SCHOOL GIRL IVASJ THIEF SENSATION AT WESTERN FEMALE COLLEGE
HER PARENTS ARE WEALTHY And She Does Not Kjiow Why She Stole Theft Going on for Some Time. Western College, at Oxford, Ohio, the alma mater of Mrs. Calvin S. Brice and so many other prominent women of Ohio and Indiana is the storm center of sensation just at present. For two months past the 320 young lady pupils have been excited over the frequent disappearance of money, jewelry, clothing and other articles of value. Suspicion was at first turneuT upon the help at the institution, but close investigation developed that this theory was unjust, as it was impossible for any of the employes to have perpetrated the thefts. The conclusion was hard to face, but it became positive that the guilty one was a pupil at the institution. Nearly all of the young ladies are daughters of wealthy or well-to-do parents, ever' state in the middle west being represented. It was apparent that the thefts were not committed from necessity. The only plausible explanation was that one of the pupils was a kleptomaniac. Students Under Watch. The faculty accordingly turned their investigation in the direction of the young lady students. Watch was kept upon the girls to determine what opportunity existed for the commission of the thefts. It soon developed that one of the pupils, under one pretext or another, frequently missed her meals. This girl was placed under surveillance. Tuesday morning the mystery surrounding the thefts was cleared away. The young lady was caught red-handed in the cat. Her room was at once searched, and many of the stolen articles found concealed there. Some $75 in cash was turned Tip, and among the stolen property Ave re twenty-seven silver spoons, three corsets, four shirt Avaists and seven skirts. The clothing Avas promptly identified by students Avho had suffered from the mysterious depredations. Made Full Confession. The guilty girl Avas brought before Dr. Lillian W. Johnson, President of the college, and when confronted with the evidence of her peculations broke down and made a full confession. She stated that she had made false excuses to remain away from her meals, and that, while the other girls Ave re downstairs eating, she would ransack 1h :r rooms. She did not need the money or clothing, she admitted, but merely stole from some inexplicable impulse. She had made iio effort to dispose of the clothing, jewelry or money. Her father. who is a wealthy resident cf Elgin, 111., had kept her avcII supplied with both money and clothing. It Avas apparent that she Avas a kleptomaniac.
