BUSIEST MAN
Uncle Sam's Work, as Illustrated in the Government Building, Is a Revelation to Most People. St. Louis. "October 12. It 's a far cry from a ' breech-loading disappearing gun that throws, a shell eighteen miles to the Hessian fly and the hopplant louse, but it's an easy jump for Uncle Sam. "Which is another way of saying that the activities of the United States Government, as illus trated in the Government building, take a wide range from the building of the national defences to a Avar of extermination on the insects that des troy plant life. It is this wonderful exhibit, in the installation of which the Government has spared no expense and which is upon a larger scale than any exhibit exer made by the Government, which has suggested the idea of a great ex position of our national progress in art, industry and education, to be given by the national Government every ten years, asuggestion that has been w i del y c ora i n e n d e d . The reason the Government building is the center of interest and attracts so many thousands of visiters every day is because the activities represented are outside the range of the common knowledge of the people They are more or less familiar with the processes and industries illustrated in other exhibit palaces but here they find strange and unusual sights invested with more or less of the mystery of science all representing the work of the Government for the people. The popular notion of Uncle Sam is that of a good-natured sort of a loafer ,always ready to fight, and whose only peaceful employment is that of carrying the mails. After spending a few days in the Government building they are gradually reliever of this notion. They find Uncle Sam to be about the busiest individual on earth. Of course he is ready to fight. That is shown by the models of battleships and the great guns, one of which throws a 1000 pound projectile 18 miles and costs $G00 every time it tosses this "peace maker" at a enemy. But this represents such a small part of his activities. In this building is shown the work of Uncle Sam in exterminating the hundreds of insects and worms that destroy crops and plant life the Hessian fly, the chinch bug, the cotton ball weevil, the San Jose scale, the coddling-moth, also the work of the experiment stations and of the bureau of plant industry, show ing how Zante eurrnts from Greece, truffles fro France, dates from Algeria, figs from the Meditteranean, almonds from Spain, Mangoes from India, citron from Corisica, sisal from Yucatan, jute from China and thousands of other plants and seeds niay be grown in this country. Here Uncle Sam shows how he measures the velocity of t lie wind and the amount of rainfall and sunshine by delicate and ingenious electrical instruments which work automatically; how he warns sailors of coming storms and keep marines from wrecking their vessels upon rocks and reefs; how he dr?dges out rivers and promotes navigation; how he promotes and assists the culture of the best food fishes, how he looks after the great national park reservations and protects t!ie forests; how he keeps out yellow fever and other scourage that devastates other countries. More interesting than all these, judged by the great crowds that surge about them, are the, exhibits showing the process of coining money out of silver and copper, and the development of the TJnited States mail service through its various stages from the old mail coach to "the flight of the fast mail." Many Mothers of a Like Opinion. Mrs. Pilmer, of Cordova, Iowa, says: "One of my children was subject to croup of a severe type, and the giving of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy promptly, always brought relief. Many mothers in this neighborhood think the same as I do about this remedy and want no other kind for their children." For sale by A. G. Luken & Co., and W. H. Sudhoff, corner fifth and Main streets. "To Die at Dawn." "To Die At Dawn"-which is the attraction at the Gennett Theatre next Friday evening is a Melo Drama
of thrilling heart intprfxt .lonHtinir life in .the hills of Old Kentucky the scenes are laid in ami about Hodgensville, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. The story tells of a family feud between a beautiful daughuM- and an unnatural father who assisted by a rake of a nephew, endeavors to rob the girl of her just rights. The daughter in turn, sets up a war on her own account, and after many hair breadth escapes, enjoys the complete downfall of her enemies. Among other thriling scenes is the Old Mill with its working into which the heroine is thrown, in the hope that she may be mangled to death, only to see her sudtlenly seize the fast revolving wheel and raise to safety in the arms of her faithful lover who is on the top of the Mill to receive her. The scene is erhaps the most realistic piece of stage machinery ever placed upon the stage. Another thrilling and most realistic scene is the escaje of the heroine from the Stalactite Chamber in the Mammoth Cave, on the back of a trained thoroughbred horse. Altogether there is not a dull moment in the play. The characters are cleverly drawn and the comedy is rich and wholesome. There are specialties to please the people. The cast is headed by Miss Cresey, a handsome and capable actress who is fast coming to the front in theatricals She is supported 'by an excellent company of players which includes E. Lawrence Iee, the author, in the part of George Drake, a scheming and polished villian, Miss Cresey in "To Die at Dawn" is the attraction at the Gennett Theatre next Friday evening. FOUNTAIN CITY.
