AMUSEMENTS
"The Holy City." Announcement of a performance of "The Holy City," interests theatre goers to. an uncommon degree. The great biblical drama and the sumptuous production given it, the strength of the aetiug company, the music and grand spectacle with which the play abounds, furnishes dramatic satisfaction and scenic pleasure so complete and grateful that managers Gordon and Gennett's enterprise is a leading feature in all columns containing theatrical news. Seldom has a play been so immediately noted, because seldom has one play so many points of value. The theatre goers who appreciates entertainment in the proportion given for following thought, will, in the thrillingly told story of the Apostle John find reflection, dramatic study and future enjoyment, rarely combined. The theatre goer who is more pleased with brilliant spectacle and wonderful stage effects, has his wish gratified by lavish preparation and almost unprecedented execution. ) At the Gennett Friday, Nov. 25th. A f Blanche Walsh in "Resurrection." Those, and their number will be limited only by the capacity of the theatre, who are going to see Blanch Walsh in "Resurrection" on Monday evening, may as well be prepared for a few shocks as well as for any number of thrills. The story of the play throws an x-ray light on that phase of the sexual problem which few of the so-called reformers have had the courage to tackle. There are things about which none but Tolstoy is brave enough to tell the truth, and there are phases of character and certain life studies which are never portrayed on the stage with any fidelity except by artists who have both the courage and the genius of a Blanche Walsh. It is said no greater transition has been presented in any play i years than occurs in "Resurrection." From the rural joyful scenes of the prologue and the humor of the jury scene, to the intense tragedy and degradation of the prison episode, the audience is said to experience a mental shock which may be compared only to that which the body receives under a cold shower after leaving the hot room of a Turkish bath. The play will bo presented here with a brilliant company and the entire massive production as seen during its four months run at the Victoria Theatre, New York. "Under Southern Skies." Philadelphia, Pa., "Item" of Oct. 11th says: "Under Southern Skies" was given a revival before a large audience last night, at the Grand Opera House The interesting plot of the play and the beauty of the scenery soon won the hearts of the onlookers and as the curtain fell at the close of each act there was continued applause. "Under Southern Skies" was written by Lottie Blair Parker, the Author of "Way Down East" the two portray life in two extremes of our country, just as their names imply, but arj$, alike in one respect. They will live for years to come and still be appreciated. To come back to the subject of the article, the performance, last night was delightful as an ideal picture of life in the sunny South. Amid the beautiful settings was told the story of the romantic love of a charming young Southern girl. The general excellence of the company was noteworthy." "Under Southern Skies will be seen at the Gennett Theatre this evening, November 23rd. . "The Innocent Maids." The attraction at the New Phillips Theatre Monday, November 23, will be the comedy burlesque organization, "The Innocent Maids," a company that needs no introduction for with every performer a first class artist, and with the lavish expenditure of money in mounting, the production should prove a treat to the patrons of the above theatre. The first part entitled "The ReM Lion" serves to give full scope to the comedians, and introduces twenty handsome young women in the mu sical numbers and ensembles, each selected for beauty of face and form. The olio comprises many star acts including Adams and Drew, Blackford and West, Sadie Clark, Lyst er and Cook and the Kaufman Brothers. The performance terminates writh George Totten Smith's latest laughprovoker called "Hold Pps and Downs," a travesty full of mirth, wit and humor, and gives full oppor- ( tunity to the comedians to display their talenu as first class fun-mak-lers. The Castleton Opera Company. Probably the most auspicious event in local theatricals this season will occur next Saturday when Manager Swisher of the Gennett Theatre will present two jerformanees, The Castleton Ojera Company in a modern version of the mirth provoking "Said Pasha, " and most amusitir of all -oiinC operas. The cast is the most notable that has ever been heard in the principal roles of the music play, and money has been spent with a lavish hand to make this t lte imst t-omplete production in every detail that has ever been given of '"Said Pasha." The east is an all star one, and is composed of Miss Clauvesta Cornish, character contralto; Joseph Smith and J. C. Abdill, tenors; William II. Brown and David John Beverly, baritones; Edward Flavelle, character comedian, and a grand chorus of fifty voices, mostly pretty girls. A pleasing feature of I he production and a decided innovation in operatic attractions in the Norma Porter Ladies' Orchestra of Boston. This is one of the most noted musical organizations in America. The scenic dress and electrical equip ment are complete in every detail. The production is under the direction of E. Drexel Castleton.
DOCTORS ARE SATISFIED Physicians and Specialists Admit the Permanency of Cures by Ascatco. New York, Nov. 23. Whatever doubt, if any, may have existed among the medical profession and the general public as well, regarding the permanency of the cures by ascatco, the new Australian drug, in cases of asthma, catarrh and bronchitis, has been entirely dispelled by the uuusual number of positive cures within the past few months. Monuments to Irish Martyrs. Skibbereeu, Ireland, Nov. 23. Enthusiastic crowds witnessed the unveiling today of the monument to the "Manchester martyrs," in which Jeremiah O 'Donovan Rossa, the Irish patriot, who recently arrived here from America took a leading part.
