Rev. F. C. McCormick preached a very fine sermon Sunday evening especially to young people ' a large number of whom were in his audience. "As a Man Soweth that shall he Also Reap" was both the text and the subject. He plainly showed that not environment nor heredity were the determining factors in character building or in attaining success, but that "sowing" or preparation and purpose were the great things which mould the future both in this life and also that hereafter. Miss Elizabeth Norris sang very sweetlv a solo entitled "The Three Calls. " Hon. James E. Watson will speak here Friday afternoon November 4th.

Doing the Right Thing. The trouble begins with a tickling in the throat and a nagging little cough. Soreness in the chest follows and the patient wonders if he is going to have an all winter cold. Probably, if he does the wrong thing or nothing. Certainly not if he uses Perry Davis' Painkiller, the staunch old remedy that sures a eold in twenty-four hours. There is but one Painkiller, Perrv Davis.

Indianapolis, Ind., November 1. Daniel E. Storms, Secretary of State has submitted a report to Governor Durbiu. covering the transactions in his otlice i'r 5 he last two years. The report is unM-unl in that specific information is regarding the general office business. It shows that the last two years have established a high mark in the transactions in the office. In the years 1901-1902, previously the two1 best, years, the total collections were f 187,17(5.31. The last two years show collections amounting to "f 220,1:1 1.2, an increase of .3S,955.31. This increase Mas more than sufficient to pay for the salaries of the office force, besides the other expenses of the ofliee for the last two years. The fiscal year in the office ended last night, when it was shown that collections for domestic corporations for the last two years amounted to $193,523.00; foreign corporations, $22,403.50; miscellaneous collections, $10,202.52. As the actual expenses of the office for the two years amounted to $27,700, the net profit to the State from the Secretary of State's office is about $200,000. The sale of Supreme and Appellate Court reports brought $17,337.. Deputy Secretary Frank T. GrulVbs, finds that the total number of Indiana corporations formed in. the two years about 2.P50. Of this number 2,273 were geneial corporations, the total capitalization of which is in round numbers $125,000,000. Of this class of corporations about 300 old organizations have increased their capital common stock, or issued preferred stock for the further development of businesses that were being successfully operated and needing more capital for expansion. Seventy-seven new steam or electric railroad corporations have also been organized, of which twentyeight have filed cei-tifieates of increase of capital stock, or have consolidated under the law and paid fees upon tlie capital slock as represented
tin tliiM" latter transactions.
The lotal capital stock of such railroad?, as have been organized and have uh-d noiiees of increase within, the las; two years, is very near $07,000,000. The general and the railroad corporations represent a to
tal capitalization ni' about $192,-
000.000. To these are to be added 313 corporations organized under the laws of some other State or Territory, which have complied with the Indiana foreign corporation law, requiring that certified copies of articles of incorporation be filed in. the office of the Secretary of State. Amendments, reductions of capital stock, changes of name, etc., certifi
cates of which are filed in the office, aggregate possibly another thousand of documents to be added to the list, bringing the total to more than 4,000 record papers filed during the fiscal year. Mr. Grubbs mentions in this connection that every document filed within two years and required to be recorded, is now spread on record in the office, which is a condition without precedent. This was made possible by the action of the last General Assembly in allowing the office an additional recording clerk. The Secretary of State says, in his report, that his predecessor, Union B. Hunt, recommended an appropriation of $2,000 a year for the better enforcement of the foreign corporation law, and predicted that every dollar so appropriated by the State would return five dollars to the State Treasury. Mr. Storms states that he believes this would undoubtedly be the case, and he makes the request that such an appropriation be made.
