Tonight the Gennett Theatre will have for its attraction that musical comedy effervescense, ."The Royal Chef" a musical cocktail, that demonstrated its fitness as a public favorite by running six months in Chicago. The cast here, as well as the production is the same that won uns! nted applause during its memorab run in the windy city. The hun . .ous story upon which the plot h.s is that of the adventures of one Heinrich Lemphauser taking advantage of the glorious and glowing prospectus of a Cook's Tour, takes this means of escaping from the arduous labor entailed from a political campaign, wherein he was a candidate for alderman. In his journey he lands on the mythical island of Oolong and is impressed in the service of .ti c ruler cf this island as the , King's chef, notwithstanding his protestations and his appeal; for release on the grounds of his American citizenship. Submitting to what seems to him the inevitable, he commences his labors as the culinary expert of the royal kitchen. Having been served with notice that unless his dishes find favor with the regal palate, lie endeavors to placate the local sovereign with jokes and songs in order to cover up his deficiencies and ignorance of what can be evolved with pots and pans, spices and condiments. It is needless to say that this furnishes no end of humorous situations and laughter, conducive to the best of good humor. The chorus assists materially in promoting risibility and the catchy songs and balads rendered by a cast of unusual merit, will cause the "Royal Chef" to be a musical comedy that will long be remembered. Mr. Sam S. Shubert, who is managing this attraction, has provided a production lavish in its beauty and has costumed the characters in raiment in keeping with the scenic environment. A Musical Comedy. The tendency of amusement lovers for the past two or three years has set in strongly toward musical comedies, entertainments that are light and frothy in the extreme and with little to recommend them save that the auditor had but small need of exercising his thinking powers. There are a few theatrical managers however, who believe, despite the musical comedy craze, that the theatergoers really like something a little stronger. Two of these, Messrs. Spencer and Aborn, have for the past three seasons had out the favorite "M'liss," while a long remove from a comedy has laughter in it to that extent t hat" the somberness usually found in plays of this kind is entirely obliterated and the dramatization of Bret Harte's beautiful story as presented by Nellie Mcllenry and -her admirable company of associates is not only interesting; but amusing. Perhaps this is one of the reasons "M'liss" is so popular with theatergoers, and there is another and a powerful reason "M'liss" is a play which is wholesome and clean. Tt is highly melodramatic, hut the characters are all well drawn from the life, and at this distance, the locale "of the play being California in the early '50s, there is a flavor of romance about it all. "M'liss" is said to have been given a realty beautiful production by the present management and the company, which is headed by Nellie Mcllenry, is reported to be one of the strongest that has ever been seen in the play. sfr ? 3 "Old Arkansaw." "Old Arkansaw," Fred Ray mond's latest comedy boom, has been proucured for an-appearance here Tuesday, November 15, at the New Phillips theater, and this should prove glad news for those who lie clean-cut, original comedy. "Old Arkansaw" has a plot, and a well defined one at that, it carries more scenery than the majority of attractions seen here and has many wonderful mechanical effects, but good natured fun predominates the performance and it is the wonderful fund of comedy that has made it such a lasting success. It is now in its fourth season and the secret of its long lease of life is that it is irresistably and honestly diverting from beginning to end. It is complete with natural comedy and many an oldfashioned homely truth is brought to mind but never without an element of humor new to you. It abounds in sudden situations of absolute hilarity and surprise. If you go to see "Old Arkansaw" you will take no chances on being pleased. Everyone likes "Old Arkansaw."
