RESULTS
Of Loree's Resignation Are Being Watched. The resignation of L. F. L roe, who was the highest salaried railroad president-in the world, is still the. topic of jreneral interest and the results to follow are to be watched closely. Within less than one year after the signing of the contract he was practically forced to retirement by the charge that he had disorganized the road, instead of organizing1 it. He was told that his methods were in disfavor and not calculated to bring about desired results. The annual reort of the Rock Island disclosed a decrease in net earnings far greater than any other western system and the Moore brothers and their associates began an investigation to discover the reason. They are said to have found conditions highly displeasing. Mr. Loree's first movement was to fill many operating positions with Pennsylvania men. The organization of the Rock Island was completely changed from a department to a divisional system such as prevails on the Pennsylvania. The final -clash between the two heads of the Rock Island is said to have taken place when Mr. Loree came to the decision that a third vice president must be named to take charge of the entire traffic. Mr. Loree insisted on having an eastern man for the place, Avhile Mr. "Winch tell held mt for a western man. A railroad official who was in Chi cago yesterday, states that there is considerable excitement among the officials at the heads of the various departments for fear that there will be a general reorganization, and many of the number will lose their positions which they have held but a few months. SCRAPS. Louisville is the largest glass bottle market in the country. A Poughkeepsie man has been carrying the same pocketknife for more than forty-five years and it is still in (5WU VUtiUillVU A barrel with a capacity of 43,S00 gallons has just been completed for a great wine firm at Schlitenheim, on the Rhine. A banquet was given in its interior to twenty-four people. At a cost of twenty-five cents Jajanese doctors can dress the wounnds of 500 men. They use a finely powdered charcoal obtained by the slow combustion of straw in closed furnaces. Sachets filled with it are applied to the ewounds, and its antiseptic and absorbant qualities genei'ally effect a rapid cure. "Man Avill eat two hundred or three hundred more foods in the year 2000 than he eats now," said a chemist. "A movement is on foot among the world's governme'ifs to increase the varieties of onr u,ls, and every week from somewh re or t ther a new vegetable or fruit n: is added to the international bill t' i'-ire." The biggest carvii:-r knife ever manufactured may be seen at the World's Fair. This monster blade is thirty feet in length and has an edge as sharp as a razor. It is made out of the finest steel and the handle is a masterpiece of the cutler's art, elaborately carved and beautifully polished. It would take a veritable giaut to wield a knife like this. The shark, which is so abundant in the waters of Central America, is to be utilized in commercial products. A company has been formed which converts sharks' fins into jelly and tinned soou, makes fine machinerj oil from their livers, handsome leather, equal to alligator's, from their skins, walking sticks from their backbones, and numerous articles from their jaw bones and teeth. Only 1400o,272 acres, or 1..7 per cent of the whole area of Japan exclusive of Formosa, consists of arable land, and 5C per cent, of the agricultural families cultivate less than two acres or more up to one audn onehalf cho. or a little less than three and three-quarter acres, leaving 15 per cent, of the farmers who cultivate farms of three and three-quarter acres or more London Engineer. At Bagdad there has been a golf club for nearly ten years. The eigh-teen-hole course.' which is laid out in the desert some three miles from the city, is said to be of "a decidedly sport imr character" which means according to some, that one loses an immoderate number of balls there. Golf may be played at Zanzibar. Benin, ("the city of blood," it will be remembered), Crete, Bangkok, Hono
lulu, Perak and also at Wei-Hai-Wei. London Times. An Italian named Luciano Butti has perfected a hotographic apparatus capable of registering the iucredi" ble number of 2.000 pohtographie impressions per second. The most minute and least rapid and casual movements of birds and insects on the wing, whic-h have hitherto defied science, can. it is claimed, be registered with accuracy, thus opening a new wond of natural obsoi-aiion to ornithologists. The films used cost $ pound a second for the 2,000 impressions. A trial was recently made in Austria to decide how short a space of time living trees could be converted into newspapersh. At Eisenthal at thirty-five minutes after 7 in the morning three trees were sawn down; at thirty-four minutes after 0 the wood, having been striped of bark, cut up and converted in pulp, became paper, and passed from the factory to the press, whence the first printed and folded copy was issued at 10 o'clock, so that in 145 minutes the trees had become newspapers. Ancient timekeeping has received new light from two remarkable stones lately unearthed by the (Ionian explorer on the site of the old Ionic port, of Miletus. These stones are the remains of calendars, of which one is shown to date from 101) A. I). The year was divided into twelve zodiacal signs, and against each month the motion of the remaining signs was given, with a note predicting the weather. On the left side were thirty holes, a wooden peg being moved forward one hole each day, thus giving
the astronomical date. The museum of Baxlor University at Waco, Tex., has recently received as a gift from the Rev. Z. C. Taylor Bahia, Brazil, the complete skull, the blade bones, several vertebrae, and three ribs of an immensespecimen of the common fin whale or rorqual, captured in the South Atlantic. The length of the skull is 15V- feet, Avidth acoss top S feet, high from the ground 5 feet, length of ribs (5 feet 4 inches, length of bladebone 5 feet 4 inches, width 4 feet. Weight of skull 2,tS84 ounds; of each of the lower jaws bones 545, of the bladeboues, S5 lbs. John (Tay, the father of Henry Clay, the distinguished statesman, was not only a Baptist, but a Baptist preacher. He resided most of his life in what is known as; "the slashhes" of Hanover, and his farm, on which he lived for many years, is two or three miles from Ashland. Here his son Henry was born, and probably Porter Clay, who removed to Kentucky and became a distinguished Baptist minister. Robert B. Semple, in his "History of Yirgna Baptists," says that the Black Creek Baptist church, in Hanover county, was originated by John Clay, and that he was pastor of. Chiekahominy church, and did much missionary work in the region around. The serioussness of the fire in January last at the Turin library is fuully revealed in a recent report. In addition to four fourteenth century manuscripts of the "Roman de la Rose" the "Discours de Bessarion," the manuscript of the "Chevalier Errant," and the famous Turin "Book of Hours," the fire reduced to cinders 5,520 volumes of philology and allied subjects, 4,147 volumes of law works, 2V7G0 of political economy, 1,074 of bibliography, 5S00 of philosophy, 4,030 of "polygraphie," 2,343 'of literary history, and 2.247 periodicals. To replace as far as possible this serious loss, the Italian Bibliographical Society is making an appeal to the generosity of book lovers and collectors in all parts of the world. - Germany possesses a miniature but most useful railway, to which no parallel is found in this country. Its peculiarity is that its trains have no drivers. It is nsed for carrying salt from the salt mines at Stassfurt. The trains consist of thirty tracks, each carrying half a ten of salt. The enginfs are electric, of twentyfour hourepower each. As it approaches a station, of Avhich there are five along the line, the train automatically rings a bell and the station attendants turns a switch to receive it. He is able to stop it at any moment. To start it again he stands on the locomotive, switches the current and then descends again before the engine has gained speed. Many Mothers of a Like Opinion. Mrs. Pilmer, of Cordova, Iowa, says: "One of my children was subject to croup of a severe type, and the giving of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy promptly, always brought relief. Many mothers in this neighborhood think the same as I do about this remedy and want no other Jkind for their children." For sale by A. G. Luken & Co., and W. H.
