AMUSEMENTS

"Old Arkahsaw." Miss Erailie Woodward's portrayal of the "country slob" Mary Slo cum is beyond question one of the most enjoyable features of "Old ArfeuisJrV.'' This is Miss Woodward's third season with the company and it would be impossible to improve upon her work in this difficult role. Her make-up as well as her rendition of the character is all that could be desired. Her specialty creates roars of laughter and encore after encore is a nightly occurrence Miss Woodward has been prominent among the comparatively few firstclass women in this country for several years and her portrayal of this difficult role has put her in the very front rank. Personally Miss Woodward is a very charming' woman and her appearance in this part is another evidence of tlie "art of makeup." "Old Arkansaw" will be seen at the New Phillips Theater November 15th. if. "The Royal Chef." Sam S. Shubert brings to the Gennett Theatre, Tuesday evening, Nov. 8th, for an engagement limited to one performance "The Royal Chef," the musical comedy which endured a run of 20 weeks of unusual business in Chicago. The cast of this organization is one that must perforce be designated as unusually meritorious. The leading' comedian, Dave Lewis

has a role that is the beau ideatSof

comic opera comedians, and'shoud no doubt win as much acclaim as he

did during the Chicago run. His delineation of Henrich Lemphauser,

the Chicago Alderman, circumnavi

gating the gl obe under the auspices

of a Cooks' Tourist Agency, and meeting- with a strange adventure on the mythical .Island of Ooolong-,

where he is impressed into the ser

vices of the King1 as the chief culinary expert in the royal kitchen. This situation has supplied the librettists with three hours of continu

ous hilarity. His efforts to placate

the sovereign by songs and jokes, in

order to cover up his woeful , want of knowledge as to his duties as a

cook, aided by nineteen other fun makers and a beauty chorus of forty

including' such well known artists as Gertrude MeKenzie, the prima don

na of the organization, Stella Tracey Elise Moore, Win. Sellery, Joseph S.

Welsh, Harrv Stevens, Henry. Leone,

Joseph Allen and others, must indeed find favor with the audience.

as it did with the might v ruler of

the mythical island of Ooolong1. The songs are of the catchy sort, and number thirty, and should no doubt be at the end of every whistling' ton-

rue within a couple of days after

their first presentation here. The production is built on lavish lines, and inasmuch as the scenes are all laid on an Oriental island, the scenic artists has been given abundant

scope for his imagination and the opportunities have been taken advantage of, if audiences in other cities

are any criterions, by the Avay they

have expressed their approval of the scenic divestitures. A pretty, little love romance is interwoven by the

meeting' of a lieutenant f the IT." S

Marines, who lands on the island to

enforce a claim of the American Consul, and who meets the daughter

ot Oolong s ruler, the song lie sings to her. "What Color Eyes Do You

Love Best," will be remembered in

Richmond manv, manv davs after the "Royal Chef" has come and 2'one. A startling' noveltv is intro

duced by the chorus, which has been

designated, "The Dance of The Witches." This dance in given to

the accompaniment of a song- entitl

ed "Mother Goose." It is here that

the chorus of "The Koval Chef" has

earned enduring fame, and causes

them to be termed the best working:

chorus in any musical comedy on the

road todav. And it mav be well to

mention here that each and every

one of the forty girls, made their

stage debut with this organization, they having been engaged in Chicago

and are recruits from western states. All are ambitious to rise in the profession they have chosen tor their

life's pursuit, and as a consequence

their work stands out from other

choruses bv their activity and at

tention io business, like an oasis in

a barren desert.

Un account or their slight stature the term "broiler" has been used to apply to them, and it is bv this

designation, the chorus of "The Rov

al Chef" have been characterized wherever seen. Ashland Dramatic Company. The coming of the Ashland Dramatic company to the Gennett Theater next Monday for one week brings in the cast a host of some of the most select artists.
