AMUSEMENTS
"UnUder Southern Skies. "Under Southern Skies," the most successful play of tho present day hose scene is located in the south, occupies a place by itself in Southern drama. For a long period vy have had Southern plays founded upon one of two subjects. The civil war, or the moonshiner. Lottie Ulair Parker, the author of "Under Southern Skies" has chosen a different theme and it was evidently a welcome change to theatre goers for they have patronized the play so liberally that it is now playing its fourth season, and everywhere to a crowded house. Mrs. Parker's theme in "Under Southern Skies" is a story of love and of suffering. It moves the spectator to sympathy and tears. Uut the setting of the story; the manner in which it is told is what constitutes the delightful charm of the play and takes people to see it over and over again. "Under Southern Skies," notwithstanding the

tenseness and pathos of its theme is as full of entertainment and laughter as many plays whose only aim is to amuse. So deftly are the laughs mingled with tears that an effect of pure nature is produced which is as fascinating as it is unusual in plays. A more than usually large cast is
necessary to pcrtray the characters !
in "I'nder Southern Skies" and each of the "twenty seven people in the drama is especially adapted to his or her part. One of the most attractive features of the production lias never been soon in anv other
play. Manager Swisher who is ever alert to secure the best attractions
for our city, will present "Under Southern Skies" at the Oennett Theatre on Wednesday evening, Nov 23 rd. -X"A Great Feature. One of the most sensational features of the Margaret Neville Company, which appears here at the New Phillips all next week, is The Great Cradoc, The Axe Man. "When he makes his appearance in front of his array of glittering battle axes, he will be greeted with applause by every person in the large assemblage His acts are phenomenal, and original is the only word that can give expression to their character. "With the glittering weapons, ranging in weight from eight to thirty-five pounds each, their crescent shaped double blades flashing in the light, the great danger attendant on the performance lends a fascination to it which holds the audience breathless during its progress, and causes a sight of pleasure and rolief when it is over. The most dangerous performances is the one where he juggles with tho ten pound axes, keeping one hand behind and the other in front of him. The Margaret Neville company opens with "A Woman's Revenge 1 and five big specialties.

"Jerusalem Holy City." By far the best attraction that has appeared at the Citizens so far this year is "The Holy City." which -was produced last night to an audience which filled the house. The play is intensely interesting:. So sironpr in dialogue thai fine must stop to think at all times. The beautiful stage settings were unique, handsome and appropriate. Being a biblical story, adopted to the stage for teaching purposes only, it fills its mission in a grand and effective manner. The cast is strong throughout, and this helps the desire of the playwright. There are not many plavs like "Tho Holy City." It is a picture of the Holy Book with the characters really moving; a panorama of the time of Judea, Gallilee and Jerusalem and the Caesarian empires and such plays should always life for they are as divine as the story they tell. This world needs such lessons and when presented as they are iu "The Holy City" are appreciated and absorbed. The Defiance, (Ohio) Daily Crescent-Xews. September 27. 15)04. - ' At the Oennett Theatre, Friday, November 25th.
Blanche Walsh the most famous dramatic actress of the American stage will make her first appearance in Richmond Monday night, Nov. 2S at the Oennett Theatre, and will be seen as Maslova in "Resurrection" the most successful, drama of serious moment presented in this generation. In arranging the tour of the company which comprises no Jess than forty people, managers Wagenhals and Kemper obligated .themselves to carry the massive production complete which was seen during the four months run of the play at the Vic
toria Theatre, New York. Local j theatre-goers may -congratulate them i selves that this city Avas included in the itinerary. In view of the fact that "Resur
rection is the dramatic sensation of the world's three great capitols, and that it is found upon the most Avidely discussed novel of modern authorship, the subject matter of the play must be more or less familiar to everyone. It is laid in Russia but has no resemblance to the familiar type of play laid in that country. The story of "Resurrection" is that of a woman condemned for a crime and exiled to Siberia but not for having attempted the life of the Czar nor for having plotted against the government. Her downfall was due originally to the lustful passion of a libertine whose conscience Avas not stricken at the time but who lives to see in her degredation the terrible result of the dishonor he brought upon her. The dramatic
contention of the play lies in the man's self imposed task of bringing about her moral resurrection and incidentally his own redemption, the consummation of which is the final
i denoument. The story is one comi i i . i i
mon enougti to every country ami eery race. On he one hand it sIioavs ehe result of a woman's error in a neAv way, an error engendered by the same passion that under different circumstances develops and brings out all that is noblest, best and most sacred in 'womanhood-love. On the other hand it fastens the crime of sensuality on the man equally with the woman, in Avhich respect it deals out numerous uncompromising and searching truths. The action of the play presents a variety of scenes and many contrasted character types which entirely eliminate the atmosphere of gloom but without lessening the dramatic intensity which one would naturally associate with such a plot. Blanche "Walsh is a very youn woman, not yet thirty years of age, and therefore when some of her critics refer to her as the American Duse, they are merely anticipating the esteem which is bound to be accorded her by the public of this country to which her fortunes mav take "her.
