AMUSEMENTS

"A Girl From Dixie." Again Richmond is to have a musical comedy from the prolific pen of Harry B Smith. Its chief chaacteristics are said to be "originality," plausibility and wholesomeness." The underlying theme of tho entire play may be said to be contained in the one word "Dixie' Kitty Calvert, the heroine, belonsrs to that class who will always tell you that they used to rule the land in antebellum days, but "ain't much now." Another character is Squire Mink of amarack bar, buth lejral and otherwise. Reenbojreu, a tlerrnan musician, looms early and often with a most conspicuous thirst. Lord Dunsmore comes to Tamarack and promptly falls in love with Kitty Calvert. Of course there must be in a musical comedy these days, a bevy of some sort of "show frirls," and this feature is not lacking in "A Girl From Dixie." Though they may not be called "show prls" by the management because that term is getting stale now the "sixteen voung women of hauchtv mien and proud carriage" will certainly be re

ferred to as such by the public. The gowns of these same sixteen are said to have cost several mints of money and to out dazzle the sun in brilliancy. Instead of being the work of one man, the musical irmibers are

contributed by several among whom are many of America's representative musicians. Naturally the greatest variety will be afforded music lovers. Among the prominent pcople in the cast are Miss Cert rude Millington, the clever prima donna soprano and D. L. Don, the wellknown comedy, Charles K. French, Clifford Leigh. Thos. J. Keogh, Charles H. Shoffer, Arthur E. Earnest, Julia Brink, Olga May and Helen French. Jr -X- "Xv "Old Arkansaw." Fred Raymond's big scenic comedy drama "Old Arkansaw" will be a special attraction at the Phillips Theatre next Tuesday evening and if merit counts for anything the house will be crowded to the doors. Mr. Raymond has selected a presentin cast of unusual abilitv and the scenic invest tire of the piece is said to be on a lavish scale. Prices 15,

"The Missouri Girl" If press comments are any indication of a first class show, "The Missouri (iii'i" must certainly be a winner. Wherever the play has been produced the press is loud in its praise of .the performance. lvelow are a few extracts from the larie dailies, written by the most pr-'ini-. nent dramatic eiiti-s: "A pleasing performance by a competent company of one of the best written comedies seen this season, was "The Missouri Girl" at the Third Ave-

Girl" made a hi i ami is in 1 ine for a big week.'' (St. Louis Globe-

Democrat.) "It was a clean, whole

some, mirth-provoking comedy which

can never fail to please the crowded houses it i s sure to draw." (Toledo, Ohio, News.) At the Gennett Theatre Monday, November 21st. "M'liss." A play that is known to be clean, wholesome and good with the central character played by a popular actress, a company reported to be especially strong, with an elaborate production, is certainly a strong incentive to the theatergoers. Such a

play and aetress are scheduled for

appearance in this city in the near

future, the play 'being " M'liss,' ' a dramatization of Bret Harte's story of the same name,, and the actress "Jolly" Nellie McIIenry. Miss Mcllenry has been before the public long enough to have them fully apprweciale her vortb, and that theyd0 is evidenced by the fact that she has

probably the largest personal fol

lowing of any actress on the stage at the present time. To see her once

in the delineation of such characters

as this wild flower of the Sierras, is

to realize that there are actresses of

the old school who understand the

art of acting better than many of

the new, for it is authoritatively

stated that Miss McIIenry 's deli

neation of the character of "M'liss ' is a beautiful realization in flesh and blood of the character as conceived

by the author of the famous story,

Miss McHenry will, it is said, be

supported by a very excellent com

pany under the direction of Spencer

and Abort: and "M'liss" is to be

presented at the New Phillips Thea

tre tomorrow night.

"Holy City." A really unique production is that

made bv Cordon & Bennett in " 1 he

Holy City." The piece is a dramitization of the Biblical story of J!m

the Baptist. It is now in its second

season and lias enjoyea use iuo.m xiiarked success wlterevt'r it has been

een. The list f charaet.rs in this vmarkable drama is. at first siiiht. is! : nis!:iuir 'or it includes sacti as

and Mary Madeline.

There is a scene in the "Holy

City, the much talked of Hiblical drama, which is causing a great deal

of discussion wherever the play, ap

pears. It is the vision of the Crucifixion. Most impressive is this

magnificent awc-inspirinr tableau

it is a sisdit that time cannot erase

from the memory. The entire scene

is an exact duplication of the fa

mous painting of Michael Anelo. In

the back ground are the three cross-

es, dark acrainst a sullen sky. ims

portion is painted upon canvas. In the background the watchers and the soldiers in silent awe. From above a shaft of pure white light falls upon the painting of the Savior. "The Dirge of the Crucifixion" is played and 'the whole effect can be summed up in the one-word "grand." Messrs. Gordon and Bennett, tbe producers of that remarkable Biblical drama, "The IIolv Citv" have had many compliments upon the manner in which they haw treated this delicate subject. "The Holy City" is an intense, serious drama which appeals alike to church-goers and theatre-goers. There is nothing offensive to anyone; there is something to interest all. The Biblical story of John the Baptist is followed with little or no variation and to those who are familiar with the Bible it is not necessary to add that there is no more thrilling story.
