ARE BETTING ON ELECTION

REPUBLICANS EXPECT TO CARRY INDIANA BY 15,000. WILL BE BADLY FOOLED Say the Democrats When the Election ! Returns Are Counted. Indianapolis, Tncl., Octher 2. The betting on the result of the election in Indiana opened Saturday with even money offered that the Republicans will carry the state by a plurality of 10,000. At one board three bets of $100 on that plurality were posted and there were no takers. At another betting board $100 to $200 was offered Saturday that the Republican plurality will he 15,000. and $100 to $300 that itwill be 25,000" Some of the Republican leaders are claiming the state by 30,000 and upward to 40,000, but they are not betting their money that way. Local Democrats who closely followed the trend of betting here in the last three or four campaigns say the odds offered on the Republican ticket are not as large as might be expected, in view of the result in 1900 and 1902 and the recent claims of the party leaders of a sure thing. The fact that the odds are not large is regarded by them as an indication that the men who make election betting a business do not take much sto-ck in the extravagant claims of some of the Republicans. Democratic leaders said the betting does not indicate which way the campaign is drifting, and they recalled that in 1S92 the Republicans were so eager to get their money down on President Harrison that they offered 3 to 1. It is said by the Democrats that the odds will probably continue favorable to the Republican ticket, but they said that the Republicans may be more badly fooled than they were in the last Harrison campaign. Cause of Lockjaw. Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused by a bacillus or germ which exists plentifully in street dirt.
