We know of only one person in the city that could fill it acceptably. o Stores to Close on Monday. The merchants are circulating a petition to close all stores on the Monday after Christmas. Oliver Harris was before Squire Abbott yesterday on the charge of hunting without permission on the farm of Edward Chandler, four miles north of 'the city. The Aftermath Society was entertained yesterday afternoon by Mrs. F. M. Clark at her home in North Eleventh Street. Roman Architecture was the subject cf the meeting. Mrs. King, in the absence of Mrs. R. L. Sackett, gave an exceptionally fine talk on "Temples, Colosseum, Tombs," and the hostess read an interesting paper on "Aqueducts, Churches, Palaces." He not only had the honor of receiving the first dejrree of this kind aAvarded by the university, but up to that time he was the youngest student in the country to receive such a degree, being only twenty-three years of age. For eight years he has occupied the chair of chemistry in the university. He is also the author of seAeral text books on chemistry. Like Miss Carpenter, he is a golf enthusiast, and both are members of the Evanston Golf Club, Avhere they became acquainted. Mr. Hall belongs to the Skokie Club, of Chicago, and Miss Carpenter to the Westward-He Golf Club of Evanston. Mr. Hall is also an enthusiastic automobilist and huntsman.
