AMUSEMENTS

"Too much snow under foot for amateurs to go paddling through with benefit to their voices" said Manager Frick yesterday to the Palladium. It is only a silly advertising dodge as best with professional companies and to drill a lot of unseasoned men through slush and snow would be ruinous to their voices to say nothing of dangerous colds. We will make it up in the show we give Thursday and Friday nights at the Gennett. vt- w -XAlways Popular. Ever since the first exhibition here Lyman II. Howe's moving pictures have been popular and the patronage has increased on each return visit. This demonstrates the facfl that they always have genuine merit. The entirely new program to be given at the Gennett theatre tonight will include points of interest in foreign lands, as well as up-to-date happenings in our own country. Mr. Howe's exhibitions are always filled with new, humor which serves to keep the audience in a happy mood; then, too, from an educational point the value of the Howe pictures cannot be overestimated. It is truly an entertainment for every member of every family. A Trip to Chinatown." Tonight the New Phillips theatre will offer as its attraction Hovt's most suecesful comedy "A Trip to Chinatown." The late Charles Ilovt occupied an unique place anions American dramatists inasmuch as he never wrote a plav that was a failure. Oilier dramatists have had some great successes and some failures, but every play from the Hoyt pen Avas an instantaneous success and it has been unanimously conceded that his "A Trip to Chinatown" is the best play he ever turned out. Full of brig-lit lines, clever satire, funny situations, catchy music and novel vaudeville features, it is the bright star in the fraee comedy firmament. This season the musical features are said to be all new and a carefully selected company of comedians is promised. Since Leaving Richmond Has Eeen Great Plays Here Next Monday. Richmond always has a warm spot in her heart for her boys who have gone out into ihe Avorld and attained success and tne alorosaid warm spot" Avill be greatly in evidence

next Monday when "Walter Newman arrives in the city with the "Thou Shalt Not Kill Co." Since leaving Richmond Mr. Newman's theatrical experience has been varied and fine, playing "bits" he has advanced along the line until today he is considered one of the best "Leads and heavys" on the American stage. The success attained by Mr. Newman did not come because of extraordinary brilliancy but rather as a reward for good hard study and close application to his art. Being free from affectation or mannerisms his work always stood out good and strong in every character he has played and managers have not been slow to recognize his ability. He will be enthusiastically welcomed on his arrival by a host of warm friends who have ever been interested in his career, and who will be glad of an opportunity to see him in one of his best character creations in "Thou Shalt Not Kill" which will be the only theatrical attraction in the citv Mondav, Decernber 26. During the time he is in the city Mr. Newman will be the guest of his parents, Mr. anil Mrs. Charles Newman of north 10th street.
