AMUSEMENTS

"Old Arkansaw." Miss Cirat-e Hayes who essays the role ot ' ' Sue " in "Old Arkausaw" is a very clever little ladv, endowed with more than her share of good looks. Being a Southern girl the required dialect cumes naturally and as the Arkansas belle she appears at her best advantage. The sweet simplicity with which she portrays the character is admired by all. In the heavier dramatic scenes she surpasses everyone by the forceful manner in which she handles the part, while in the comedy end of her role she is perfection. 4 4 Old Arkansaw" will be seen at the New Phillips Theatre next Tuesday evening. "Dr. Jekyll'and'Mr. Hyde." Agreeing that the public's familiarity with "Dr. Jekyall and Mr. Hyde," because of its many repetitions, has suffered it to be referred to as "old as the hills," it is no small wonder that this same public hesitate to even think of witnessing a presentation of the play. In these days theatre goers generally stop to consult the possibility of their visiting something meritorious. They analyze their chances very carefully The fact that Dr. .Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has been frequently (resented, and that the public is more or less familial' with its theme is a splendid argument in favor of its extreme popularity; but in view of the fact that the play has seldom received a really creditable presentation, is it not remarkable to know that Mr. Elwyn Strong in offering an entirely new scenic production of the great drama, should be meeting with such tremendous success. The players have been engaged with but one idea in view, that being the correct portrayal of the paris. A complete scenic equipment is made another feature of the production. Perfection has been the aim, and though "as old as the hills" even hills may be remodeled and reformed to be as comparatively desirable as "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" now appears. This company is to be at the ftennett Theatre next Tuesday evening.

At the Gennett Plays to Two Large Audiences Yesterday. Yesterday afternoon the Ashland Dramatic comapny put on ""Won and Lost" at the Genne't!, playing to an audience that tilled every seat in the house. The piece is a clever one and it's rendition by the company was acceptable in every way. Between acts clever vaudeville specialties were introduced. Miss Anna Drew, who heads the company, has registered a decided hit with the Richmond theater goers and her support is the best ever seen here in a similar attraction. Last evening hefore another large house "The Light House by the Sea," was presented. It is a thrilling drama and it's presentation was par excellent. The company closes it's five day engagement in this city with two performances, this afternoon and evening.

" The Way to Co "

Only Makes a Matter Worse. Perhaps yon have never tbought of it, but the fact' must be apparent to every one that constipation is caused by a lack of water in the sj-s-tem, and the use of drastic cathartics like the old fashioned pills only makes a bad matter worse. Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets are much more mild and gentle in their effect, and when the proper does is taken their action is so nat
