The Annual Donation For This Institution of Our City. This undenominational and interdenominational institution of our city is doing a work, which must commend itself to every thoughtful citizen. It is wholly a work of love and charity on the part of those who are conducting its affairs, and yet it is a work gladly done for the good of the needy, and the general welfare of our city. The latter thought I wish to emphasize for we want our citizens to realize, if possible, what those think of the work that is being done, who come, from one standpoint at least, most closely in contact with it. I come frequently in contact with our Chief of Police, Mr. Gormon, and he always gpeaks in the highest terms of praise of the work which is being done, and of the assistance which our City Missionary, Mrs. Candler, is giving to tneir work. Recently 1 had a talk with Judge Fox, and the same is true of him. If it were in his power, he would gladly assist the work out of the County Treasury, because he feels convinced that it would be a very profitable 'expenditure. But these men come in contact Avith this Avork only from one standpoint. Their part refers only to the violation of law, and the enforcement of law. We who are engaged in this Avork do not regard this as the greatest part of the Avork. We endeavor to make conditions, such that the law Avill not be violated. The Gospel of Jesus Christ rises above the law. Whilst Ave look after the bodily interests of these people seeing to iti that they are wanned and fed, Ave come to them also with the bread of life. When the people once accept this, they Avill very soon come into a condition -to provide for the bodily bread. The object is to lift the people nearer to Christ. There is also another aim in our work, Avhich must commend itself to our people, especially to business men. That there arc parties constantly going about, imposing themselves upon the charity of our business houses, is only too true. Now, Ave Avould ask the cooperation of our business men in this matter asking thejn to refer all such cases to our city missionary for investigation, and yet you will find that at least one half of those cases f iv frauds. But by doing this Ave Avill find out who ought to receiA-e help and Avho not. We Avould ask the same of our citizens generally. If any one comes around begging from house to house, send them to the headquarters of the Associated Charities, and Ave promise to do Avhat is right. kV7y A lit! I UV.
