Chicago, October 10. Is the church the cre.it monitor of law and
custom, and will it put the ban on the divorce evil that the Kock River conference, now in session, claims is wrecking the home life of America? The pastors and heads of universities are trying to solve the problem, and now that the great Methodist conference U actively taking up the
subject, little else is being discussed by leaders of every denomination. Prof. Charles Richmond Henderson who holds the chair of sociology at the University of Chicago, is radical
ly expressing himself against the increasing number of divorces, and says that the customs of love and marriage are responsible for the evil, which, he holds, began with the training of present divorcees and that if divorcees are to be stopped different methods of training must bo adopted. He says that the great evils of modern society are: Falling in love. Divorce. Nagging. Lack of thought. He mentions the church as one of the remedies for these evils and the home as the other. Falling in Love Immoral. "Falling in love is immoral and vicious," said Dr. Henderson, "and should rigidly be guarded against. Love in sex is an emotion to be controlled, the same as any other , great
emotion, such as anger or grief. Love
can be cultivated or repelled at will.
The young man or woman who allows
himself or herself to 'fall in love
without due thought and investigation is acting unwisely and in many instances sowing the seed of divorce.
person should first learn the
character, the family and the habits
of the person they desire to love before submitting to the emotion vul-
arly called 'love.' After being as
sured of the worthiness of the emo
tion, love and marriage should then
be allowed to take their course.
"Love and marriage should be j
placed on a civil basis.
'A couide should know each other i
for years before marriage is spoken of."
But publicity should be given to
the acquaintance. Then when an en
gagement exists it should be a matter of law that a enrd should be sent
broadcast to all friends and to the public press:
Would Give Publicity. "This method avo ihl cive the neces
sary publicity to tnoir love and approaching marriage, and if there were any reason why either one should not marry the other, it would inevitably be found out.
"The engagement should also be an nounced from the pulpit and posted as a placard in the church. After this is done a few months should elapse before the marriage takes place. "No one should ever marry for

Go after it with Athlophoros. All forms of Rheumatism owe their origin to the presence of Uric acid in the blood. The mischief may show itself in any or several of the following shapes: Acute, Chronic, Inflammatory, Muscular or Rheumatic Fever. Severe attacks may be brought on by exposure, errors in diet, or neglect of -the laws of health. But aU result from an excess of Uric acid in the system! Uric acid will only yield to one remedy. This remedy acts directly on the cause of the disease. A remedy that dissolves the Uric acid. Athlophoros cleanses the system, purifies the blood, relieves inflammation and permanently cures even the most stuliborn cases. An interesting booklet. think and in stopping to think would realize that without the sanction of the church they would lose social prestige. "There are cases, of course, where in all justice divorces should be granted and sanctioned by the church. But these cases are the exception. Move often women should be given property rights which are under the heads in law of 'seperate maintenance. ' "But with thought and custom and church combined I think the divorce evil would be stopped and marriage and love and home placed on a more sacred and happy basis."

Cause of Lockjaw.
Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused by a
bacillus or germ which exists plentifully in street dirt. It is inactive so long as exposed to the air, but when carried beneath the skin as in thee wounds caused by percussion caps or by rusty nails, and when the air is excluded the germ is roused to activity and produces the most virulent poison known. These germs may be destroyed and all danger of lockjaw avoided by applying Chamberlain's Pain Balm freely as soon as the injury is received. Pain Balm is an antiseptic and causes such injuries to heal without maturation and in one-third the time required by the usual treatment. It is for sale by A. G. Luken & Co., and W. H.
