A WIFE'S CONFESSION.
Of course every one knew when they were engaged and every one pretended to be surprised when they heard it was suddenly broken off. tt was first said she had broken it off, then that his heart had changed, ' but finally she con fessed that she had been so irritable, so -depressed and blue that she had fairly driven him away, Her good looks were " vanishing. She was getting thin, pale, and hollow -cheek ed, with dark circles around her eyes, Suddenly all society was pleased again to hear of tne eneaere merit being renew ed, and it was not long before a beautiful and radiant bride was taken to the altar. She had regained her good looks, her former happy disposition and strong nerve all through a secret a friend gave her. A few bottles of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription is what made two more lives happy and a radiant bride more beautiful than she had ever atTeared before. Backed up by over a third of a century of remarkable and uniform cures, a record such as no other remedy for the diseases and weaknesses peculiar to women ever attained, the proprietors and makers of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription now feel fully warranted in onenntr to pay I.soo in legal money of the United States, for any case of Ieucorrhea, Female Weakness, Prolapsus or Palling of Womb which they cannot cure. I doctored for several years: got no better, until about seven months ago I began taking Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription and ' Pleasant Pellets.' I can stand on rav feet and work hard all day. The Armour company hauls cars from Kansas City for 32 cents per mile, $10 for ing, and charges 43 cents a hundred for freight with icing charges of $45 a car from Tennessee and Illinois. All of Tennes see's products are barred from Chicago markets by a prohibitive icing charge of $70 a car, while Georgia points ship twice as much freight in a car with one-half the tariff rate and 25 per cent, less in icing charges. In order to make the charge appear reasonable, the railroads delay the cars two days in transit. Mr. Davies refused to pay a charge of $45 for icing cars from Illinois points and Armour & Co. notified him to re tire from business. He continued to receive shipments, but all railroads having1 contracts with Armour re fused to accept shipments to his firm unless exhorbitant charges were paid in advance. In Michigan they stopped all ship ments. C. A. Bayers, of the Love Fruit Company, testified that Ins firm and other dealers were unable to get cars to ship consignments, while Armour sent agents to buy up the fruits in their territory and shipped them without icing charges to other agents in different paits of the country. On a few eastern lines the icing charges very from $7.50 to $20 a car for longer hauls than those included in the testimony today One firm of local dealers owns 30 cars, but was not permitted to use them on the Pere Marquette line until they agreed to charge Armour rates. Chicago dealers have found Armour & Co. control the egg and poultry markets by the same meth ods. They have sought relief by using boats, but in winter lake traffic closes and in the summer it is inadequate. Witnesses testified that but for the prohibitive charges by Armour & Co. all Southern fruits and vegetabes could be sold in Northern mar kets; that prices of fruit and simiar products would be reduced 50 per cent, in cities, and thousands of car oads of fruit that are now permited to rot on the grounds in the country might" be shipped to the cities and sold to consumers for onethird of the present prices dealers are forced to charge. That the condition shown above is a serious one every thinking person in the United States, no matter whether former or artisan, trade or professional man, rich or poor, must admit. The American Societv of Equity teaches price making and conh'olled marketing, and this is amply sufficient to secure equitable prices to producer and consumer. But transportation necessarily comes between these two classes, and un der the present, management of our transportation systems a few giant corporations, or trusts, could enrich one section and starve another. To hold such powers in check was the purpose of the interstate commerce law, and in some cases, we may say in many cases, it has shown effectiveness, but in others it seems to have failed. The most dangerous powers are almost always the shrewdest, and most likely to find means of evading legal provision. To the congress, the legislature and the courts we must still look for relief from those threatening dangers, and their imminence simply emphasizes the necessity for compact
farm organization and loyal adherence thereto, that the farmers may speak in a united voice to the combined powers of greed, and also to our representative and judicial bodies to whom we look for protection. It is well, perhaps, that the trusts are thus displaying their powers for evil, as nothing will more surely arouse the people, and whatever we may say or fear, the people are still supreme, and there will come a time when their supremacy will be asserted. Well it may be for us all if these great aggregations push not their powers too far.
THE MODERN SANTA CLAUS (The following little poem on . the up-to-date Saint Nicholas has been contributed to the Palladium but the name of the author who wrote the clever littie verse is not known.) In this age of furnaces, stoves and grates, Saint Nick must resort to the mail ; No chimney today will his pack admit, If he tried it he surely would fail. In dire consternation his reindeer would flee On meeting an automobile, So the mail and express his motor must be And he cheerfully works with good will. To set you to guessing is still his delight, Though your stocking he cannot obtain' ' To conceal in its depths, in ihe stillness of night, The package addressed in your name. So if you can whom Santa employed ' This token for you to prepare; His helpers are many and ''mum" is th word. This secret we never, no never, shall share. Beware of Ointments for Catarrh That Contain Mercnhy. Hall's Family Pills are the best, as mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when enterin or it through the mucuous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from Reputable physicians, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good you can possibly derive from them. TT.ill's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, 0., contains no mercury, and is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. In buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you get the genuine. It is taken internally and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J. Cheney & Co. Testimonials free. Sold by Druggists. Price 75c per bottle. f RUSSIANS TO HOLD MEETING. St. Petersburg, Dec. 19.
