AMUSEMENTS 5 r . r'- -. . " As virile and as thoroughly American as was the story of "The Pit" by Frank Norris, is the play made from that book for William A. Brady, in which Wilton Lackaye will appear this evening at the Gennett The atre at the head of a company of three hundred people. The play made a tremendous hit. Thoroughlv American in every detail, a faithful picture of the great wheat market of the west and of social American customs and problems of today, the play makes an appeal, stronger perhaps than the dramatization of any romance that has yet been given to the stage. In the role of Curtis Jadwin, Wilton Lackaye who has appeared with distinction in so many parts has found his greatest and best opportunity. Manager Brady has staged the play magnificently and has surrounded Wilton Lackaye with an extraordinary cast. "The Pit," as Mr. Norris explained in his play of the Trilogy, is the fiction narrative of a "deal" in the Chicago wheat pit. It was his design to illustrate the folly of attempting to corner wheat, and to suggest the immorality of it :, incidentally to show that the passion of speculation may become so absorbing as to alie
nate the love of a devoted woman. In "The Pit" the wife of Curtis Jadwin, the Napoleon of the Board of Trade, who buys and sells millions of bushels of wheat, is not unfaithful to him but she isperilously near the brink of infidelity at times. The play revolves around these two characters Jadwin, the self-reliant, robust, strenuous and daring man of business, whose conscience is deaden ed by his passion for gambling on a gigantic scale; and his wife, Laura, an imaginative, impulsive, and ca pricious young woman, whose in stincts are good but who does not know herself, and is unstable and steadfast, constant and is but femi nine in all her moods and fancies. "Critics of Chicago declare that. "The Pit" is the greatest American play since "The Henrietta." The work of the dramatist, Channing Pol lock has been highly praised as pre serving all the salient points in Frank Norris 's great story and presenting them in such a way as to fully sustain the dramatic illusion. The Edna Young Stock Company will present two splendid plays to Richmond Theatre goers Thursday and Friday nights. " Indiana Folks" will be the attraction on the opening night and "Heart of the Sierras" Friday night. This is the same company that made a favorable impression earlier in the season in "A Little Outcast." The clever children Edna and Robbie Young are still members of the cast and will appear at each performance. The excellence of the play together with the strong company and very low prices insures good business for the New Phillips Thursday and Friday nights. When you want a pleasant purga tive try Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets. They are easy to take and produce no nausea, griping or other disagreeable effect. For sale by A. G.
