CAME WITH SUDDENNESS AND STRENGTH ASTONISHING
It is just a common cold, people say, 1 Litre's no danger in that. Admitting their tlateinent, then there are uncommon colds, tclds which are dangerous; for many a fatal sickness begins with a cold. If we could tell the common cold from the unc cmmon we could feel quite safe. But we tfcn't. The uncommon variety is rarely atxojpiized until it has fastened its hold on iht lungs, and there are symptoms of coaromplion. m At the first symptoms the careful person will heed the warning: by taking a mild laxative ; some vegetable pill that will not disturb the system or cause griping. About tbebest is "Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets." If the cold starts with a cough, and it jrsists then fome local treatment for this c ondition should be taken. A well known fallerative extract, which has been highly it commended by thousands of users, is In. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. This tonic compound is composed of an extract of root and herbs and has a soothing effect upon the mucous membrane, fcllays the irritation and at the same time veiks in the proper and reasonable way, bl the seat of the trouble the stagnated or poisoned blood. It contains no alcohol to shrivel up the Yiltod corpuscles, but makes pure rich red blood. Dr. Pierce's iooo-page illustrated book, "The Common Sense Medical Adviser," is ftnt free in paper covers on receipt of 21 ore-cent stamps to pay cost of mailing only. Fir 31 stamps the cloth-bound volume will ie f-ent. 1008 pages. It was formerly sold Hi ii.50 per copy. Address Dr. R. V. Jacrce, Buffalo, N. Y,

New York, October 22. A marked revival of the speculative spirit lias set in. It has come with a suddenness and a strength that is almost astonishing. Such an outburst, exceeding the most sanguine expectations, is only to be explained by the fact that intrinsic conditions Avere generally as the banishment of all doubt regarding the crops, was necessary for the release of pent-up forces which sent prices surging upwards during the first part- of the present week. Again and again these weekly advices have asserted that confidnee was reviving; that conditions were improving; that powerful interests were supporting the market, and that in consequence betfer prices were to be expected. Recent events have strikingly proved the correctness of such views. The recovery, however, came with a rush that would raise serious
doubts about its stability were it not
for the genuine and widespread im
provement in underlying conditions
that, fully warranted the change. A
somewhat tardy realization of this change by the public caused the latter to enter the market impulsively
in order to recover lost oirporimny;
and, as is always the case; the pub
lic is rapirly becoming as mrreli over-.-angnine as it was over-depresfwdl Jess than six mouths ago. Such a. fharp revulsion of feeling is- uorrmT to be reflected in values, and" it may be some time before th market recovers its equilibrium and' sentiment: again and adjusts itself accurately to the general situation. Now that: the speculative fever has fairly broken out if must run its course until
broken by revei-ses, although it mvrsf; be admitted that no natural' hind
rances are yet in sight. ThV orrfsuTe
situation continues gl. and is improving daily, while the technical situation remains fret of weakness. The only checks thus far axTmirritered have come from big: insiders, who evidently are opposed to runaway market. This was. rasT quite evi
dent by the recent pubb utterance? j of Mr. Vanderlip, who undoubtedly expressed the opinions of the motet powerful banking and- financial Interests of the country in his, St. Louis speech. Mr. Yxrr.derlip plannly-
intimated that those interests .vere
opposed to an ovewrapid discfmnr-
ing by Wall Street ot better mtsfness conditions. TDe frankly stated
that in some cases such improvement
had been ovwdiscounted, and gave warning that steps would be taken by big financiers, to check the- sort of speculative operations; thai
WHY MOTHERS WORRY Did you ever hear a mother worry over a plump child ? There is no better bank of health for a child to draw from than a good supply of healthy flesh. Scott's Emulsion not only gives a child weight and plumpness, but it feeds the brain, bones and nerves with strength and active power. Fewer mothers would worry if they knew more about Scott's Emulsion. Scott's Emulsion is substituted by cheap emulsions and so-called wines, cordials and extracts of cod-liver oil. They can do you no good and are dear at any price. Why buy them ? Scott's Emulsion has been the one reliable preparation of codliver oil for nearly thirty years. We'll send you a sample free upon ntquest. SCOIT BOWX,4l'urI Street, S-am Vwk.

afford to permit any serious decline, and would probably encourage a bult market within reasonable limits. On their side- is the continued improvement in business, also ease in the
money market. Railroad managers, who are in an advantageous position for looking ahead, are confidently ex
pecting a. heavy traffic this fall and winter; so confidant, in, fact, that they are pressing for deliveries of
new cars and placing additional orders for others in order to be ready for the expected: revival. , Within a short peroid our railroads' have placed orders for 20,000 new freight cars-
