POLO NOTES
"We are going to fight the Central League" said Manager Joe Fox of the Marion team Wednesday night after the game, "if a polo war is started it means the death of the game. I would like to fight and so would Mr. Henley but at the meeting Wednesday afternoon we decided not to. As things stand now the four clubs in the Western League have the cream of the polo players and if a war was started we would have everything to loose and nothing to gain. him a half interest in the club. Well after the meeting the Western League had another meeting at the Claypool Hotel and it was there decided not to enter Indianapolis. Why? Supposing I did establish a Western League club in that city. Neccesarily
it would have had to be a strong one and I would have ta draw on the other clubs for my team. I would have taken Bone of Richmond, McGilvary,
Farrell of Muncie, O'Hara and Bannon. Then I would have challenged
the Central League club for a series
of three games. But the result would
have been the end of polo in the
west and besides the other managers
would have been reluctant to give up their star players.
"Now about Wiley. Last year I
paid .$500 for McGilvary and gave Warner to Indianapolis. This season I was forced to give up Nick to Indianapolis because Cohen was roar
ing about having a weak team. I couldn't play Warner at Marion be
cause of some unpleasantness and when Lations at Lafayette offered to
trade Wiley Dawson for him and
also to give me first, claim on the
services of Gavitt I accepted the of
fer. John Wiley was sixth man on my club and too good a player to
play bench. Lafayette regretted the
trade and wanted Wiley back but I
told them that. I would first have to
see if any Western League club needed his services. I telephoned Cohen and he asked my price. I told him
$200 and he turned the offer down. Meanwhile Wiley asked me to release him to Lafayette because he could make better money there than at Ma
rion but I told him he would have to wait. Then the manager of the Lafayette club called me up and said that Cohen had offered them Cogge-

to come to this meeting as a Western
League franchise holder. After he quit, the Central League managers called us up and wanted to know what we would sell our franchise in Indianapolis for and offered not only to buy it but to continue in the Western League with a strong team.

How long are a bunch of men going to work together on that basis f The Western League press is with us and if the public will only stand pat and be satisfied to see the same faces every other week but at the same time see the four best teams that were ever organized, we will be sat-icfied.
DOBUNJU Mrs. Nathan Earl Dies at Her Home ' Thursday. (Special to the Palladium.) Dublin, Dec. 8. Mrs. Nathan Earl of this town died at her home this morning at 10 o'clock at the age of 65 years. She was one of the best known women in this part of the county and her loss is keenly felt by her many friends and admirers. She was the sister of Mrs. A. B. Compton of Richmond.
Chile 'Gives Capital Season's Belle. Washington, Dec. 9. The d'iplol matic corps boasts this winter the most beautiful young woman who has figured in Washington society in several years. This is the Senorita Elisa Walker-Martinez, daughter of the Chilian Minister to the United States. Miss Martinez makes her de but this afternoon when all the social leaders will be present. She is a clever linguist and musician of unusual attainments.

Gliddens Sails For Honolulu. Vancouver, B. C, Dec. 9. Charles J. Gliddens, the Boston millionaire and auto enthusiast, accompanied by his wife and chaffeurs sailed from here today on the Canadian-Australian steamship Moana for Honolulu, on his journey around the world in an automobile. The party expect to arrive at Honolulu the latter part of next week and ten days later they will be at Luva, in the Fiji Islands. On this island they will take a trip of 200 miles, after which a boat will be taken to Auckland, New Zeland, due there some time in January. The New Zealand drive begins at Auckland and terminates at the southern end of the south island at Invercargill. Steamer will be aken to Tasmania, and from Hobantown a drive of 300 miles will be made. From Melbourne the Australian drive of two thousand miles will be started. After this comes the Philippines, China, Japan, the Asiatic archipelago, Ceylon and India, crossing the corner of Asia and- through Europe to London in 1906.
