GAP AND GOWN MOOTED QUESTION

WITH EARLHAM SENIORS AT PRESENT TIME.

WHAT COACH BREWER SAYS

About Condition of the Foot Ball Team Meet at Lafayette Today.

The grave ' and studious Earlham Seniors at the present time are discussing calmly and -without any signs of heat, tlie question that caused such a rumpus among their predecessors last year, "Shall we or shall we not wear the cap ami gown?" A member of the class predicts that before the question reaches a final settlement the atmosphere in the vicinity of Earlham will be crowded with fur. figuratively speaking. This same stmlent savs the majori

ty of the class favor the cap and gown, "but" said he, "the girls constitute the majority of the Senior class and as all the girls look good in that make up, they leave us fellows to swallow a pill. that is not to our taste." The senior after delivering himself of this took a careful survey of himself and then remarked in a disgusied tone of voice "Say

wouldn't I look swell in a cap and gown 1 " Yesterday afternoon the Earlham football eleven indulged in its last practice on Reid field before the hardest game the Qnarkers 'schedule calls for, the contest with the Purdue University team at Lafayette which takes place this afternoon. The practice was light as Coach Brewer did not care to run the risk of tireing them out or crippling them

up as their inferiority of weight is

enough of a handicap as it is, without sending the wearers of the Quaker colors on the field "a bunch" of inva

lids" as Brewer puts it. In speaking of Earlham 's prospects yesterday afternoon Brewer said. "The boys are in first class shape, though a few of them have acted a little stale because of the hot weather, but tomorrow I expect to see them make nearly as good a showing against the Boiler Makers as Beloit did the other day. Of course we will be defeated, that is a foregone conclusion, but I will predict that Purdue does not run up more than 18 points on my men." The team left this morning for Lafavette at 5:05 o'clock. The team will line up this afternoon as follows: Center Sauyenbaeher. Right Guard Bond. Left Guard Smeltzer. Right Tackle Brunson. Left Tackle Wann. Right End McCreary. Left End Lawrence. Quarter Back Wilson. Full Back Grimes.

Riirht Half Back Hobbs. (Capt.) Ie'ft Half Back Reeve. Subs Lear, Haisley, Ellis and New in. Allen was elected manager of the second team yesterday and he will arrange a schedule for the team with elevens in this part of the state.

Merchants' Association and Commercial Club. The Merchants' Association has at last been able to secure quarters which are adapted to its needs. The members of the Association have rented the rooms on the second floor of

the Masonic Temple which were for

merly occupied by the offices of the

C, C. & L. Railway. The rooms will be fixed up in a very comfortable

style for the pleasure of the members. The Commercial Club will share the new rooms with the members of the Merchants' Association and they have moved their belongings into the looms. This was a surprise to a number of the members of the club who did not know that the move was

contemplated.

GENERAL WEAVER

Speaks in the Cause of Alton B. Parker to a Fair-sized Audience. A fair-sized audience greeted General Weaver at the New Phillips opera house last night. General Weaver, although an anti-Parker man previous to the St. Louis convention is credited with having said some very serious things against Parker at that convention attempted to show the few Democrats present why they should vote for Parker. In his own word he said last night, "I was not for Parker at tlie St. Louis convention, I was for Hearst (great applause), but while at the convention and serving as a member of one of the

committees I came in contact with the greatest man in the world, William Jennings Bryan (applause) and after a number of talks ,with him I changed my mind." The general

I here started to tell his reasons for changing his mind, but he never fin

ished nor did he touch the subject again during the evening. Mr. Weaver attempted to pick to pieces a number of the declarations made by Senator Beveridge on Thursday night. Reese Maria tt introduced General Weaver to the audience. Mr. Weav

er paid a very pretty tribute to the

late Senator Hoar. The audience,

Arhich was about one-half small boys seemed to be restless and the general had to caution them a number of times to keep better order.

seems strange that the league leaders j

should seek recruits from one of the

tail enders of last season. Clarence

Jessup, manasrer-captain of the Richmond team was in the city yesterday

in consultation with Manager Sebern,

with trades up his sleeve with a view

of getting either Roberts of Lyons, or

jmssibly both. Mr. Sebern would not

talk about the outcome, but it is pret

ty generally believed by the fans that the line up of the Grays for the coming season is fixed and will be as follows: Iliirgins and Hart, rusher; Roberts having been traded for them; Devlin, center: Lyons, half; Starker, jroal, and Callahan, utility.
