blown down. Mitchell in England to Get White. London, Eng., Dec. 28. Charlie Mitchell, the former English champion heavy-weight pugilist, returned here today from the United States, after a stay of several months. He returns to look after tha interests of Jabez White, his fighting protege whom he is anxious to match with "Jimmy" Britt, who ' whipped "Battling" Nelson at San Francisco eight days ago.
