SCRAPS. For the first time since l.cGG men other than ex-men-of-warsmen are bting recruited for the London fire department. AVales wants a capital, but though the search has been 'oing on for years, no city has yet been found pre-eminently suited for the honor. The largest coll odium known is in Beavertown, Pa. Some of the leaves are four and one-half feet long and forty inches wide, while the circumference of the stalk is forty-nine feet. The British government committee on physical deterioration recommends
a law requiring every dwelling or portion of a dwelling occupied by a single family to have a grate suita
ble for cooking. Governor Ferguson, of Oklahoma, has been immortalized by an epigram Some envious editor in that territorv, stvles the executive of the Territory the "red-headed Socrates of the North Canadian." In London the stairway and eleva-toi-s used for access to or from the stations of the underground railroads do not occupy any part of the streets. The railway companies had to buy space in a block where they wanted a station. Alfred Vernon, at Leytonstone, England, sang at a club the other night a song entitled, "I "Wonder Where and What the End Will Be?" It is a story of a gambler's life, and Vernon had to place a revolver near his head, pretending to commit suicide. The revolver was accidentally fired and inflicted a fatal wound. It takes three an done-third times as long to write the Roman numerals, from one to one hundred, as the Arabic, and the chance of error is twenty-one times as great. It takes three times as long to read the Roman numerals from one to one hundred as the Arabic, and the chance of error is eight times as great. Science. With every year it becomes more and more certain that by the year 2000 no ecclesiastical organization now existing in America will retain its present form. This statement was
made as early as the year 1870, bv

According to an official return just issued, the grand total of motor cars and cycles registered in the United Kingdom on April 1, was 31,421. In England and Wales there were 14,771 motor cycles and 13,302 motor cars; in Scotland, S6G of the former and 1,903 of the latter; while in Ireland the numbers were S97 and 54S, respectively. The number of licenses granted to drivers was 40.500. London Engineer. " Lewiaton (Me.) Journal. There is a cab horse which can be seen on one of the "stands'" along Broadway which has breathed for years through a false windpipe. The animal had the heaves and not only made as much noise as a locomotive, but his speed was reduced nearly half because of this difficulty. A veterinarian inserted a tube and the horse breathes as well as ever. The only part of the apparatus which is visible is a small metal disk through
which the air enters. An English- tourist was being driven on a jaunting car through the Donegal Highlands, and after a tim the result of his observations came to the surface in the following query: "Driver! I notice that when you speak to your friends whom you meet on the road you invariably do so in Irish, but when you address your horses you do so in English. How is this?" To which came the retort: "Musha, now thin. Isn't English good enough for him?" The Spectator.
It is seldom that a hurricane and thunderstorm brings in its train a del uge of game birds. This singular spectacle, however, was witnessed in the Tarbes district recently. The storm broke over, the district in the evening, and when the gale was at its height, about 10 o'clock, large flocks of quail, which must have been
migrating at an invisible bight, were beaten to the groud, the plain around
the city being thickly strewn with their bodies. In the grounds of the
Hotel de Paris, the birds weie picked up in dozens. London Globe. Almost beyond belief is the story which comes from England of a trick the Avind played not long ago on the spire of a Presbyterian church. It blew the steeple above the belfry 25 degrees out of plum, so that' the spire pointed in a northwesterly direction and it Avas feared that it would fall. When the next morning men were engaged in straightening it
the Avind veered around and bleAV it back to its original position. Of course, it Avas necessary for the men to strengthen it and its supports, but the Avind's freak made their Avork much easier. Egypt puts in a claim to possess the oldest person in the world, one Ahmed Selim, Aho has just turned

Old Arabs remember him as an old man when they were boj-s and have no difficulty in believing that he is as aged as he says he is. In this country, the general method is to run a locomotive for a limited number of years, and then to relegate it to thescrap heap in favor of a more modern type of engine. On the other side, however, the practice is to retain a locomotive in service as long as it Avill run, irrespective of the developments and improvements that may be incorporated in the progress of time. The result is that upon the English railroad may be seen engines still in hard use which Ave should consider long past their term of serA'iee. Yet no English engine has attained the unique distinction achieATed by the locomotiAe No. 955, "Charles Dickens," upon the London & NortliAvestern railway, which has covered close upon 2,100,000 miles in haulage of express trains since 1S82.
